Recently my EVGA 9800GTX SSC blew up and I have been shopping for a whole new computer, but have now decided to wait for a while. So now I am wondering what video card can I buy today that will still work with this old 790i Ultra motherboard?

Can you post the rest of your PC specs to include make and model of PSU?

Thanks for the reply and sorry I couldn't reply back faster... The machine is: EVGA 790i Ultra motherboard Video Card was a GForce 9800GTX SSC, currently it is a GT 610 so I can use it. CPU is Core 2 Quad Q9450 (2.66 with 12 mb cache) 4GB XMS3 1600 Corsair RAM embarrassingly large power supply Thanks for your advice and knowledge, :)

What's your budget? I'd check into a GTX 760 or GTX 660.

I don't really have a defined budget other than to get something reasonable that gets me through the next year or so until I decide to buy a whole new system. I will check into the 760 or 660. Thanks for the suggestions.

While the 760 is a nicer card, you may run into compatibility issues with the card, as the 790i chipset sometimes has issues with cards using a UEFI BIOS, which the 760 has. The 660 comes without a UEFI BIOS, and may also be slightly more compatible with performance on that board and system, which will lead to less bottlenecking.

Thanks for that awesome advice! That is really appreciated. I will get a 660. Any particular one works better than another, or just whatever I can get a hold of?

The GTX 660Ti is the highest end model with 1344 CUDA cores while the GTX 660 has 960 CUDA cores. You could also look into a GTX 670. Other cards you could look into are a GTX 580, 570 or GTX 480.

All true. The reason I mentioned the 660, and not the 660 Ti, is due to availability. If you can find any of the cards RainStryke mentioned, then you'll be good to go. I'd probably try to stick with a 660 or 660 Ti, however, as you'll be able to later flash the cards to an UEFI BIOS if you upgrade your system to a UEFI compatible motherboard and OS.

Will a single AMD card work in this board, like a 7950?

I'm less familiar with the AMD side of cards, but if that card ships with a UEFI BIOS, then there's still a fair chance that you'll run into a compatibility issue. The only thing you can try is to make sure you've upgraded to the latest BIOS, and hope that the board recognizes the card.
