Should be interesting. I usually do not buy Seagate, but depending on these changes I may give them a try. My past experiences have been much better with WD HHDs and Samsung SSDs. They acquired a controller company a bit ago which is why they are developing their own. This may be the most significant change.

Well, that's nice and all but I wish they would stop concentrating on making bigger and bigger drives for a second and work toward MUCH better build/reliability ratings. Besides what most of the enthusiast community has experienced with Seagate drives since the Maxtor acquisition and the Barracuda headaches, the Backblaze data should have really opened their eyes to some of the issues they have. Its either a drive design/arrangement issue or a bad set of crucial components and it needs to be fixed. People do not mind paying a little bit more if they think they are buying into something that's reliable, especially in this area, and can give them the result they need. Right now, I don't know too many people that will buy a Seagate drive for market price, if at all, because of the shoddy reliability and that's the type of thing that can end a business like this, which WE really don't need.

As a tech, we order primarily WD Blue drives and their failure rates at our business for customers seem like they don't have the track record they claim.  We get the occasional DOA and ones that get bad sectors less than a year or less than three years.

On my computer, I've owned Seagate drives primarily and they've lasted years but I don't have the exposure to Seagate drives as I do with WD drives in the workplace.  As of last Christmas, I bought the Seagate 4TB drive and it too is performing very well.
