Well, it came and so far so good. It came with a new paint job, no marks, looks good. I was surprised, the entire case is metal. I was expecting metal insides and plastic panels. But the tops, sides, all of it are metal. The filters are magnetic and just stick on as needed. Being all metal explains the weight of the package, just over 45 lbs. Side panels are swappable, one window and one vented. Easy to take apart and has lots of room in it. Could easily b e a WC case if wanted. They include the extra screws and hardware pieces needed to stack the units if you have more than one. I believe it could hold 1 or 2 units about it. I'm waiting for a new PSU, EVGA 1000P2, and the 970 SSC backplates I just ordered before I install the equipment, so hopefully in a week or so. It's study and I'm impressed. No plastic on the frame. Only the window. Access and removal of internal parts was easy. Multiple PSU locations, HDD cages, all can be moved around. 2 USB3 connectors for the front panel which can be placed on the left or right side of the case. The case can hold a lot of fans if you want for air or WC. Some opening pics. Last TT case I really like was Xaser VI from a while ago, all metal and took alot of abuse with no issues. Then they went plastic and LED lights everywhere. I like this case on first look. We'll see once I load it up how it works. You can see my CaseLabs Magnum TH-10A build here with a pic of the Xaser VI too. http://forums.evga.com/New-Build-Update-to-Case-Labs-TH10A-m2202563.aspx . So far it's not as far below the CaseLabs as I would have thought for the price. We'll see when I load it up.

    Behind the front cover

    HDD side

    Other side, default PSU side.

Bottom, removable legs (I want to put wheels on it). And removable opening for stacking cases. These are the only non magnetic filters, they clip in.

Awesome looks great a fairly modular.
I had done some reading of a review and they did not mention that the side panel and control panel are swappable that's awesome good news. TY
I'm curious about three things #1 the top panel and #2 front bezel any chance you could take pics of both interior views. #3 You say the non windowed panel vented is it filtered too? maybe a pic of it too plzzz.

What else are you planning on putting in it?

The filters are magnetic on the top and side, so the pics show with one filter on and one off. You get both filters. The side panel has a larger gap between the filters.Take a look at the manual on the TT website and you see all of the options for it. Also, one shocker, the bag of screws and parts include a MB speaker/buzzer. I was shocked, can't remember the last time a case did, usually they are in the MB boxes.

As for this machine, it is my office/back up gaming machine so it gets:
    PSU:EVGA 1000P2
GPU: 2X EVGA 970 SSC in SLI w/ back plates (backplates in  week, they are on the way, I've had no problems with mine so far)
    MB: Asus P9X79
    CPU: i7-4820K 10% overclock
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D14 (I think that's the model for this CPU type)
    Monitor: Asus PB287Q (4K@60Hz)
I upped the PSU from old 850 in case I decide to go with bigger/more GPUs in the future, or go to water cooling on this setup too. Check out the link I include in the fiirst message for my main gaming machine, I need to get it up on ModRigs. Hopefully the rest of the parts will all be here in a week and I can transfer the components to their new home. Guess I may have to buy some more fans too. I'll put in the PSU as soon as it arrives. So far I like the case, I'll see about the MB tray tomorrow, that's what I am really interested in.

    #1 Top panel

    #2 Front Bexel

    #3 Vented Side panel

Let me know if you have any other questions. The build quality is good so far, solid.

Ya I already checked your link the old Xaser was space age huh? The Days
Ahh Air Cooled?  nooooo! but there's always next build should last and very versatile.
I'm also looking at a very moddable chassis I can see casters, glass on both sides and or ventilation both sides and glass on top.

To be sure you said all metal but the bezel looks like plastic frame with metal mesh am I right?

Re: TT Core X-9 unpacking and review 2015/01/28 21:01:50 (permalink)
I dragged one of the filters on the bezel and found out the following. The front of the bezel is all metal. The side of the bezel are plastic, I knew the i/o panel was. The metal front clips in and is held by a plastic frame. The front may be just a mesh, I'm not sure if it's clipped in or screwed/bolted yet. I'll have to look closer. One difference between it and the CaseLabs (CL) series is I don't see any way to mount fans in the self that divides the top and bottom compartments. The pull out to remove to allow cables/tubing to pass through when the cases are stacked does not have a filter. So the very front of the bottom does not have a filter, but there is no fan there. It's not as flexible as the CL cases as expected, but for $300 less it's seems to be a very good deal so far. I'm still surprised how much of it is metal, about all of it. I like MB trays that slide out all in tact like CL (and yes, my old Xaser VI). The tray on this is just the bottom part the MB is attached too. So, you have to set it in to the middle part and deal with the case being in the way. Taking of the top etc will help, but it does not slide out as one unit. A compromise by TT.

When I got that Xaser VI I couldn't believe I spent that much on a case. Most expensive case I had ever bought at the time. I got it when it first came out, and it took me from 8800s on air, then water-cooled(WC) and many MB/GPU WC combo until the 480s came before the CaseLabs Magnum came and blew it away. I want to compare the thickness of the TT metal to the CL aluminum. I'll try this weekend for that. The magnum case should last me along time. I can see this one too for the role I plan for it. I'm looking at the manual and fan configurations to see about airflow. Many of the fan slots don't have specific holes, but a long space to attach screws to for the length needed. So, instead of 120 and 140 screw holes you just get one long hole covering both. I noticed this in two places so far. Holds fans, but different. I still like it so far.

I sent an email to TT a few days ago about being able to buy another side panel, haven't heard back. A window on the top would be perfect for me right now. Again, all options CL offers to begin with (yes with a price). Hopefully TT will respond. TT doesn't have the window/vented combinations like CL either. Again, it all comes down to money.

I upgraded my pump for the CL case and keep looking at this in a WC light since I have the extra. But, the cost, one WC PC is enough. But, I think it would work nicely though, stacking would have a ton of options if you needed the extra room.

I used to have a mobo tray with my CM Stacker STC 01 but I maybe used it once it's nice to have but not needed. Actually it is my test bench now and the the add on blower I bought still works and is perfect for the task.  My first TT was the Soprano Silver, It's still in house too handed it down to my wife and she loved that case I must admit it was gorgeous and all aluminum.

I agree watercooling isn't cheap says the guy who has three watercooled systems in hose, but TT has me wondering what the price point will be on there new radiator line and pumps. Of course performance will be important but how bad can they be on a 10% overclocked machine.

If I watercooled, 10% overclock would just be the beginning. I'd overclock it more on air, but this machine can't be pushed as hard as it needs to be more stable due to it's use. I never really looked at TT for watercooling parts much, reviews didn't have there stuff as all that great when I was starting out with WC. Also, they didn't have a lot of options for components. But, I guess they have more stuff now.

I forgot I had a Soprano RS. Plastic front etc, it was on sale at a local computer store just wanting to dump it. Small, but what I needed for a small footprint project. Now, to find wheels for the X9.

Some good news, I unscrewed the feet to see about adding wheels, and they have standard 1" wide holes for wheels. So, I will add some CaseLabs casters to it. I am just starting the build, but so far the case is still nice. Well thought out, screws and clip ins for everything. Removed the HDD cases as I won't need them, easy to do. The MB tray was two screws and slips out. So far so, good pics tomorrow hopefully.

I'm going to use the CaseLabs HD wheels. They will work since it's a standard size, and work fine on my Magnum case. Once these things get heavy, especially with water cooling, wheels are a savior to me. I'd like to see them stacked when you get it done. I hope to transplant my rig by tomorrow. I replaced the rear fan with NoiseBlocker Silent pros 140's, and I think I'll keep the front one for now and see how loud it is for a bit.

At $17.95 it's a solid value too based on my experience.

Where else would I get them from! FrozenCPU had them cheaper after shipping, so I got them from there. Transplant complete, just have to see which extra fans I want to put on. It was pretty easy, the horizontal design has some advantages. Only one area I didn't like, they didn't leave a lot of room for hands. But, not a big deal. One minus I didn't think of, the top is vented and you can't see through it, that makes my EVGA SLI Pro light up bridge......not so see-able. The case has been sturdy throughout, I'll post some pics tonight.

All done, looks fine. Some people on NewEgg thought the case was missing brackets, turns out the diagram in the manual just shows all spot combinations, not all brackets included. I am on an email list from ThermalTake that will notify me when all of the extra brackets, side windows and parts become available. On to the pics.

Back panel, I put 2 140mm in the back, EVGA 1000P2 is already installed.

Plenty of room for other stuff and WC parts. The brackets at the other side (2) are the only ones you get for the sides and bottom. TT said you can buy more soon. I removed all of the HDD (2) cages.

The underside of the MB tray. It has a spot to mount a HDD.

    SDD installed, only drive.

Moved I/O panel to the other side.

    Continuing on.
Time for the 970 SSC back plates. They didn't cool the temp one degree.

So, I put 2 140mm fans above them and cooled the temp 2-4 degrees. So, the fans stop at idle.

ODDs are in and the front fan is working and quiet.

To finish up. I like it! I think I will get another window, we'll see what they cost.

    Before (TT Piano RS)

    After

Still hade some wire clean up to do, but everything was in.

    Done

Not a hard build, did the whole transplant in under 2 hours. Case is big has lots of room. Solid build and a good case that should last a long time, even going to WC.

Great I don't have to post any images!

OK, This is the Number One Case in my Book.
Man this case is the Bomb, at least for Water Cooling in my crazy way.
Even the front 3 5.25 bay in the front can be removed.

I forgot to mention the front 5.25 bays can be removed, you can put fans over them, the holes are already marked. I like it, not to loud, and solid. TT did a good job on this one. Any fans on the bottom sides won't get much air though, it seems odd to have radiators and fans there but no vents or holes to move air out of to me.Glad you like yours too.

Overall, I think this is a good compromise on a CaseLabs case. You don't get all of the flexibility, but for $300-400 less what you miss isn't that much. If you stack the TT X9, you can still be $100 less than one CaseLabs case and have more options. I wouldn't give up my Magnum double wide for it, but between this or the SMA horizontal cases, I'm quite happy with the TT, it is well built and TT even includes filters. Only thing I really wish it had was a full slide MB tray from the back, but for the comprises what they have is fine.

Ahhhh.....A word of warning/FYI I guess. I got my HD casters from Caselabs for the X9. Holes lined up perfectly. Then I tried the CL screws, way to big. Turns out the screws used on the underside of the case are the internal MB size attachment screws. I had some lying around and put them in, so the X9 is rolling now. But, given the tight fit of the case I guess the smaller screws have to be used. The bigger screws certainly wouldn't work on the wheel to go under the PSU. But, now they are on.

Well, until the Noctura (sp?) CPU cooler, and the 970s, and the USB3.0 PCI plug in's, covered it, a Asus P5N-D with a 4820 with a mild OC. The CPU cooler goes in last, it blocks a lot! Glad I didn't have to take it off for the transfer. It looks better than that now after some clean up. I hope TT does some vented clear tops, it would be nice. Do you think you'll get any good airflow to the fans in the bottom of the case that face the sides?

Extra side windows should be on sale soon, the page is up for the windowed side on the TT store, https://store.thermaltakeusa.com/inside03.php?s=44&k=204&a=1990  I signed up for the auto-notification. $27 bucks.

I never got a notification the windows were in. Where did you get one from, the TT store?

Yes sir.  Direct from your link above.  I see now it's back to auto notify though.

It shows in my account as an order but they haven't charged yet...ordered it late last night.

I thought the extra side panel window I bought was an error because it took them so long to ship it but it arrived today direct from the TT Store.  Looks fantastic with a window on each side.

I love the case and all it's features BUT, and I know this is kinda dumb, but I have all this nice equipment and all I can see from my chair is one 980 Kingpin and I think that bothers me. I may change cases...I didn't realize how much I like seeing my components.  lol

Hopefully they'll make a clear top. Still no buy option on the side window, you really lucked out.

If the side panels were vented that would be nice to have a windowed top but me thinks they need to rethink the case or come up with a bunch of different side and top panels

yes. Vented clear sides and clear top would be nice. It shouldn't be too expensive to offer I hope. I may call them again on the sides. Can't believe they still don't have any.
