I don't know that there is a firm public release date yet for Win10. After watching the live tech preview today, my guess would be not before June.

That's interesting. I just watched Terry Myerson again from the live preview from earlier today. He did not make any distinction like that. At about the 14 min mark, he says Win10 will be a free upgrade for 1 year from release date to all devices running Win8.1, and all devices running Windows Phone 8.1, and everyone running Win7. Hopefully users will get their own key and a clean .iso. I'd rather have a root canal than install 10 through Windows Update like 8.1 from 8. And believe me, I've done both simultaneously.

I don't believe there will be any delay in getting the upgrade from Win 7 & 8. I think they will get it at the same time after reading the more recent reports. That's my take on it anyway.

Windows Seven is officially in extended support mode, in 2020 it will be dead just like XP.
Windows ten will offer something we will all need...DX12 and a start button. We will all make the move and most of us will like it.
Judging by the preview it looks promising. Their move to free(upgrade) is smart, it will get most of the users on one OS.
The re-branding of IE is also smart. I use Bing on my phone, PC, and laptop, I'm interested in seeing what they done with IE to make it more like Chrome.
The Xbox to PC and PC to Xbox concept looks cool too, even if it doesn't get off the ground its a good step in the right direction, maybe something awesome could become of it.
I think its a safe call that this is the OS we will all be excited for.

There's always a possibility of making windows 10 subscription based. Maybe the upgrade for 7/8 users for the first year are free but what if everyone else who needs a new copy is subscription based?
Maybe they'll wait until windows 11 to do that. I don't like how they called windows a service during the video when they were showing off windows 10.

This is supposed to be the last major release for Windows. From here on out there will only be updates. There will not be an "11". This is not Spinal Tap :P Of course you will be able to purchase a license for a new build, upgrading after the year is up you will have to purchase and a license will come with a new pc.

So after the first year what's the price?
From the article it sounds like it's "during" the first year. So unless you wait to upgrade till after that there should be no cost. A fresh upgrade/purchase after the 1st year? Haven't heard any numbers on that yet, but probably in the $100 range. Unless they bundle it for free with an Office 365 subscription, which I get a feeling might be a scenario.

One big question will be if manufacturers of MB's and GPU's will provide updated drivers and firmware for many of the Windows 7 and some of the Windows 8 machines. Asus particularly sometimes abandons older boards in terms of new drivers.

I agree, I doubt every manufacturer will be releasing newer drivers for the OS. Good thing is, 10 should have lots of drivers included, and windows update should have some as well. The rest can probably be found from the manufacturer's site such as nvidia/amd cards, intel chipset, realtek audio, etc.

10 should work with Vista/7/8/8.1 drivers, it's still NT 6.x kernal.
