I just missed my step up window by 2 weeks which sucks but my wife just got me a new LG 4k tv yesterday . If I would've known she was doing that I would've stepped up to a 980 on jan 17th. Is it possible to get 4k with my card or is it only the new cards that can get 4k?

Right now, there is no way to connect a GTX 780 and get full range 4:4:4 4K at 60hz as the GTX 780 does not support HDMI 2.0 spec. However, you should be able to run 4K at 30hz. If your LG has a HDMI 2.0 capable input, there might be a Displayport to HDMI 2.0 dongle coming out in the next few months which would allow full 4K at 60hz.

Check on the cable and make sure it is the HDMI cat 2 which supports 18Gpbs which meets the HDMI 2.0 spec. There are not HDMI cables that are officially labled as HDMI 2.0. You have to pay attention to the rated data transfer speed.

Vizio makes 18Gbps cables. Like I said, there are not 'official' HDMI 2.0 cables. You can get the 18Gpbs HDMI at Walmart. http://www.walmart.com/ip...-HDMI-Cable-8/36407302

(edit added by Cool GTX for clarity) I am agreeing that Catigory 2 HDMI cable is the correct terminalogy. The source below is listed for educational purposes to show that it is not an opinion; but, a fact as given by the definitions of the organization that "owns" the HDMI label. Definitions provided by HDMI.org- Category2 HDMI CableSee High Speed HDMI Cable
- High Speed HDMI Cable High Speed HDMI cables are tested to a more rigorous performance standard, aimed at meeting the needs of high-end home theater systems. It is performance tested to 340 MHz, and can reliably transmit a 1080p signal (and more) up to 7.5 meters. High Speed HDMI Cables are referred to as Category 2 cables in the HDMI specification. (See also: Standard HDMI Cable).
- High Speed HDMI Cable with Ethernet A High Speed HDMI Cable that also supports HDMI Ethernet Channel functionality, providing a channel for a 100 MB/sec Ethernet link between connected devices.HDMIHigh Definition Multimedia Interface. A 19-pin digital connection that transmits both high-definition uncompressed video and multi-channel audio through a single cable.

A 19-pin digital connection that transmits both high-definition uncompressed video and multi-channel audio through a single cable.
HDMI 2.0, which is backwards compatible with earlier versions of the HDMI specifications, significantly increases bandwidth up to 18Gbps and adds key enhancements to support continuing market requirements for enhancing the consumer video and audio experience. New functionality includes: - 4K@50/60, (2160p), which is 4 times the clarity of 1080p/60 video resolution
- Up to 32 audio channels for a multi-dimensional immersive audio experience
- Up to 1536kHz audio sample frequency for the highest audio fidelity
- Simultaneous delivery of dual video streams to multiple users on the same screen
- Simultaneous delivery of multi-stream audio to multiple users (up to 4)
- Support for the wide angle theatrical 21:9 video aspect ratio
- Dynamic synchronization of video and audio streams
- CEC extensions provides expanded command and control of consumer electronics devices through a single control point
HDMI 2.0 does not define new cables or new connectors. Current High Speed cables (Category 2 cables) are capable of carrying the increased bandwidth. So, get the HDMI cables labeled as CAT 2 and supporting 18Gbps. Vizio for example makes these and you can buy them at Walmart: http://www.walmart.com/ip...-HDMI-Cable-8/36407302 Edit corrected spelling for Vizio and added link.

HDMI versions, such as 1.4 and 2.0 denote the type of ports used on devices like Tv's and video cards. That's why you won't find cables labeled with 1.4 or 2.0. Cables are labeled as either "Standard HDMI" or "High Speed HDMI". As noted above, just look for cables labeled High Speed. No need to spend too much on them, unless you plan on running them to very long lengths. http://www.digitaltrends....er/hdmi-2-0-explained/

Personally I would not consider using 4K unless you're using an SLI of two GTX 970s or GTX 980s.

So no 4k 60Hz on GTX 780's ???!!!! Arghhh !!! That's unbelievable....! Is it due to the port (no hdmi 2.0) or hardware limitation ? ie. Display port to hdmi 2.0 adapter could work ? Thanks !

Using a GTX 780 on a 4K screen you could probably play movies but I wouldn't try any advanced gaming personally. Right now I am using a 4K monitor. When my 4K monitor was just received I couldn't find my displayport cables and used HDMI temporarily. Trying to play games at 30 hertz is terrible.

You would definitely need a second GTX 780 to play games @ 4K. Not even a single GTX 980 is good enough for 4K @ 60Hz.

As you can see a single GTX 780 would not offer more than about 28 frams - not playable for games; a movie maybe - I do not know.http://www.anandtech.com/show/8191/nvidia-kepler-cards-get-hdmi-4k60hz-support-kind-of SLI a pair of GTX 780 still iffy (IMO); just not enough GPU if you want 60 frames for gaming at 4k 2160p @ 60Hz Now if you are talking SLI a pair of 780Ti; you would have the power. However DisplayPort 1.2 (17.28 Gbit/sec) can handle the data load, just get a good cable rated at 14 Gbit/sec or more. To display a 4k resolution at 60Hz, the video interface (HDMI, DisplayPort) needs to transfer 12Gbits/second of data:– bit_per_channel = 8 – number_channels = 3 (RGB) (red,green,blue) – resolution = 3840 * 2160 – 60Hz = 60 times per second – bandwidth = 3840 * 2160 * 8 * 3 * 60 – bandwidth 4k@60Hz = 11.94 Gbits/sec – bandwidth 4k@30Hz = 5.97 Gbits/sec

The 780 can do 4k @ 60hz through displayport but if the other device doesn't have displayport then you're stuck with 4k @ 30hz through hdmi

True, if the HDMI port does not support 60 Hz, your stuck with 30Hz on some monitors/ TVs

6GB of VRAM will help but I have two GTX 970s in SLI and there are several games that don't run well with all the eye candy turned on because of the 4GB of VRAM on each card.
