I'm in an odd situation, in that i'd like to finally go from a 1080p monitor to 1440p and maybe even 4K, with adding
a second gpu. Trouble is, i have the original Titan and it's impossible to find one on ebay and even if so, i'd rather
sli a couple 980's(or future 980ti's?).

But i don't want my Titan gpu to drop that much in price..should say a 980TI is released with 6 or 8GB of
VRam.

However, i played some Shadow of Mordor and it does use the 6GB of the Titan's vRam really well.

 1) Should i just wait until the 980TI  6 or 8GB are released in late 14 or early 15'? and then sell off
this Titan..and go SLI with that new gpu?

 2) Or should i get what i can now for this Titan and go with an SLI of the 980's? (or 970's to save $)

It's just odd to have a gpu that i cannot sli when i first wish to SLI..lol.

btw: should i replace my motherbd that can only handle 2 way sli with a 3 ways sli motherbd? I seen
the number on how 3 way sli gives some 35% more performance over 2 way..at most, and in some case
it's almost no advantage.
I'm thinking just stay with my motherbd as 2 way is probably the way to go for a long time.

TIA

My pc specs:

-3820 cpu @ 4.2GHz
-16GB DDR 3
-Titan sc'ed [evga]
-850w p.s

Titan it's still  an excellent card.
You can still get Titan on ebay for around $650-700, as a matter of fact my nephew just picked 1 up for $750 in almost new condition to sli with his older 1 I sold him last year.

I'd keep your Titan! Just as a personal opinion/preference, I'll take 2x vanilla Titans over 2x 980's anyday! that extra VRAM will be nice for years to come! I'd just keep a sharp eye out for another one on EBAY. 2x Titans/Titan Blacks in SLI is really the way to go IMHO. Sure they are a few FPS behind the 980, but when cranking those high resolutions, and other future games, I think the Titan will be the go to card!

I went from 2x TitanBlack:SC to 2x 980:SC and got very little performance boost @ 1440p.  I wanted less heat in the 10'x12' man-cave and it was worth it for that reason. I wouldn't call a 980 over Titan a true upgrade, specially at higher resolutions.

I'm waiting for the 980ti's also if they are even released and it's very doubtful they will offer 6 or 8 gb of vram probably just 4gb. Although I'd love to see 6gb would be great..

When to upgrade will be up to you, sorry to say.  Some folks will upgrade as soon as new hardware comes, as soon as new games come; and there isn't a break (unless one competitor is lagging new generation, which ironically allowed for Titan's existence in the first place).

I say stick to your price bracket, nVidia created Titan to give professional level products to the masses while AMD took their time to actually have something better than GTX680; in the meantime their new GTX980 is faster than Titan Black at half the price, still waiting for AMD to come up with something better than R9-290X.  No doubt nVidia will succeed the Titan Black with another powerful $999 item to justify paying so much for it.

If you either can't wait or don't want to spend so much, then GTX980 is your option; but I suggest you wait as Titan Black's successor will be worth it, we just don't know when it's coming.  It has to be soon; there is a rumor AMD will have something marginally faster than GTX980 so far codenamed "Fiji", won't make Titan Black sales any better and nVidia has to do something.

It could be called Titan-X, or may not be branded as "Titan", definitely will not be part of the GTX900 series if it is priced $999+ for a single GPU.

there are a few titans being sold here on the EVGA forums in the marketplace, its where I got mine a couple weeks to a few weeks ago for 475 for a Titan Signature.
It would be cheaper for you to be a little patient, ask around, here on the forums than ditching your Titan for a couple GTX 980's now with GTX Titans going for anywhere from 400-500, owning a GTX 780 TI I can honestly say Stock vs Stock my Titan womps my GTX 780 TI in gaming and benching... the big plus for me was I no longer experience crashes in Maya. I would not go with 2x 980's when you can get a second Titan for cheaper than a GTX 980 here on the forums.

yes there will be a new Titan it will be coming with the new 980's probably anytime next year from jan to april the difference will be the die size since NVidia didn't meet their expectations with the initial Maxwell release on just size. So yup lephron is right we are going to be seeing a new $999 card that will be the Titan Blacks successor in a Maxwell flavor.
