Hi all,

I have a very strange problem with my new rig. At seemingly random times, my system will completely lock up when a device is inserted into the front panel I/O ports. All it requires is for the device to barely touch the USB "sheath" before it happens. As I said earlier, it doesn't always happen only sometimes.

And by complete lockup I mean having to hit the reset button. When in this state, the "caps lock" light on the keyboard can't even be turned on.

I can post my specs if needed.

Thanks in advance!

Sounds like it may be a grounding issue.  Possibly some small solder flashing on the back of the board lightly making contact with the case?

I would also double check all connections from the front I/O panel to the board.  Make sure they're all seated properly.

Beyond that, it is a strange issue.

I have seen that before,- it was a grounding issue, poor wiring.  Trace any wires coming from it, check for metal touching or rubs, wear-throughs causing wire shorts.

I thought that might be it. All connections are seated properly. It doesn't appear that anything is touching the case. I have to take out the DVD drive in order to get the the header to be sure though. If I can't see anything, would a picture of the board be any help? I'll see if I can't open up the front cover tonight.

Thanks for the quick replies! I was expecting at least a week before an answer.

Okay, so I pulled my rig apart. No solder touching, all cables are seated properly. I took some pictures on the off chance they would help, but it's not letting me upload them because they are over 500KB. If they would help, I'll throw 'em into PSE and reduce them.

Did you happen to follow all the cables (wires) from the front panel I/O to the board to make sure their is nothing pinched or any bare spots possibly touching metal?

As far as pics go, you could reduce & post them.  I'm not sure it will help, but you never know.

I didn't see anything pinched or touching the case.

Grrrrr! I just plugged in my camera to reduce the pictures, and it just locked up! I even touched the case before plugging it in. This is really annoying as well as weird.

I can't find any pattern as to when it happens. The only thing I know for certain is that if it happens, it happens at the exact millisecond something is plugged in. At happens with the 3.5mm headphone jack too, not just the USB ports.

In a little bit after I reset the thing I'll plug my camera into the back USB ports and then reduce the pictures.

Hmmm, the only other thing I could suggest at this point is to remove all connectors from the board coming from the front I/O panel.  Then reseat them making sure they're correctly seated on the all pins.

I know I have mistakenly connected a USB plug on the header and left 2 pins open and didn't notice it until I had issue's.  Maybe a long shot, but might be worth looking at.

Yeah, this is a very odd issue...  Sure does sound like a grounding issue though.

Oh, I don't disagree. I'll try and reseat the cables as well as reduce those pictures for you.

You don't suppose it could be a faulty header, do you?

It's possible.  You might want to get a good look behind it to check for anything looking off.  Maybe there you'll see some type of grounding problem.  Maybe even some loose connections.  I don't know, but certainly worth looking at.

EDIT:  My 1st thought when I read this question was your main front I/O panel itself.  If you're talking about the USB header on the board, try a different one if available.  But that wouldn't explain your 3.5mm plug doing the same thing...??

Actually, the USB header and the 3.5mm are on the same board.

Okay, it isn't letting the combined size of all pictures get over 500KB, so I'll do one per post. Here is the first picture.

<sigh> So, what would you suggest? Asking Corsiar for a replacement front I/O panel?

If you are talking about the USB Ports, is your header plugged in backwards?
Also did you plug the USB Header into the FireWire Header?
Last could your cables be being Pinched somewhere between some medal?

The header can only be plugged in one way. Besides, if it were backwards, they wouldn't work at all. This happens only 35% of the time.

I guess at this point I would talk to them about a replacement panel if it were me.  It seems to be the most logical thing causing the issue from everything you've checked out so far.

Yeah, I guess. Its really discouraging to have your first custom rig not work properly! I wonder if it could be the CPU? USB lanes are controlled by the CPU, right? Gee, or it could be the motherboard.

But I guess I'll start with asking Corsair for a replacement.

Is this forum going to die if nobody posts anything within the two weeks while I wait for a replacement?

Not true on all headers, some have all pins open so you can put them in the wrong way.
The header for FireWire is the same a USB so you can also plug in a USB Header into a FireWare as you can plug in a FireWire into USB Header.

My USB3.0 header can't be reversed, because it is like IDE connectors in that it has a little "lip" on one side.

OK, so we now know that it is only the USB 3.0 that you are having issues with, correct?
Yes USB 3.0 Header is only one way.

No, as I said before, it happens when headphones are inserted into the 3.5mm jack as well.

The thing to keep in mind here is that it doesn't always happen.

I would:

- check for a BIOS update
- check for updated chipset drivers
- test with another front panel header

Intel i9-12900K
ASUS Prime Z690-A
Corsair 850W RM850x
Windows 11 Professional
Arctic Liquid Freezer II 360 A-RGB
Corsair Dominator 32GB DDR5 5200MHz
EVGA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti FTW3 ULTRA GAMING

I would:

- check for a BIOS update
- check for updated chipset drivers
- test with another front panel header

You know, I have not done a single BIOS or chip set update! There's probably a ton. I will do that.

As for another front header, I don't have another, so that makes this kind of difficult.
