okay guys when i overclock my 5960x it seems to be stable on temps ect on any and all benchmarks i can play games and use my pc for any and all i would use it for with Core Temp running i never reach above 58c after hours of game play and overnight benchmarking its the same from 4.0-4.6ghz but if i run prime95 i will be at TJmax of 85c in about 5 minutes of running it....any ideas?

Yeah, it is putting an unrealistic load on your cpu. No need for prime95 at all. Use real bench or Aida 64.

I noticed this while testing my latest cooler/OC. Installed a Swiftech H220X on xmas, and played with my OC a bit. Actually managed to get 4.4ghz with a little less voltage than I was using to get 4.2 previously (all I did before was use an ROG OC default for 4.2).

Anyway, every bench/torture test I run results in low 60s C under load (Aida, Real Bench, Handbrake, etc...) and even in 2 of the 3 Prime95 tests.

Put on the small FFT test in P95, however, and Temps immediately jump into the mid 80s and will even hit low 90s on some cores! And I'm only running 1.15v on the vcore with everything else on auto.

I'm thinking Haswell CPUs don't like that test very much, lol. In any case, I take it with a grain of slat as my CPU will never see that level of sustained load under real world conditions... ever.

My 5930k is the same. Full custom loop and low to mid 60's on all tests i run except small FFT's on prime. Then I jump up to high 80's and say screw it and stop the test. Even folding with 10 threads and 3 GPU's I dont get near that hot. Running IBT on Extreme I still only hit mid 60's.

Forget all those stress test softwares.
Those benchmarking programs seem more trouble than good.

If the build the stable during day to day usage, then it`s stable for day to day usage
If the build is stable during the most taxing games you have, then it`s stable for gaming
If the build is stable for gaming and day to day usage, then
    the build is stable...

Also- when you`ve been tinkering with the software and hardware long enough- you get a "sense" for the health of your system. I trust those senses far more than i would Prime, Aida, Furmark or Passmark or any of them.

I do use 3dmark though- because it`s just so much fun trying to squeeze out a few more points:)

Also i read on the ROG forums that prime95 will damage the 5960x because it floods it with too much wattage..

Always always always... "If I can just get 300 points, I can take the next spot..." 4 hours. Later" just 200 more points and the next spot after the one I wanted is mine! " lol. I love 3D Mark.

Not surprising. It is quite frankly a worthless test. I ran it with my 4770k for 24 hours. Had a BSOD at idle. Those tests don't actually prove anything other than how much heat can truly be produced.
