Hope I'm not too early on this event, but I'm as eager as can be.
This is Prime Grid's Winter Soltice Challenge, and the last one in the Challenge series for 2014.
This goes from 18-21 Dec and mind the odd start time again: Dec 18 23:03 to Dec 21 23:03 (UTC)
What we have here, is PPS (Sieve) and one very special thing with this one, you can crunch with GPU.
I say you can... but both CPU and GPU are supported.
I took both of them for a spin, to see what we was up against.
There is a huge time difference on those two WU's.

Here's a word from yodap from last Challenge
yodap
Don't forget, the last challenge of the year should be right up our GPU alley. PPS-Sieve. Nice short WU's that bring a hefty point package.
I want to to hear some coil whine from everybody!

And hefty point packages those GPU Sieves give. That is, if you do the GPU Sieves.
Just look at this:

Notice the Run times.
One Cuda PPS takes 8mins, while a CPU PPS takes 26hrs. (GTX980SC/ i7 5960x @3,5Ghz)
And they deal the same credit.
Some might take this into consideration before choose what road to take.
If you want to run GPU only, your PG preferences should look like this:

Important to deselect CPU in your pref, or you will be flooded with 30hr wu's.

The CPU wu's runs pretty cool and nice:

My max temp barely reached 80c
While the GPU temp look like this:

And yes... I broke down and got a EVGA 980SC

I was hoping someone would do a HT on/ off run for comparison, and tell us about it.

With our last GPU challenge in mind, I've got high hopes for us and EVGA as a brand name on this one.
Ok guy's, good luck, and let's give'm all a bad slam attack.

T minus 15hrs, and all GPU's is set to dry out.
I'll be late for this party though. Got a message from my electrical company the other day.
At exact same time this challenge will start, they will take out the power. They need to replace a whole transformator box, and they will not turn on until 7hrs later.
This was a big bummer for me, but I'll try to catch up when I'm powered up.

Those PG challenges collect some prominent team's. With last GPU challenge in mind, we may be noticed, and even perhaps then some

Hope to see many of you

I'll have to dust off my amd card and see if I can get it crunching.  I always seem to run into problems with boinc and GPU's.

I will bring my 780 Ti and its older sibling the 680 to the party.  Clearing out the Collatz WU's on my 780 and GPU Grid from the 680 atm.

I will be ready to roll at 6:03 PM Eastern start time.

Make sure to check the challenge page before downloading for sure! It will say when it's live. T-minus ~44 minutes!

    Annnnddd they're off!

Its looking like the 680 is running these in approximately 8.5 minutes and the 780 Ti is 7 minutes.

    What's everbody OC'd at?

    Here's my stable numbers:

    780 SC: 1188Mhz - 8 Minutes
    760 SC: 1267Mhz - 10.25 minutes
    650 Ti: 1306Mhz - 16.5 Minutes

For the power/core comparison the 760's just stomp all over this project

Finally, after 7 1/2 hrs, I'm fully up and running.
I'm very happy to see all the EVGA names on the list.
With 108 teams, and 440 participants, I find 4th place more than acceptable.
Some of the teams in front of us, has a couple of dudes, whom I suspect dispose a tad more GPU power than the average gamer
We have a couple of exiting days ahead.

Crunch hard teammates and may the force be with you

I finally got my HD 7870 running after some annoying obstacles.  For some reason my Asus 2P workstation board wouldn't recognize it, so I installed it on my bench system for this challenge.  It started out around 21-22 minutes per WU, but after messing with the clocks this morning it is down to around 20 minutes each.  Not great compared to all your fancy newfangled GPUs, but better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.
