Hi all,

I'm looking to build a new machine. My current computer is just about 5+ years old and its about that time to start spec'in out a new machine.
It's been a while to say the least. I have some parts i'd like to transplant like vid card, PSU and RAM (if possible). I would entertain a water cooled system for CPU and GPU if its fits into the budget.

All in all, I think around $750 - $1,000 would be acceptable for new parts. I would love to see and hear what you guys think! You've never steered me wrong, well, maybe a little off course. :D

Computers' purpose: Gaming (Mostly FPS and some MMO), I also like to play around with Photoshop and Hammer and other Dev type things.
Overclocking isn't terribly important. but, its fun to do it.

Items that are going to be transplanted:
  • EVGA 04G-P4-3768-KR G-SYNC Support GeForce GTX 760 FTW 4GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 SLI Support Video Card
  • Samsung EVO 500g SSD & 1 1TB WD HDD.
  • CDRom
Items i would also like to transplant if possible:

  • CORSAIR DOMINATOR 12GB (3 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
  • CORSAIR 750TX PSU

Looking for:
  • Motherboard: I would love another EVGA board. I love my  EVGA X58 SLI LE 141-BL-E757-TR. Never had any major issues with it. So, I'm looking for something just as reliable.
  • CPU: Intel
  • Ram: CORSAIR or comparable. 12GB if  I can't use existing RAM>
  • Mid Tower Computer Case - Black or White. Nothing flashy.
  • Cooling System: Air/water (price pending).
  • A northbridge cooler as well.

My current specs:
  • EVGA X58 SLI LE 141-BL-E757-TR
  • Intel Core i7-920 Bloomfield Quad-Core 2.66GHz LGA 1366 130W Processor BX80601920 / XIGMATEK HDT-S1283 120mm Rifle CPU Cooler I5 775
  • CORSAIR DOMINATOR 12GB (6 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600
  • EVGA 04G-P4-3768-KR G-SYNC Support GeForce GTX 760 FTW 4GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 SLI Support Video Card
  • Antec Three Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
  • Samsung EVO 500GB SSD

Anything else I missed, please let me know. Thank you, I really do sincerely appreciate any and all your thoughts, suggestions and ideas!

Re: Looking to build a new computer, need some dvice idea/suggestions 2014/12/14 18:06:58 (permalink)
Platforms have changed a good deal since X58. If you are wanting to stay into the enthusiast line, you will want to go with a X99 set-up with a i7 5820K, it will get you over to the newest platform with DDR4 memory and a 6 core CPU with hyper-threading.

If you want to build a PC built for gaming, you will want to go with a EVGA Z97 FTW board with a i7 4790K. I have not had a EVGA motherboard since X58, but I do remember the jump in quality coming from X38/X48 and the Nvidia chipsets... It was a very nice change. But my budget has not been what it used to be, so I ended up falling into a lower tier and it seems other companies offer a little more bang for the buck when you fall into the lower tier products.

As for moving your RAM over from your X58 set-up, I wouldn't... I suggest moving up to some faster DDR3 RAM like some G.Skill 2400MHz like this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231673&cm_re=g.skill_2400-_-20-231-673-_-Product

For your case, i'd recommend checking out Corsair's line of cases, they have a pretty decent line of tower's. I'm a fan of their 500R and 780T.

Your power supply should work just fine.

Cooling, i'd go with a Corsair H80i or H110 if you don't mind a closed loop set-up. For air cooling, i'd get ThermalRight Macho.

EVGA motherboards are pretty reliable if you have luck.
Example I'm completely sure my Z77 FTW will work next 5-10 years.
Remember my words you will see I can bet in anything.
She have some bugs as people know and problems with faster memory but when I look her I know he will work next few years.
Off course I planned some upgrade on X99 but... we will see.

IMO keep everything you have except the CPU and motherboard. I pretty much do what you do, and I noticed no difference between 1600mhz and 2133mhz RAM. Just get a 4690k and a nice ASUS Z97 motherboard, along with maybe a H110 or some closed loop cooler to cool the GPU. If you end up looking to sell your old cpu/mobo lemme know, I might buy it, would make a good Christmas present for someone I know.

Don't think memory differences really  make all that much difference in performance ..at least that I can
tell...*shrug* Paying more for higher speed memory just means paying more for memory...

Buy the 1600, forget the 2133 ...(that's my opinion)

He already has 12GB of 1600, hence why I told him to stick with it. His rig is actually good as it is, except the CPU which is probably showing it's age.

Yea, the CPU is the bottleneck, its even slightly OC to 3.4 (i think).

Even better! I actually have 24 gigs. Don't ask... Bonus would be me being able to keep most of the machine and using other old parts (GTX 560 and 1TB Drive) to keep it as a 2nd computer or give it to my wife or sister.

Awesome thank you again!

Why the ASUS z97 over an EVGA mobo Balto? I agree with everything in regards to his upgrade just curious if it is preference or something else.

I have seen a loooooot of problems people are having with the newer EVGA boards. If I'm wrong, please correct me, but it seems ASUS has more reliability and less compatibility problems. I have an ASUS mobo, and had one the mobo before this, and both my friends who I built computers for got an ASUS. Haven't had a single hiccup or other problems since purchase.

That is fair enough. Have not built a complete new rig in a couple year. last 2 I built where Z68 FTW boards and had no problems with either build but that is now a bit dated. I did see people having problems with some X series evga boards but have not really been keeping up on X or Z boards in the last year or so.

Thanks for the info

My only word of advice is to do some research before buying any hardware. Don't just go by past purchases to decide which brand of hardware to buy.  Also think about what features you would like the motherboard to support.

I looked at a few Asus on newegg.com for comparisons. They all look tempting. I like ASUS Z97-PRO but not sold on the ASUS Z97-PRO(Wi-Fi ac) its got Wireless built in.

Here's a link for EVGA Z97 FTW vs. ASUS Z97-A / ASUS MAXIMUS VII HERO.

I'll keep looking around on other sites. I know newegg isn't the end-all be-all.

Also, my RAM is Triple Channel... if that matters these days.

I'm getting ready for an upgrade too. My current build is a little older, 780i and a GTX280, so I'll only be reusing my PS (Corsair HX1000) and a blue ray RW drive. I have a OCZ 420w PS that I want to put in my current build so I'll have a backup.

I was looking at Corsair cases but I've decided on a Fractal Design Define R5 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811352049
watched several reviews and it has some nice features and cost is comparable to Corsair's.

I was going to get a H80i cooler but Fractal has one that should be available in US soon, price is comparable to H80i, it has a copper radiator, has refill ports and is expandable.

I looked at some ASUS Z97 boards but I'm thinking of getting a MSI Gaming 7
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130768

The rest will be a 4790K, Samsung 256GB SSD, Corsair Vengeance memory and EVGA 970.

Fractal Design Define R5 is a perfect case for you. It is a massive upgrade from Define R4.

Lots of water cooling options, very quiet and sleek minimalistic look.

As for the CPU I suggest get the i7 5820k.

The LGA 1150 socket is a dead end imo (support is only till Broadwell which is only 3% faster than Haswell IPC).

I would not put all triple channel (3 dimms) on a dual channel motherboard. I would only use 2 dimms 8 GB. To be honest .... I would get a nice new 16 GB kit ... but thats me.

Re: Looking to build a new computer, need some dvice idea/suggestions 2014/12/24 02:05:37 (permalink)
Got my new build done this evening, it's now downloading 136 windows updates. Decided on an Asus Z97 Sabertooth Mark 1 for the motherboard. I ended up leaving my HX1000 in my old computer, didn't think about that the old PS I was going to use in it not having any Sata power connectors. Already had all my other parts and the only PS I could find locally was an older Thermaltake 575w, thankfully they are going to let me use it until they can get me Corsair HX750.

Found out the hard way that the Thermaltake is NOT Haswell compatible. Went to turn it on and got nothing, did some research and found that the Haswell draws so little power when sleeping that older PS's go into protection mode and won't run.
http://www.corsair.com/en-au/support/faqs/power-supplies

The above site had a work around which is to turn off the PS switch and then turn it back on while holding down the power on button.

Very impressed with the SSD, less than 10 seconds to boot Windows. Can't wait to install some newer games, got free Far Cry 4 and Assassins Creed Unity with my Newegg order.

Don't think memory differences really  make all that much difference in performance ..at least that I can
tell...*shrug* Paying more for higher speed memory just means paying more for memory...

Buy the 1600, forget the 2133 ...(that's my opinion)

I made the jump from ddr3 1600 to ddr3 2133 and it's way faster. I really notice the improvements with BF4 while loading maps. Its a night and day difference for me.
But if I was tight on a budget I would get 1600 and use the saved money on the GPU.

You can get 2133/2400MHz for about the same price as 1600MHz right now. I personally don't see a reason, even if you are on a budget... It actually helps FPS in games as well, not just load times.
