Some of you may have heard that the 980 classified gpu underwent a slight vrm change.

Dont freak out over it, according to Jacob it was just a minor change in components to be able to continue production of the classified cards.

These "new" classifieds require a different bios set from the "old" classified cards, so dont go flashing your bios from your older cards onto the new ones, and new bios onto the older ones.

The "new" classified cards CAN be used in SLI with the "old" classified cards.

now that thats out of the way

@ anyone at evga that can give us some info on what exactly got changed on the vrm? Or can anyone provide a picture of the newer vrm so we can try to figure out what changed?

@ anyone who is purchasing a new classified card, if you dont mind taking off the cooler and can take some HD close up pics of the vrm section of card please post those here for us.

Thanks.

I read but I was curious what's happen, I just thought how customers usually don't like such things but looks like all manufacturers love exactly that. Example nobody know that CORSAIR 3-4 months sell something different than specifications, even manufacturer of others parts are not meet with change to stop eventually problems.
We are witnesses of many such things and here...
    - customer after unboxing GTX680 Classified discover that new batch No EVBot and that spread as virus
    - many customers notice extremely bad overclocking memory on GTX780 Classified... Elpida without warning
    - louder fan on GTX780Ti KP Classy replaced with normal even if no reason to start production with different fan than on normal Classy (3 models) proven silent and good.
    - change VRM on GTX980 Classified
I forgot AX1200i after best score on Johnny Guru for that period and confirmed 100% Chemi-con caps customer open PSU and found Capxon ( blacklisted 2-3 years before that). First comment was Why you open PSU, no you lose warranty.
And many many similar situations. Simply customer is not sure what to do. To wait improvements or hurry before shortage.

Well mine are shipped, supposed to be here on the 23rd pending any shipping issues with UPS. Unless someone else posts some pictures before I get mine........ It's 4 screws and I have plenty of TIM here.

as for now only newegg seems to have them in stock, as far as I see.

a bit more details on the changes would be very useful Jacob.

    Minor change to VRM

    What was the problem?

There was no problem.  They just ran out of supply and had to switch to another supplier of a similar component in order to continue making the cards.  Apparently, the other VRM ran at a different frequency or something and therefore required a different BIOS version.  It's not like a top secret spy novel or anything.

This would be a BIG Problem if You happen to be running 4-Way SLI with a Modded Vbios and have to replace even ONE "Original" EVGA GTX 980 Classified with a Newer "Modified" Card that will "Not use the same Vbios as the original Cards"!

I can clearly see in that situation where I would have to get an Exact Original 980 Classified Replacement in order to continue to operate in 4-Way SLI.

Forgot to add in the above Post, That in Addition to the Vbios being different, I am also unsure if the EK EVGA GTX 980 Classified WATERBLOCKS would fit Both the Original and the Modified Cards Either!

one of the reasons i wanted to see actual pictures of the new vrm. aside from different bios, custom coolers might not fit depending on what exactly got changed. Im mostly just curious what the new components are really, doesnt bother me that they had to change, other companies do it all the time, but it would be nice for evga to tell us exactly what changed  because some companies like MSI or gigabyte change stuff then we have to wait to find out that our waterblocks or whatever no longer fit.

God, we can only hope that is not the case!!!!!

BTW, since everyone who has a 980 classy will read this thread, (not a hijack, I have no bomb!)
I just took the rig outside for a quick cleaning and found one of the GPU cooler screws
had somehow came unscrewed and was laying on top of my motherboard!

Why would it be a big problem?  You can read or write to the cards individually based on index number of the card.  All you would need to do is have two modified BIOS files instead of one and name them obvious names so that you don't mix them up.  Modded VBIOS is based off the original VBIOS with some changes.  Change the "new" BIOS in the similar way as you changed the "old" BIOS, and you will get a new modded VBIOS which is different than the old modded VBIOS but behaves similarly.

I believe that they are physically identical.  I believe the only difference is a technical difference regarding the component pin assignments or operating frequency/duty cycle of the VRMs.  Otherwise, the stock coolers would need to be similarly modified.  I am sure that EVGA didn't completely redesign the PCB or cooler just to switch component vendor.  If you look at VRM components, they are a fairly standard size across many manufacturers.

The real question is exactly what was changed?  Just the Voltage Regulator Modules/MOSFETs?  Just the voltage controller/PWM chip?  Both?  Inductors/"coils" also changed in order to adjust for impedance in a new operating frequency range?  Capacitors too for the same reason?
^ I believe that this is more of a curiosity than anything else.  I don't think the physical qualities or performance of the card should be affected in any way.

I would think the stock cooler / heat-sink would not have been retooled so the after-market waterblocks would all be the same, no?

Jacob said that they had to switch components to continue production. In other words, they ran out of their normal component stock. They wouldn't switch components, switch vendors, and put in more expense in testing and developement of a new BIOS just for fun. They did it in order to keep selling cards; so they could keep making money.

Well, to be fair, I don't think he ever directly said that they had to switch due to running out of supply, but in light of what was said, I thought it was strongly inferred.

Yeah, I was pretty pissed about the memory change on the 780 Classifieds. Also, at least from my experience, if you don't purchase one of the first waves of new cards when they're released, you're almost guaranteed to get a worse overclocking card. The 780's I bought a few months ago were HORRIBLE compared to the one I got last year (and even it had the Elpida memory.) Might be a different story on water, but I'm talking apples to apples comparison here.

This is what you get when you run Fire Strike:

GPU-Z, And nVidia Inspector recognize them as EVGA GTX 980. nVidia Inspector shows the bios and has [MODIFIED] after it.
