I have been having this problem for a long time and cannot figure out what the issue is. Everytime I download a torrent using any program (utorrent,bittorrent,etc.) my computer freezes about 5 min in. It also happens when using a program called PopcornTime, which also accesses torrent files. My computer never freezes any other time. Is there some network settings that need modified? Should I try buying a different NIC and try that? Please, any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

First I would take a look at the driver for the NIC you are using. Update that to the latest code and troubleshoot from there. If you are having lockup issues with any kind of device, generally it would be due to some kind of fault with the underlying code of the driver. Not necessarily the hardware itself initially. Especially torrent like applications of which can flood the channels for inbound/outbound file transfers. Take a look there first and then consider a different NIC if that does not resolve the problem.

You shouldn't be talking about that popcorn program on here.  But other general usage of bit torrent is fine.

You could check the system log, you might find some more information there.

Broken torrents can sometimes put a lot of garbage in your temp files so make sure those are cleaned up.
