Amazon has just dropped the price of the MX100 (256) to 99 bucks and I have a $20 giftcard so the price would be 80 bucks for me. I've been trying to decide between the Crucial  and the 840 EVO (equal sizes) and I need input from the people I trust rather than synthetic benches.

The drive will probably end up being a boot drive for my desktop + maybe 1 game (the one i play the most). I know Samsung has the Magician software and I know that can enable using your memory as a buffer and thus increasing speeds up to 5-7GB/sec read/write but I know that some people rave over the Crucials. For OS + 1 game, which would be better (I cant afford more atm)? I want to pull the trigger on a drive soon as my current 60GB Force GT boot drive needs to just be retired to my server.

They're about the same really. Both are fast, reliable, and have a 3 yr warranty. Personally i'd go for the Crucial since it's cheaper.

MX100 is a much better drive as it is using MLC instead of TLC which has much much higher endurance.

It is also one of the best if not the best SSD atm.

I suggest you read this huge SSD round up.

I doubt you'll regret your decision - both are highly-regarded, reliable drives, so you can't really go wrong.  I had the same choice as you, and went with with the MX100 as a secondary to an 850 Pro - I haven't used it much, but it seems quick.  The Crucial drive doesn't come with any management software like the Samsung (all it does is neatly display drive health information, give one-click optimisation, download firmware updates, and give you the option to enable RAPID mode), but you do get a copy of Acronis True Image HD via a download key instead.  Personally, I think RAPID is a bit of a gimmick, because you're using (volatile) RAM as a cache for writes - I'd be wary of what would happen in the event of a power glitch ... Hope you enjoy your new shiny thing!

I had the same dilemma a few weeks ago and don't think you could go wrong with either. All of the Crucial MX100 and Samsung 840 EVO SSD reviews I found were positive. The Crucial usually came out on top because it cost less. I ended up getting the 500GB Samsung EVO with Far Cry 4 for $190 on Amazon. It's amazing how much prices have dropped over the last 3yrs.

True, it's been amazing that the prices have dropped to affordable.  I really wanted a 500GB but i could only spend a total of $150 atm and i wont find an EVO or MX100 for that price. Sure there are others at that price point but not the longevity and performance i desire.

I almost pulled the trigger on a 512Gb MX100 but I cant justify $190 on a drive. If the trend continues then they'll likely be down to $120-$150 next year.

Does MX100 has same spec with Adata SP920? I heard that Adata is OEM from Crucial.

If that's true, maybe I will buy Adata instead because MX100 does not sell in my country.

"The only difference between the SP920 and M550 is that the SP920 uses 128Gbit NAND in all models, whereas the M550 only uses that in the 512GB and 1TB models and the smaller capacities use 64Gbit NAND. That gives ADATA a slight price advantage (128Gbit die has higher density and is thus cheaper) but in turn the performance of 128GB and 256GB models is worse due to fewer dies.

The SP920 doesn't actually support TCG Opal 2.0 or IEEE-1667. This seems to be a feature Micron is keeping to themselves."

FWIW, most typical users will NEVER make the amount of write cycles that it takes to differentiate between the two. It's been calculated out that for your average client to reach the end of life of a TLC based product, they'd have to be using the SSD for over 10 years. Nobody here keeps their equipment that long. I think it's safe to say that TLC vs MLC is simply not relevant in a consumer SSD comparison. The only place it is relevant is when speaking from a server/database hosting perspective.

+1.  TechReport did a destruction test and got a 250GB 840 Basic to 300TB of writes before it started looking unhappy.  (Having said that, I tend to go for higher-rated drives, just because)

That's a pretty solid price as it is!  Once you experience an SSD...you never go back to HDD as boot drive.

That's what I keep hearing. I've been using a SATA II drive for the last 7 years and i've never felt like it was slow. I ordered a WD 1Tb black which should be a lot faster than my old drive and i'll use that until SSDs drop in price. Unfortunately, it's not the best time of year for me to spend that much on a drive, especially after I dropped $350 on the GTX 970 a couple months ago. Make no mistake, SSDs are definitely the future.

I had the same feeling/experience as you - my old PC had a WD Blue boot drive, and would boot to a usable desktop in an acceptable 45s (Windows XP) - it was fine unless you wanted to run through a load of small files.  I built a PC for my parents this year using the WD Black 1TB you've ordered - it boots Linux Mint in about 15s, and is very fast - you'll see about 150-165MB/s a fair bit, and Libre Office, GIMP, etc all take less than 5s to load.  I built myself a new PC recently, using a Samsung 850 Pro and it is unbelievably responsive - it takes marginally longer to boot Windows 8 than it does for me to enter my password, and you barely notice the splash screen for Office 2010 - it's ridiculously responsive.  I'm pretty surprised every time I use it, to be honest (I doubt you'd notice a performance difference between the 850 Pro and MX100 in everyday use).

Same thing happened to me as well, pick up a samsung 840 256gig when they were on sale. Now when I replace my x58 platform the only mechanical drives I want will be for data backups. I use to have two WD blacks in raid 0 and this SSD is just amazing. Never going back. I love my 840 drive only mistake is I should have gotten more then 250 gig drive.
