So i got bought the GTX 970 SC ACX 2.0 on black friday but didn't get to build it until the end of december. So when i built it and got ready to play some games i got this horrifying noise from my case. I found out that i had lost the GTX970 lottery and had RMA'd the card. When the replacement came back from Germany, i started a game and i still had coil whine! Keep in mind i already capped the fps to 60 in precisionx 16 both times. So i contacted evga's awesome support team and they told me to test the card in another system. so i went to his house and we tested the card in his system and it still had coil whine. the buzz was somewhat quieter but still audible.
1. EVGA want me to pay for shipping even though they gave me free shipping last time (this may sound selfish but as a high school student i don't have alot of money left to spend)
2. I returned my psu and got a refund and i am going to buy an XFX ProSeries Core editon 650W, but i don't know if that will help with the coil whine on the GPU... since my friends 80+ gold psu didn't help that much.

sooo.... at this moment i don't know what to do. Either RMA the card and make EVGA customer support angry at me for wasting their money on shipping and rma all the time. Or just live with it and regret not going for either a console or an AMD system?

I'll be on my second RMA (3rd card). Support said they will test it for whine before shipping it out. Maybe they can do the same for you? You are right about EVGA support being awesome, other vendors would probably just say "deal with it" after 1 RMA but EVGA is being very cool about it.

Before you send it back, attempt to "burn it in". Download Unigine Heaven and set it to the max possible settings you can. When you head to school set it on loop. Walk away. Come back tomorrow and just let it wear in the parts that scream. If nothing else, you will have tried.

Also, go ahead and set a higher than normal fan profile as well, just so it keeps the card cool while it is doing this.

I did this overinght on my current card and it made it worse if you can believe that. When I play games that work the card hard and it can't 60+fps with vsync off instead of a whine I get a rattle or a buzz that will change when I look at different surfaces in game :P

Last time i let it burn in the whine got worse. And i can't do anything at the moment because i don't have a psu. I'll get one next week.

They told me the same thing. "We test each card for full functionality before shipping it back" but it looks like they didn't test it enough. This card also runs worse, believe it or not. On the last card i ran FC4 smoothly (but with horrible coil whine). But on this card it ran the game very poorly with lots if stuttering and was very slow. Weird?

Try to get a new SSC or FTW+ as these cards have a new layout to prevent coil whine.
RMA should be able to help you with that ;)

Thank god you answered. They told me i could get a free ssc acx 2.0+ (3975) since i still had issues.
But 1. Where did you hear that they have a new layout that prevents coil whine?
2. Does that count as a step-up? Because if it counts as a step-up, you have to pay for shipping i think. And i can't afford that at the moment.

Call them… I got a free pic up for my 2nd RMA and am now getting in my 3rd RMA the FTW+.
As long as it is a RMA you will not step-up.

The new SSC and the FTW+ have
- 1x6-Pin and 1x8-Pin PCIe power connector
- 6+2 power phases instead of 4+2
That has been named as the big changes to reduce CW.

Re: Another GTX970 coil whine thread. 2015/02/11 09:08:08 (permalink)
I would be pissed!!!!! 2 RMA's and the 3rd had coil whine!!!! Holy bad luck!!! I've got one bad RMA, out of 3 cards, they don't test them unless your on your 2nd RMA or "Advanced RM". They always say their RMA parts are tested before packaging, but if that were honestly the case, no one would get a bad RMA card, now would they?? EVGA either has douchebag techs doing the testing, or they are just shipping half ass products blindly. Either way EVGA usually takes care of you in the end. I had one 670 GTX FTW go bad after 2.5 yrs, they RMA'ed both of my 670 FTWs, and sent me 2 brand new 770GTX 2GB SuperClocked ACX 's cards.  My issue was minor though, 1 of the 770's just didn't over-volt the +.12 so I RMA'ed it back, the advanced RMA went super fast, as long as your able to post up the collateral temporarily, they send the new one right away(after its pre tested), not waiting for the card to arrive or be checked in.

Yeah i was planing on doing advanced RMA to minimize my down time but unfortuntely i spent so much on this card and shipping for it and its replacement that i got nothing now ,which anws seems a bit stupid from them to require a temporary payment of that amount just for a faster shipping.
Even amazon send me a replacement straight away when i requested one, how can evga which are the manufacturers and the one liable for the defect cant do that? I chose evga cause i thought they had the best service in Europe but as far as i am seeing now its all just advertising....

I Setup my new eVGA 850W G2 Power Supply still have bad Coil Whine. I Sent a email to eVGA to RMA and have the new Card Tested or Swich for a Different GTX 970 Model & Tested.
I Like the Support and Quality From eVGA and i wont Give up. The 970 is a Problem Coil Card. I Should be able to get a GTX 970 with No Coil Whine. I Purchase the 10 Year Plan other thing i like about eVGA.

970 SC, I have a FT02 case and a reference cooler design is recommended. Unfortunately none of the step up options have that cooler. Going to see if support will make an exception and let me step up to a reference 980 even though it's not on the list.

Yeah Evga's Rma process needs work. The shipping time is too long, 2 days to check a gpu in after being received at shipping dock?? my normal rma took 7 days each way, the advanced rma was much better, I gave them my credit card for collateral, that way they test the new card and it ships right away, w/o waiting for the bad card to arrive at Brea,Ca.
Hopefully you get a good card back.
Best of luck.
