If I'm to build a new PC, I wouldn't go for DDR3 memory. Would rather consider X99 with DDR4 as it's future proof for now, and that means you would need to look into a different CPU (5820k, 5930k or 5960X). I would definitely consider EVGA brand for my GPU, they offer excellent customer service and solid products. Some motherboards come with Wifi btw.

Is this a build for gaming? If it is, the build list looks good. Those are all great parts, and the Hero mb should run well for gaming.

Personally, I wouldn't touch the X99 mb right now. I'd let the first wave of DDR 4 motherboards go and if interested buy a more mature product later. But that's just me.

The problem is that price with that goes up.. a lot up.. I am slightly more into L1150 with DDR3

And yeah this is a gaming build: -) I might replace ram though for 2400 one.

You've got a good plan already for what you want to do with this, and yeah the DDR3 2400 would would work very well. I'd love to see some pictures when you get this completed, it sounds like a nice build.

I see that you like the Corsair K70 with red LED's. Have you checked out Corsair vengeance RGB K70 keyboard. The software for it does have some issues but Corsair is working on fixing the issues.

Hi,
I am mostly after red colour :-) I am already working on my old mouse to glow red.. (Just because I like it and I don't want to change it)

I have one more question - with regards to RAM, some people advice to go with 2400mhz.. I am thinking Trident.X 2400mhz cas 10.

I will stick to DDR3 ...

So im still confused with 2400mhz ram and i7 4790k CPU.
Apparently I only need to go to bios and set XMP and it will all work? (CPU goes 1.5v ram 1.65v)

Some people state that this is unstable/safe(?)
Some people say it will significantly increase CPU temps (?)
It will decrease CPU lifespan (?)
It will void CPU warranty (?)
Thank you

1. It is very stable and very safe.
2. No, it won't significantly increase cpu temps. It has the potential to increase them but not significantly from what I've read and from my own experience I've never seen a difference.
3.  Intel officially supports memory at 1600MHz, however the CPU is capable of using memory up to 3000MHz or more.
4. The stock voltage with DDR3 is 1.5 volts. As guidance the maximum JEDEC recommended voltage is 1.575 and supposedly modules should be able to handle 1.975 volts. Will it void the cpu warranty? IDK but how could it ever be proved what DDR voltage you used?

Looks like a very fast PC, ram speeds do diddly squat for gaming, get what ever looks the nicest. A while back I was benchmarking and I seen my ram was set at 1600mhz, so I switched it to xmp in bios, which is 2133mhz, and it did not improve my score.

Re: My new build 2014/12/18 00:58:11 (permalink) ☄ Helpfulby taksdd 2014/12/18 15:06:28
I would change the CPU cooler from Corsair H100i to Switech H220x/H240x as it uses a brass radiator instead of Aluminum and you can expand it by adding more radiators and GPU waterblock. The CPU waterblock that comes with it is also a Top end one (Apogee XL costs $60 alone).

I would also change the monitor to BenQ XL2411Z/XL2420Z/XL2430T as it has significantly better color reproduction, better frame and stand, better OSD and can be further tweaked by BB utility + VT 1502.

Also why would you want to get a wireless adapter for your desktop that would be stationary when you can get a powerline adapter that has much lower latency and more consistent experience (no interference from IR and microwaves).

Wifi because I dont want to put cables through my living room and that would be the only way.

Could you please tell me more about what is colour reproduction (How is it defined? Any stats etc?)

Not sure what is better in frame. Also not sure what is better in OSD. Thanks :-)

A power line doesn't need a long cable. You just plug your Ethernet cable from router then through AC wall then from AC wall then to the back of your computer.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sue1Zvmh8JA

Color reproduction means Black looks like black and not grey or something, white looks white not yellowish white or blueish white. In other words the colors looks what they are supposed to look and doesn't have the ugly color tint/dull. Of course there would be limitation as it is using a TN panel but the Benq XL-series has the best color reproduction Ive seen on a TN panel.

By Frame I mean the Benq uses a matte (non reflective) plastic bezel that feels quality unlike the disgusting glossy bezel that Asus uses. It also has a much better stand.

by OSD(On Screen Display) I mean all the settings are easily accessible and you don't have to switch to different profiles while doing something. On Asus, If you manually input color calibration setting on the OSD, it does not work on certain application so you have to constantly switch profiles.

Hi,
I have looked at BenQ:
XL2411Z
XL2420Z
XL2430T

These are really awesome but .. why is there so much difference between 11Z 20Z and 30T? I will definetly go for one of them, not sure which one though..

Its very important for me to protect my eyes (As I suffer terrible headaches etc) and these BenQ monitors really seem to handle any issues related to eyes.

The XL2411Z is the cheapest of the bunch and doesn't have the same features as XL2420z (like Dual HDMI, Displayport, USB hub and audio passthrough) but it uses the exact same internals(hardware, controller, LCD coating, etc...) as XL2420z and the picture quality is exactly the same.

The XL2430T is intended to replace the XL2420z and it has updated design and ports (USB 3.0 instead of USB 2.0 and the Audio passthrough is now split for mic and headphone).
It is using the exact same panel as XL24xxz. https://pcmonitors.info/benq/benq-xl2430t-144hz-xl-model-with-a-new-design/

Some people report that it has better image quality than XL24xxz in strobe backlight mode.

Hi,
Im just thinking - Im not going to connect monitor to TV so:
- I dont need Dual HDMI.
DVI should be capable of transfering full HD in 144hz so im fine there(?)
USB Hub - totally not interested.
Audio - again.. not interested.

So generally I should be fine with XL2411Z(?)..

Yup just make sure you get the XL2411z with v2 or higher firmware as all the XLxxxxz(xl2411z, xl2420z, xl2720z) has problem with the v1 firmware.

Do you think all features like the anti blur, flicker free, reduced blue.. are excatly same for these models? Im still tepted by 30T as I absolutely love the design.

The XL2411z and XL2430t has all the exact same feature you mentioned but I am not sure how the XL2430T compares as some people speculate it comes with a better firmware that reduces crosstalk/ghosting.

THe XL2430T is 34% more expensive compared to XL2411z ($376 vs $250)

Looks like a nice PC - similar in spec to mine...

taksddStorage:Samsung 840 Pro Series 256GB 2.5" Solid State Drive

Unless there's a massive price difference, I'd go for the 850 Pro instead - 10 year warranty (vs 5), a bit faster and better I/O consistency, and a basically inexhaustible 150TBW endurance rating.

taksddPower Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA 1000G2 1000W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply

Are you planning on going with SLI or massive over-clocking in the future?  The build you've listed won't push past 430-450W under load, so you could drop down to the 750W version ...

Current PC: Intel Core i7 4790K, Noctua NH-U12S, Asus Z97-Pro, 16GB Corsair Vengeance Pro 1866Mhz RAM, Samsung 850 Pro 256GB, Crucial MX100 512GB, Western Digital Black 2TB, EVGA GTX 970 SC (blower), Pioneer BDR-209DBK, Fractal Design Define R4 + Noctua NF-A14 FLX fans, Corsair AX760 PSU, Dell U2713HM

Fair enough :)

No prob.  It's a very good SSD - my PC takes ~6s to get to a login prompt once it's finished POSTing, and there's no slowing down once you're into the desktop...

If you go with Samsung install the magician 4.5 software. Set rapid mode to on and set performance to Max.
With 4.3 I was reading and writing at 1 gig a sec now I'm benching over 1 gig a sec with 4.5.
The software will also monitor the ssd health and keep it up to date.

I sure hope someone reads this....I wanted to run Quad SLI Titan X but I'm not sure which of the Titan X to purchase.
These are the components I have so far for my build:
128GB Corsair Dominator Platinum Series DDR4
Asus X99 Deluxe Mobo
Coolmaster Cosmos II Full-Tower Case (If you have a better case in mind let me know)
EVGA Super Nova 1600 watt T2 Power Supply
I7 5960X
4 x Samsung 850 Evo 1TB SSD's
My hopes are to build one Insane Ultimate PC. If you can give any information on what I need to get or to change it would be very helpful. I was hoping to build something like this but much much better.
