Topic, I'm aware the 980s would be faster, but would it be worth the extra $400 for the 980s..

Don't really think you'd need 980 SLI for 1080p @ 144hz.

With all that hype around 970 I wonder you even think about this card :)

I was positive about that before, but with the slightly slower memory when accessing above 3.5GB, I sort of have doubts, but then again. I only expect the cards to last maybe 2 years at the most before replacing them with the next x70 series or so, depending on price of course.

Slightly slower ? Check this videos, it is crazy opposing 980, especially the third one on that page. The problem is not the 3.5GB memory but how application access to both partitions. For now you will be OK in most games in 1080p but if new comes it can be problem, GTA5 and Witcher 3 are sandboxes so I guess it will require high amount of video memory. I'm sorry for those guys who bought SLI for hi resolution gaming. And of course there is this psychology aspect that you must live with this knowledge you have been cheated and you did not get what you thought you are getting. www(.)computerbase(.)de/2015-01/geforce-gtx-970-vram-speicher-benchmarks/3/

When consoles use more VRAM for the textures, I don't think an extra 512mb is going matter much

It will, because unfortunately most of pc games are ****ty console ports where developers waste vram because they can because limit is 8GB. So why they should optimize :)

1080p won't be a problem for 2 970's. Don't worry about that memory hit, no one has demonstrated much of a performance hit by having that last 512MB partitioned anyways. I just got 2 970FTW+ to run my 1080p @ 144Hz monitor, I'm even planning to play a few games on a 4k monitor I have and I'm really not expecting to have any issues.

I did :) I've tested COD:AW and on ULTRA with FXAA and the vram can be easily filled. After then I've experienced stutters from time to time. I also did not believe it until I've tried it myself ;) I'm actually testing AC:U and even the vram was 3.6GB I did not encountered any obvious lags, so this is good so far, we will see if I play longer :) Of course everything ultra with FXAA and SSAO. This game is ****ing demanding... But most of the time on 1080p we are fine, in worst case we can lower the texture and shadow quality to high. We don't must have everything on ultra right ? :) Still for that money and for 1080p it is a beast and your SLI will be fine. I've step-up from 760 and this is huge improvement. But still this not excuses nvidia they lied about specs and I'm very disappointed from this, because I really liked nvidia and when it came to buying a new card, this was an easy choice. Not anymore... But I bought it in exchange for 130 euros so it's not so bad, but if I'd buy it for actual 380 bucks I would be reeeeally upset...

j2345912 With all the drama circling the 970 right now, it's really a difficult situation. Being an owner of 2x 970's very few titles currently use much more then 2.5GB of VRAM@ 1080 with the exception of a few games(which I've personally dealt with). My 970's still are blazing fast, however of course part of me wishes I hadn't hopped on the 900 series band wagon so fast, and just waited for an 8GB variant. There is a lot in the works here, and nobody really knows what to expect. Assuming you are dead set with Nvidia, the GTX 970 is still a super good card, but the 980.........pretty tasty
Yes, I can confirm that it will be not so bad, at least if playing in 1080p. I've just played AC:U which is terrible optimized game while ago and nvram utilization never crossed 3.5GB and I did not encountered any remarkable stuttering issue. See my performance graph, monitored for 10 minutes in sequence 2. You can see I had mostly constant 60 fps with drops in cutscenes (these are really crazy) and very linear frametime with only few spikes during 10 minutes. I was a bit afraid because I saw that video with AC really sluggish, but for me it works fine. The only problem I had in COD:AW, where the memory filled above 3.5GB. But for the money it is still a great choice, until you don't play 4K :)

I don't plan on playing 4K with them, so it seems like a solid bet. I do plan on upgrading to 4K, but not until the video cards get better, right now the choices aren't good for 4K, especially with 4GB of VRAM on the 980. Think I'll go with the 970s and get the wife the Samsung Tab S she wanted, lol

That is what most everyone has done with the current available cards.

That's weird because I'm just the opposite running 2x 970 SCs @4k. COD:AW for me on ultra minus any AA runs above 50fps w/o a hiccup and never touches above 3.2GB though admittedly I haven't played AW an aweful lot. BF4 at 4k will do near 60 fps all day long (minus AA of course) and also barely reach above 3GB. Unity however is my biggest offender. It goes between 3.6 and 3.8gb and anything above 3.4 is stuttering worse than Elmer Fudd. FarCry 4 is right behind it but not as bad. Yes both are Ubisoft and both are console ports so the VRAM usage is going to be high. I would expect the FPS loss, even a great one at VRAM cap but the stuttering makes it nearly unplayable. The problem is this isn't a future proof build with the stuttering issue as it is. We are only a year into this console generation and with Microsoft pushing more cross platform games with Windows 10, it's a safe bet that more games are going to come with high VRAM usage.
