I just picked up an EVGA GTX 970 FTW today to replace my 770 Lightning. After I got everything installed and did a clean driver install, I decided to do a power cycle for good measure. After I did a full shutdown and boot, the display comes on locked at 1080p (my monitor is a 1440p ASUS PB278Q connected through DP) and can't be changed until you do a soft reboot. I did a couple of more power cycles and got the same result. I turned off the UEFI Windows boot feature on my mobo and the problem goes away.

Its the damnedest thing. My 770 Lightning didn't have this issue, so I'm convinced that either a BIOS GOP implementation issue with the card or some weird incompatibility with my motherboard (MSI MPOWER z87). It's by no means a deal breaker (seeing how I only shutdown my system a couple times a month), I was just curious if this is an isolated issue.

Have you tried using DVI to see if you can duplicate the issue ?

The thought never crossed my mind, actually. I'll give that a shot and report back.

When you changed out your cards did you remove MSI Afterburner and or EVGA Precision X (Remember do not save Profiles).
And also remove all NVIDIA Drivers and allow the OS to install the Standard VGA Driver, takes at least one reboot.
Your OS is now listed so the above Standard Video Driver applies to Windows 7.
On Windows 8.x you also need to disconnect from the Internet so that it will not auto install the NVIDIA Driver.

Now installed your NEW Card Reboot one time then install the NVIDIA Drivers then restart and connect back to the Internet (Windows 8).

Now you can install EVGA Precision X and or MSI Afterburner.

I picked up one of these last nite to replace 2x 580GTX, to my surprise the idle fan noise is a  30-40% higher with this single card alone. From POST to idle in windows 8.1 for half an hour. The fan speed never changes, likewise it doesn't increase when i game. I saw the same problem on this forum for another 9xx user, and the moderator suggested he do a flash BIOS update to the card. Is there an updated BIOS for this card as well that may address this issue?

Have you tried using DVI to see if you can duplicate the issue ?

It seems to be a problem with DisplayPort. I swapped with a DVI cable, power cycled and haven't had the same problem.

Good to hear you found the problem.
If you need to use display port.. open a support ticket with Nvidia to see if it's driver issue.
