So I've had this setup for about 2 years, one day woke up and started using my Internet browser and after about 2 minutes I was surprised by a black screen. After a few seconds my cursor comes back but the rest of the screen stays black. Naturally I hit the reset button. Computer gets stuck on b2, HDD light turns off, and it just sits there. After playing around with the RAM stick and clear CMOS button, and pulling my computer forward and opening my window, suddenly I get to the BIOS. Temps look fine so I change my CPU speed to where I had it and set voltage to manual 1.2 and try to start. Failure. I play around with it some more, eventually get to BIOS and leave without changing anything and windows boots fine. After about 30 seconds of Internet browsing it blackscreens again, but this time the whole display comes back after about 5 seconds and a notification pops up in the bottom right saying the display adaptor stopped responding and recovered. This happens 100 more times, gradually less frequently, eventually I underclock the graphics card and it happens only when I try to do something GPU intensive like run the EVGA OC Scanner benchmark test, and even that gets like 30 seconds in. I go to play csgo, blackscreens every minute ish and then after about 7 of those it works fine. I have a nice day of a perfectly working computer again and everything is happy. I go to bed at 1:20 am local time. I wake up at 8 am local time. I turn on my monitor and see POST screen and b2. Help.

OK so if you set the BIOs to default does the problem still occur?

I'm in windows now so I'd rather not risk trying, but if it happens again I'll try that.

RAM? Yes. PSU? No. I payed $400 dollars for this thing on release and got a ten year warranty. I'm not buying a replacement.

So just because you have two working units means everyone else has a good working unit?

Update: I have discovered today that the issues only occur when I have both my USB Wireless and my phone plugged into the computer, so it's definitely some sort of power issue. Does this point to a dead CMOS battery? I can buy a new one this week if it does.

Probably not. Most likely it is an issue with not being able to identify what is attached to the USB port causing the hang. If you don't ever boot from other devices, I believe there is an option to disable booting from removable devices/media in the BIOS.

Except I solved the booting issue by unplugging my phone, which never stopped it from booting in the past. I just started using the USB wireless about 36 hours before my problems started occurring though, so I have no doubt it was a catalyst. And it also doesn't explain the fact that my graphics driver kept having to restart once I got into windows the first day (and that has actually come back when I'm playing fullscreen games).

I should also note that in OC scanner at every point where the drivers restart, the GPU power % spikes to 150, spikes down to well below normal, and then increases back to 80%, which is what my power target is currently set to.

When you talk about your Phone are you talking about an RJ 11 Port on a Modem or USB to Modem Port?
Like this TRENDnet 56K USB 2.0 Phone, Internet and Fax Modem, TFM-561U
Then on the Wireless USB device, is the Bios trying to Boot from Network and or your Phone?

Re: Z77 FTW stops halfway through POST 2015/02/06 09:29:13 (permalink)
Swapped my power supply for a 700W CoolMax and my problems have disappeared. It's been two days, and the only issue I ran into was my mouse stopped working when I plugged my phone in to charge, but since my graphics driver hasn't stopped responding, the machine hasn't frozen completely, and I've restarted with no issues like 5 times, I'm going to assume that's a separate issue (and we all know P67/Z77 USB is super broken anyway). Thanks for your ideas guys, and sorry for my backlash at the PSU criticisms. I can be quite stubborn like that sometimes.

If you haven't done so it might be worthwhile to reinstall the chipset drivers. I don't know if the USB drivers are a separate install but if they are go ahead and install those.
