EVGA G2 Supernova 1300 Watt vs EVGA P2 1200 Watt (Vs Seasonic P-1200)

Hello, I was looking for some insight after looking into upgrading my power supply and I wanted to know just how comparable these two models are because the G2 Supernova is on sale at Newegg for the same price as a Seasonic Platinum 1200 watt. However, based on reviews and testing it sounds like the EVGA P2 outperforms the Seasonic, but the EVGA Platinum line is out of my upgrade budget. Other than things like Platinum vs Gold (obviously), fanless/hybrid vs semi-fanless, and overall efficiency/ripple resistance/ect., does the G2 have ALL Japanese capacitors now, is the soldering and construction about the same, and lastly, how is the semi-fanless noise for regular use (is it worth worrying over "fanless" vs "Semi-fanless?")? Otherwise, reviews at least seem to paint even the G2 as the closest thing to Platinum out there and a stellar product, but those little details were just hard to pin down because early reviews obviously don't account for changes made later like the possibility of the capacitors on the G2 possibly being 100% Japanese or not. It also sounds like from a noise perspective it goes P2 > Seasonic, but where does the G2's semi fanless mode place it roughly? Overall I'm digging everything else about the G2 from what I've researched, but further clarification would just help ease my mind.

Any help would be greatly appreciated so thank you for your time EVGA community!

I have a 1300G2 on my system, and I have had no complaints with it, makes very little noise, at least not enough that other fans don't drown it out.  When testing my cards on air, the ACX 770 Classy's when under full load made more noise than my 1300.  I have ran the PSU right to the ragged edge of its stated limits and it did it no problem during benching.
In a perfect world I would like a Titanium rated ECO PSU, but, I have no complaints with the 1300, it is a solid performer, and usually case fans/card fans are louder than the PSU.

Thank you for the fast response! I figured as much about the the PSU fans vs case fans, but some reviewers can make a mountain out of a molehill when it comes to noise so I just wanted some more thoughts. After reading about the economy mode, though, it sounds like the fans don't necessarily kick on with the G2 unless it reaches a certain temperature, or am I mixing things up? A lot of customer reviews of G2 units mention the ECO mode, so I would assume that's what they were talking about.

Also, is it safe to say that the G2s now have 100% Japanese capacitors based on this thread here:  compared to the early reviews from Johnnyguru and the like? Otherwise, I'm really getting amped (no pun intended) about the Supernova G2 1300w; it might not be "Platinum," but dollar for dollar I'll take an extra 3 years of warranty over Seasonic, EVGA support/community, and an extra 100 watts of headroom if everything checks out.

It looks like as it is the P2 1200 thwomps the competition quite nicely going by this roundup -->
They also mention that at least the P2 is quieter than the Seasonic, so that's encouraging to read as well. I found it a bit disconcerting that I could not for the life of me find enough user reviews on the Seasonic p-1200, but the Supernova G2 by consensus reads a lot more clearly towards the positives without question.

Oh! Just remembered: Would the pins on the G2 1300 support my motherboard? I figure they should, but I don't want to punch the buy button and wind up having to hit it again for a new MOBO last minute heh heh!

**Side question unrelated to the others, but does anyone know if the American Express $25 off $200 Newegg promo through twitter appears on the statement itself because nothing comes off the bill when I put the card in for payment, even though I got the twitter confirmation from AMEX.

1300G2 will support every motherboard. ASUS P9X79 LE is not difference than others.
And 1200 P2 for me is nicer option if someone build SLI under water example and want quiet RIG he can Enable Eco Mode and disable fan. Because 1200 and 1300 is very small difference in power. But for GTX980 SLI is enough and 1000 P2.
Only if someone change fast graphic cards and maybe next generation need more power and want to give space and for silent and for overclocking than 1200 P2 is good. I thought first to go on 1000 P2, 1300 G2 or even 1600 G2.
Than 1200 P2 was somehow best ratio power, silence, performance and review scores and I decide that's best option for me.

I see I'm pretty much in minority with mine 1200 P2.
Probably because he is launched later.
Anyway whole SuperNOVA series is nice and we really no reason to think who will need less power AMD or NVIDIA.
There are models for every combination of graphic cards and processors.

I liked full black more. That's one of reason why I choose Platinum.
You know for full black fit with everything. Even if you build black > silver only.
Even with black/red, anything. OK sleeve cables will be full black anyway but better and connectors black.
Platinum unit somehow fit best with Titan Black series, this new EVGA GTX980 with turbine. Probably and new NVIDIA reference.
Or GTX780Ti Classified... because everything is black.
Anyway I knew you and few people will upgrade soon on 1600 Titanium...

So if I may ask, would it be worth losing the extra 2-300 Watts, spending an extra $30, and getting the P2 instead of the G2? With my current listed specs, what kind of other upgrades can I look towards with that type of wattage, e.g. SLI cards (two, sure, but is three an option with newer cards?), LEDs, and last having the computer on long periods of time and/or 24/7?

sigurkirs, even if you plan a second card 1200-1300W is way too much overkill.
my advise to you is, in case you sensider SLI, buy 850W G2 or 1000 P2 but not more.
the new generation graphics cards tend to use even less energy so you should be more than future proved.

I'll never understand why people tend to buy higher wattage PSU's than they need.
most buyer never really take into account what they actually need, pity.
so you are not alone Vlada011, I'm even more alone than you.
if EVGA had a 650W G2 or even 550W G2 I would buy it without thinking.

best example, you can run a high end GTX 780Ti rig with a 450W gold PSU perfectly fine.
I've never seen a single guy really doing it. why!?

here the proof from Tom Logan himself:

You can't go with 650W just like that...
750W is I think minimum if you want space and hardware to last longer.
Operational temps are lower, more space for suddenly unplanned upgrades on nice and more power hungry hardware and better processors. 750-850W is minimum that's my opinion. I even think Hadron need 600W PSU, it's very hard to find PSU compatible for Hadron capable to work with Titan Z or R9-295X.

of course you can Vlada011, just watch Tom Logan's video I posted and decide yourself.

look at this test result and tell me why do I need more than 650W for a GTX 980 SLI!?

Yes and what will happen if you find GTX990 for chip price and cross on Intel 5820K OC on 4.0-4.5GHz...
What to do than with 650W, or everything from beginning. Or GTX980 price drop on 350e after GM200 show up...
and you want fast to cover SLI.

Thank you for the information, as that was a big concern of mine as well which is why I am now thinking over the Supernova P2-1000. Other than the all-black cables (which I like myself, ha ha!), what other main advantages and features do the P2 have over the G2?

the difference is the efficiency, Platinum is about %3-4 more efficient than Gold.
1000 P2 is unfortunately the only option at EVGA if you want Platinum and not too much over kill.
I wish they would have also 850W, 750W and even 650W P2 models - would be great.

How does the fanless operation differ with the platinum lines, or is it identical? Likewise, it sounds like overall the EVGA line of power supplies have a good fan curve, whereas what gave me qualms about that Seasonic is just the absurd jump not only users commented on hearing, but even various tests (including the defined curve by Seasonic themselves) that sounds like it could be rather erratic.

I like the sound of getting a premo-PSU, especially because I'm waiting to see what Nvidia comes out with down the line other than the skimpy 960, while leaving open the option of SLI 970s or 980s.

I assume it's identical, been using my 750W G2 for over a week now and haven't heard the fan at all.
it's not surprising though if the fan doesn't spin under 370-380W so maybe my fan never spins.

    Re: EVGA G2 Supernova 1300w vs EVGA P2 1200w (vs Seasonic P-1200) 2014/12/24 01:25:42 (permalink)
Sounds good to me, but what confused me was the graphs at the bottom:
    G2 1300 watt:  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817438011
    P2 1000 watt: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817438013&SortField=0&SummaryType=0&PageSize=10&SelectedRating=-1&VideoOnlyMark=False&IsFeedbackTab=true#scrollFullInfo

At least going by those charts at the bottom, the Platinum line has a complete no-fan mode vs. a slow/reduced noise fan, but maybe that speaks to just how quiet they are to begin with if you're not hearing it or am I misunderstanding the ECO mode function? According to the P2-1000's page: "ECO Intelligent Thermal Control Fan system (Zero Fan Noise < 45°C)" compared to "Quiet and Intelligent Auto Fan for near-silent operation" On the G2-1600's page.

Also, can anyone confirm the *true* 100% capacitor inquiry regarding the Gold line vs the Platinum?

P.S. Am I being overly-suspicious, but the cynic in me is calling and asking why is the Seasonic Platinum 1000 price higher ($194.99 after $15.00 rebate) than the 1200 model ($139.99 after $30.00 rebate) by that much?
Not to mention that the Seasonic 1200 has only 7 reviews (not too convincing, either...) and last I checked there were only like 6 on Amazon!

according to the 2 graphs the 1300W G2 has a more aggressive fan curve from %40 load on.
but on the other hand as it's wattage is higher it's more difficult to get there.

the graphs don't show the "eco mode on" but the "eco mode off", meaning the fan spins all the time.
that's why you have a noise level of 26dBA even at 0 load.
for the "eco mode on" the graph should be like that, zero noise until %40 load:

Ah, thank you, that is what I thought but I figured I might as well ask to be positive. Going off of EVGA's own site, I think the Eco mode is what was confusing me a tad:
EVGA SuperNOVA 1200 P2 Power Supply
    Part Number: 220-P2-1200-X1
    • Total Watts: 1200 Watts
    • +12v Rail: 99.9A Total

    • Energy Rating: 80 Plus Platinum
    • Fans: 1 x 140mm
    • ECO Mode: Yes

    Warranty: 10 Years

EVGA SuperNOVA 1300 G2 Power Supply
    Part Number: 120-G2-1300-XR
    • Total Watts: 1300 Watts
    • +12v Rail: 108.3A Total
    • 100% Modular
    • Energy Rating: 80 Plus Gold
    • Fans: 1 x 140mm
    • ECO Mode: No

    Warranty: 10 Years

Apparently the G2 1000 and 1300 don't feature the ECO mode; even looking at the back reveals this, so I'm starting to lean more towards that lovely P2-1000. I would imagine that because it also has a lower power rating for realistic application, even SLI, that it will run more efficiently than the 1300 watt on top of just being generally more efficient overall, yes?
No matter what, props to EVGA because after all the reviews between sites, customers, and videos they've been getting accolades on these bad boys and the price is just phenomenal.

    SuperNOVA 1000 P2 is same quality as 1200 P2 only 200W less.
That's enough and for SLI and for Intel Extreme Processors.
Jacob have I think 1000 P2 with GTX980 SLI or something like that.
    Nice number 1KW PSU.

    While I like the 1600 T2 I would never update to a lager than the 1300G2 for for this reason;
UPS Units are hard to find to handle a large PSU and the cost is to high for a 2000 Watt UPS Unit. Plus the weight.
So I now go with Two PSU 1300G2 and Two UPS 1500 Units per computer.
I put the Motherboard and all accessories like water pumps, fans, hard drive, and lighting on the Primary PSU.
The GPU's all on the Secondary PSU
I may even go down to the SuperNOVA 1000 G2 or 1000 P2. But before I do that I would have to know that all my 1300G2 cables will work on them. I they don't then I would stay on the 1300G2.

Well it's official: I am now the (soon to be) proud owner of a EVGA P2-1000 Watt Power Supply.
I got an even better deal though because Newegg's stupid app kept crashing with Masterpass, so I found it for $10 cheaper and free shipping on NXICUS, got my $20 rebate, and even a $20 gift card promo for first time customer.

Thanks for the help everyone; now I just have to wait until some really worthy GPU deals pop up. Here's hoping for a 990, TI card or something powerful for the New Year!

Nice, enough power for Intel Xtreme overclocked and dual GPU
or 2-way SLI or even 3-way SLI if power consumption is similar to GTX980.

Just got the 1300 G2, with newegg's price I couldn't beat it. I told the other half that she didn't need to worry, I KNEW exactly what I wanted for Christmas . I have been looking for a new PSU so that I could finish my upgrades, and it's just what I needed to get everything rolling and working smoothly. I'm looking to get the GPU waterblock next week and then the case mods begin .
