Just be forewarned before buying the Shield Tablet that there is a HUGE issue with cracks on the tablet. Nvidia has yet to resolve this issue and it has been plaguing the product since release. They said they were fixing it, but users are still reporting the issue with the newest batches. Here is 62 pages of the issue at the Geforce forums: https://forums.geforce.co...-tablet/cracked-edges/

I'm wondering what kind of glass is used? From some reviews I have read it is a great product, but it is mentioned it gets hot when pushed. Cracks are unacceptable. Hopefully they get replaced without a big hassle.

From what I've read its not the screen that is cracking, but rather the corners. Nvidia claims that, "The crack is cosmetic and does not affect performance." Call me picky, but for $400 I wouldn't want cracks either.

Yeah, that's it. I bought one when they first came out and returned it when I started to notice cracking. I got my money back but had to pay a restocking fee.

Sad having to pay a restocking fee for a defective item. Cosmetic, or not.

Yeah, Newegg... That's why I usually buy from Amazon.

This is exactly why I didn't buy the Shield Tablet... after seeing the shoddy build quality of the TN7, I didn't expect much better with their next device. If Nvidia wants people to take their products seriously, they need to actually put some effort into quality and stop cutting so many damn corners.

BTW, they charged you a restocking fee?! That implies that they intend to resell it to someone else. That's not only wrong but just shady... I thought Newegg was better than that. Say what you will about Samsung's "plasticky" build quality, but they never seem to have issues like these, at least not on such a large scale. If Samsung was to buy some K1 chips and make a proper "gamer's tablet", I'd have my credit card out ready to order the moment it released.

Nvidia should know better than to cut corners on build quality like that. No way i would accept paying restocking fee for a factory defect like that. I would contact my credit card company and ask for help getting a full refund.

Newegg isn't what it use to be. They have one of the worst customer service during Christmas shopping season. You email them and it takes them a week to reply. If you wait for live chat support you will be waiting HOURS to chat with someone.  Amazon you only have to wait 1-3mins max to chat with customer service agent.

Oh, Amazon is A LOT BETTER than New Egg. I only use New Egg when I absolutely have to! Like, when Amazon.com does not sell something that New Egg does, like in this case when I bought mine.

Wrap it in glass and this is what happens. What did they expect? It should have been metal or rubberized plastic.

Huh? The only part of the tablet that is glass is the screen... the rest is plastic.

    Woah...
The cracked corners are plastic?  That's some interesting plastic.  It's like rock.

The sad part is that Nvidia said they fixed it, but then people were getting cracks on the replacements. Plus, the FTE version gets cracks... They have yet to fix the issue. At first they were very active in communicating about the issue on their forums... However, they completely stopped communicating with customers about the issue. Now, there are reports of RMA's getting denied, even with pictures being sent with the RMA requests.

This is one of those times where buying extended warranty will be worth the money.

Or just cut your losses and choose to ignore the cosmetic damage.

Back when I read about the issue (probably about when this thread started), Nvidia said that it was going to be changing the blend of the composition for the plastic, which should resolve the issues.  I believe they also stated that people were free to RMA them at the time, but they wouldn't likely have the new batch of tablets available for a few weeks to months for people interested in having it swapped out.  If they have changed the shell's construction, and it's still having issues, then that's pretty disappointing, or maybe they don't really know what the issue is.

Hard to say if its just cosmetic or not. I don't know what's behind it. Could it allow moisture inside. who knows. The crack is only going to get worse over time. Do companies no longer do spot checks and test new products before releasing them.

Yeah, I've also seen pictures where the whole back starts coming off. I saw a picture where a huge chunk near the stylus came off leaving a giant whole... I just barely noticed it start to crack, on mine, and sent it right back. I knew it wouldn't be a good sign. I'd rather buy something else and wait till they get the whole thing resolved, if they do. I hear the last Tegra Note had many issues as well.
