I just watched this and I think he has some fantastic points. The best point he said is that gaming truly is an EXPENSIVE hobby that I love. This is a really really hard one for me to figure what side of the fence I am on this. I think no and yes. Like mentioned in the video free games allow those who cant afford games to get in the action. But at the same time for you to get all the good stuff and "win" you have to pay later on. But as he mentions in the video this is too not always the case. For example I like to play the free to play game on my Nexus 6 called Dead Trigger 2. Its a fantastic game and I have not spent a single penny on it ever since and I am having a blast with it. I think how free games allow the game creators to get their revenue is by the adds they place on those free to play games. So in other words either way they get the money.  IMHO I think games now days are toooo expensive. $60 for a video game is a lot. I personally think games should be a tad bit cheaper brand new with a price of around $30-$45 tops. With that said I would feel much better about my purchase if I buy brand new around those prices. I mean if you think about it game developers dont spend as much as you would think in making the game. The majority of the money spent with games now days is in marketing. I am sure many of you could bring examples of that. BUT one game that I can think of that cost a lot to make as well as cost a lot to market is the game Destiny.  But yeah what do you guys think of this? Do you guys agree with him in the video? Also do you agree with what I said about games being to expensive now days?

Did this guy actually utter the words "game income equality problem"? What a socialist retard.

I would much rather pay to play then see of bunch of blinking ads.  I have no problem if the game-maker puts out a free version (w/ ads) or a paid version (w/out ads).  I'm sooooo sick of ads on everything I could scream.  You have to watch a 30 second commercial just to watch most videos on the internet these days.  It's annoying. I understand why they do this, but it's super duper out of control!

Use AdBlock to get rid of annoying ads on youtube videos. You can use AdBlock to block images you don't like on forums or webpages too.

Given that I'm not anywhere close to liberal leaning, I'm thinking you're reading too much into that... but were getting too far off track at this point IMO.

I think some points raised are valid, but he doesn't account for the loss of profits, the rise of digital releases vs physical copies and the trend that will occur if it was regulated that game development and design times and efforts would decrease due to the lack of profit which would be driven by publishers.

He did suggest how much extra it would cost due to micro-transactions, but doesn't that void his entire argument?
I would say yes to bringing back the shareware model, but these days the shareware version could be improved to market a product which isn't as good.
Games shouldn't cost more than $60 when buying a digital licence. All of that extra money goes to marketing and (naturally) to the publishers - which don't actually deal with the technical aspects of the product.

    Such is life.

I like to pay for a game, full price, and it be complete. This DLC nonsense and "f2p" microtransaction required to get anywhere within a decent frame of time crap needs to stop. I hardly buy any games anymore because of this. I definitely don't purchase day one anymore! The last few games I've bought I've just been completely disappointed in, and any that I think I'll be excited about, end up getting the f2p tag and being filled with microtransaction crap ORRRRRR, they release at full price and still have microtransactions that affect gameplay immensely.

Also, Destiny is one of those games I'm talking about being disappointed in. It was so short it was stupid. I find it hard to believe that a game that offers as little as Destiny does in both content and gear drops/customization (practically none) would have cost so much to make. If that game was 400M to make, I'd bet 300M of that was easily marketing.

Last game I've loved to death? Dragon Age Inquisition. Tons to do, nice systems in place, and although a little buggy in places, a fantastic experience overall.

Maybe I'm just beginning to grow out of video games though... I don't know.

Hmm what do you guys think about just paying for games as is but having the DLC for free? Most the DLC I bought for some games was a waste. Especially the $20 packs for 2 more hours of gameplay.

Short answer NO. If developers did decide to make most or all games free to play there would have to be some drastic changes made to the current paradigm. I think there should always be an option to purchase the game for regular price because a lot of free to play games nickel and dime you to death just to get the content and the final price is usually way more than the price of a regular game. Income inequality? Sure but there are Steam sales so that you can pick up multiple titles for the price of one.

If everything went free what incentives would there be to develop better games and innovate?

HA funny that you said that. I just recently watched another one of his videos. So what do you think about his video if Steam Sales and bundles bad for gaming? I like how explains that these sales cause people to make impulsive buys. Its really fascinating with the science in marketing. For example people choose less variety when buying in bulk.

Exactly!  I actually hate the term "free". It does not exist.  There is no such thing as free. EVERYTHING has a cost. The sooner folks figure that out, the better off we will all be.

Well of course nothing is free. If you really want to nit pick at it like you are, it cost energy and time to do everything. But dont try to make it more complicated alright. I am sure most folks are not that dumb to know that things are not free.  Its just a general broad term we are using as "free".

I dont see how it's a bad thing at all. A good deal means people are more likely to give something new a try. It's pretty rare that I ever buy any bundles unless I know it's a series I like or from a favorite developer. I would argue that because of Steam sales i'm more likely to pick up a developer's next time sooner either at launch or the first sale. The Witcher 3 is a good example, picked up the first 2 games on sale so i'm going to buy the third one when it comes out.

I don't mind paying $60 for a game... I purchase maybe 3-4 games a year at full price, tops. What I am coming to HATE is day 1 DLC purchases whether released yet or not... why the hell should I pay $80 for a game to include content you could have included in the first place? Expansion packs at $15-$20 back in the day were worth it and decent... a lot of extra content, practically a new game! Nowadays it's JUNK.

I can't stand DLC for the most part, which usually ends up being some poorly put together mini-mission or pointless maps, weapons, outfits, etc.  I don't understand the season pass concept either.  Paying $20 for about $25 worth of DLC that isn't going to be released for a few months, and you have no clue whether you are going to like it or not.

I'm not saying all DLC is bad because I think it works out well for games like Skyrim or Fallout, where it acts as a continuation of your current game.

Uhhhh....  Actually it's not...  It's free to the charity, but not to you. There is still a cost, you are just absorbing it by not charging said charity for your time and labor.

Pricing models for games should be whatever the publisher/developer determines should be the pricing model. There are plenty of games using F2P models and plenty that use the traditional model. The best games to look at successful and unsuccessful payment models are MMO's. Plenty of examples there that show when these work and when they don't work.

Bottom line is that the market should inform developers and publishers the best payment model for games.

I think games should start at $100.00, this would easily weed out people who shouldn't be playing in the first place.

Think about it, if Halo was $100.00 before map packs there wouldn't be as many 12 year old kids dropping the N word and "acting all crazy".

O heck no!! Your crazy! If games hit that high I am done with gaming. Plus higher prices wont rid out those 12 year old kids. I am sure they will find ways to get the game regardless like from their rich parents or saving their allowances.

The problem is that most of those "12 year olds" are adults who start acting like they're 12 years old when they start playing games....

Free to play is just a way for publishers to make $$$. People tend to spend more when you nickel and dime them. Plus you always end up having to watch stupid advertisements. I'd rather pay $100 bucks for the whole game than all this stupid new skin DLC $$$$$$$$. Or even a monthly subscription is a better alternative.

Free to play has ruined gaming.
