There is a nut that I have install in the corner but the instructions are vague. Where do I put the nut? Do I put it under the backplate or under the PCB?

First, take out the 5 screws from the video card. The 4 that forms a square, and the one on the other corner. Line up the backplate to the video card. Put the 4 screws in the part where it forms a square. The longer screw goes in that other corner.

Under the pcb.  Make sure you use the longer screw.

yes, under the PCB with the provided screw by the backplate.
It's a bit harder to tighten it but u'll get it eventually. When I was putting the backplates on my 2 GTX 970s, I was like "oh man this is impossible..." But then I did it in under 15 mins for 2 cards.

So which screw type do you use?  I just received my four backplates and the screw package contains 10 screws and one nut.  5 screws are fine pitch and 5 screws are coarse thread, self-starting type.  Which is the correct screw type to use?

Well the question turns out to be a moot point, anyway.  Even though the backplate product tab for compatibility shows my cards as compatible, they are not.  The screw positions don't even come close at any of the positions listed on the included installation sheet.  I gather the backplate is only compatible with the ACX cards and not the reference cards.  I have put a request in for a Tech Support call and RMA but won't hear anything from EVGA I gather till Monday because of their holiday hours.

EVGA GTX 970 Backplate (100-BP-0972-B9) is compatible with both types.   http://www.evga.com/Products/Product.aspx?pn=100-BP-0972-B9
Did you put it with the Evga letters upside down like it's supposed to be?

Yes, I tried to install it like the picture on the install sheet with the logo lettering upside down with the card right side up in front of you.  SLI connector notch to the top, right. My PCB are not full length as in the installation instruction pictures.  The furthest left side of the back of cards are already covered by a plastic protection sheet covering the leftmost 1/3 length of the card.  There are no holes visible on the left, top and bottom mounting points of the 4 screw "box".  The right side, top and bottom holes of the box are off by about 1/4"  The only mounting point that lines up is the SLI connector notch mounting point that would use the screw and nut to secure the backplate. I'll have to take one of the cards back out of a computer and take a picture of the card and backplate together on the kitchen table.

My cards P/N is 04G-P4-1972-KR.  Here are the photos.  I was incorrect.  Two of the five mounting screw positions line up.  The SLI connector corner and the bottom, rightmost position of the "box"  The bottom, leftmost position of the box is over "air", that is the card tapers away on that edge and the backplate completely misses the PCB.  These backplates are definitely incompatible with my card P/N.  Maybe my cards are of a newer design than the original P/N that was compatible with the backplate.  I find that amazing since these cards have only been available for a couple of months at the most.

This page is what made me believe that the card was compatible.

My card's P/N is listed on the compatibility tab.

Hmmm, I see it's listed there too. Best thing to do is call them Monday, and ask why it doesn't fit. Post back.

Yes, I left a partial message on the EVGA voicemail since it cut me off mid explanation.  I also sent an email to Tech Support to call or email ASAP to get the RMA process going.  I will update the thread when I learn more.

Talked to Customer Support and Tech Support just now and they seem to agree with me that the backplates don't fit my cards.  They said I will have to wait til Monday for Customer Support management gets back to decide what to do with my situation.

Talked to the Customer Service manager today and got an answer finally.  They apologized for the mistake of listing the reference blower design cards as compatible with the backplate.  Fits the ACX style cards only and they have updated the product description and compatibility list to remove my cards so no one else has my problem.  They will be issuing a refund of my purchase of 4 backplates today and sending me a T-shirt for my troubles.  I was hoping they might have come up with a backplate for my cards but they said that wasn't going to happen. Overall happy with the outcome I guess but wish it hadn't happened in the first place and that it took so long to resolve, but with the holiday schedule understand the delays.

    Cheers. Keith

    Dear Mr. Myers,

Thank you for your time on the phone today and once again I am very sorry for any confusion or inconvenience caused.

I can confirm for anyone reading this that we do not offer a backplate to fit the blower style GTX 970 cards model 04G-P4-1970-KR or 04G-P4-1972-KR.
