So, myself and a few other users currently have the EK Supremacy EVO CPU block and we are getting subpar performance.  I do love EKWB and the awesome things they provide when it comes to water blocks, but this block is not performing as we had hoped.  This is a call to Nateman_doo, to see if we can rally enough people to fund a solid CPU block for the x99 platform that will be able to perform top notch on these rigs.

I know Nateman is ALWAYS under high demand, so if you are interested, be patient and lets rally together to help him out so that we can get some fantastic blocks on these fantastic systems.

Currently, I have tried 2 separate Supremacy EVO blocks.  The first couldn't keep the temps of the 5960x below 82c, no matter how I tried to mount it.  The second, I was able to get it down to 73c, but both blocks have flex to the bottom of them, and I am thinking that this is causing contact issues.  I would like to see what Nateman  an provide, as I want my system to run a good consistent temperature at all times.

Who is with me on this?

If I have to purchase a cheap Motherboard, and another CPU, I will do what I have to... I will be looking for a dead board and cpu if that is necessary.

I was just talking to nateman that he should build a block and that you and me were having issues with the EVO and would be willing to solo finance it. So count me in for sure, if his z97 block is any indication of his quality the x99 cpu block will be much improved over the EVO! Nateman_Doo save us!!!

So, I just went to town on my spare block.  Here are the steps to my very first time trying to polish a block:

    Finished Product:

As you can see, this block is a Supremacy, not the EVO.  EK says the EVO was just an upgraded top.  They say that the bowing in the center is normal, and that they won't RMA for that.  I am getting ready to shut down, and lap the other block so that I can get an idea of how the EVO fairs compared to the normal Supremacy.  I would love to be able to get a thicker, more reliable block made by Nateman.

Over on OCN, there is a lot of people curious why I lapped the block instead of the CPU, saying I ruined the block.  The block performs exactly the same as it did before lapping, and the TIM Spreads MUCH better than it did before.  Anyone that says lapping a Haswell-E is a good idea probably isn't considering the warranty.  $45 to replace the copper base of a waterblock vs replacing the whole CPU, I would rather take my chances with a little bit of copper.

I am kind of surprised that it isn't performing worse, like they were saying over there on OCN.  It is my first time lapping anything, and I actually enjoyed it, and may do this to a golden CPU if I can ever get one.

nateman_doo has worked on a CPU block in the past. But with his old machine not being as precise as he wanted and then all the board blocks he does now it's never been revisited that I know of. Here's his thread on it: http://forums.evga.com/Finally-Air-Cooled-CPU-Waterblock-m395778.aspx?high=air+cooled+water+block

It's not the prettiest, but I love the design and theory behind it. A couple years back I tried to get him to work on it some more, but nothing came of it.

Sounds like a plan, I have X79 Dark blocks from him and they are awesome.  I would love to see a CPU block, and if it was X99 it should fit X79 for us people who haven't upgraded.  Also, this may be the perfect time to perfect and finish AIR COOLED WATER BLOCK!

Not to take any business away from Nateman here, but @ScarlettTech, have you tried any non EK's, like a Swiftech or a XSPC?  I know a few who have had great luck with the XSPC blocks and I have had excellent use out of my Swiftech CPU blocks over the years.  Maybe as something to tide you over until Nateman can perfect his?

I have yet to get a different brand, but I am looking at the Swifttech and Koolance blocks for this CPU, and they both seem to perform better on the 2011-3 in tests.  I am not impressed with the EK block at all, with this CPU.  For others, it has been perfect as a matter of fact, but the current state of affairs are not the greatest.

I would look hard at the current gen Switftech and XSPC.  I have had nothing but good things to say about them.  I have an Apogee HD on my Dark and zero complaints, it keeps things nice and cool.  Had it at 4.6 and never got the temps you mentioned, even under max mem on LinX.  Everyone I know who has a Raystorm has said stellar things about it.

I would love to have a uber block by Nateman as well, but that will take time, HD (maybe they have a newer release, didn't check) or Raystorm I think are likely the best bets right now.

Ahh good, let me know how it works.  I haven't gotten a new one since my HD, so I hope their XL performs at least as well as my HD.

I haven't had a great experience with either the Koolance 380i or the Swiftech Apogee XL with my 5960x honestly, but that's for another thread soon. The EK Evo with jetplate J3 consistently gave the best mounts for my CPU anyway.

I actually had the Supremacy's (2 of them) and bought the Evo upgrade kit for one of them.  I think I may order a simple EVO if the Apogee doesn't help out completely.

Not sure about the 5960X performance and the EVO. The 4790k performance on the EVO is less effective than natemans block and his cools the chipset and VRM also. Currently running from a Monsoon res+d5 to a 240mm EK PE rad w/ Corsair SP120's to the Evo/nateman block. Currently its back on air until I get the rest of the parts in. I just don't want a whole watercooling assembly dragged out on the desk for 1 or 2 months more.

You are talking about a monoblock style right? Those almost always work better than the respective CPU only block.

Yes the mono block, but it is cooling 3 component vs 1 components. I dont see how that is physically possible to cool 3 components vs 1, and be cooler, if they are similair designs. You have the cpu hit first then warmed up more by vrm than more by chipset then cooled vs cpu heated and cooled.

The chipset doesn't need anything to cool it- it can be there naked and be fine. The VRMs are a mixed bag and dependent on the actual motherboard. Some well designed boards have VRMs that barely get warm. The larger contact area that the CPU IHS has with the monoblock helps out. Look at the reviews of the EK monoblocks for the R4BE and M6I- they are all cooler than the EK Supremacy which is used in the monoblocks as well.

I will tell you what, since seta said that he got a 5-10° difference in the Stinger block I will make a few of those blocks as testers.  See if you guys can get the same results.  I already have the code for it, so there isn't much R&D involved other then to design a separate Delrin fixture to screw it too.

Will that keep you guys busy for a while?

I will say this, I am getting ready to start projects that require serious lapping.  I am building a machine dedicated to lapping.  I intend to make that air cooled block, but lets start by making a baseline project (the Stinger CPU block).

I would purchase that, if not for keeping cooler, than just as a collectors piece. Also, What would it take for you to round off the stinger block, like the x99's blocks?

um, I can do some bevels, or corner radi if you want. I have the bits to do bevels, but corner radi I have to purchase.

    Here is a bevel:
