Hey all, Today I redeemed my free game code that game with my new GTX 970 SC. Unfortunately, when I attempt to open Far Cry 4, I hear a horrible whining noise which I figure to be coil whine. Half a second after the game loads initially, my computer crashes completely to a black screen. I have heard that many people are having trouble with coil whine with the 970, but I haven't heard of any crashes. Here's my setup: EVGA GeForce GTX 970 SC Intel i7-4790 CPU @ 3.60GHz 8.00 GB RAM LOGISYS PS575XBK 575W ATX12V SLI Ready Power Supply ACX 2.0 Is the issue with my power supply, or do I just have a faulty card? Supposedly 550W is enough for the card, but I don't know if I just have a crappy power supply. I've tried to open the game after reducing the clock of the card by at least 30%. I went back to Far Cry 3 and still noticed an ear piercing whine, but with no crash this time. Thanks for any help in advance.

I'm not entirely sure, but I can check if I open up my computer. I know its made by Logisys.

Well that's not exactly a quality psu and all psu's do age over time, a 575w power supply after a year or even 6 months of heavy use may not be capable of putting out a full 575w. Now are you sure its not the psu thats producing the coil whine? Cheaper units under load have been known to do that in the past. To test you can do something like roll up some paper to form a "tube" and point it at the psu/gpu to see if its louder pointed at one component or the other. In my option, I would replace that power supply anyway. You can pick up a nice 750w evga power supply which are of far better quality then the logisys for $120 and it will last years. Assuming you don't end up needing more then 750w. I've seen cheap power supplies work just fine, and other blow out and take cpu's/gpu's down with them.

I've only had the 575W for 5 months or so. It seemed to perform perfectly fine with my 560ti which uses almost the same power as the 970 I think. I was planning to pick up the 750W around Christmas time. Do you think it's safe to continue with what I have for now while avoiding too much stress on the system?

Too put it gently, your power supply is a piece of garbage. It puts out a MAX of 300 watts on the +12v Replace your PSU before you damage your GPU.

If you are going to build a pc with quality parts, never go cheap on a psu.

Thank you all for the help. I think I'm going to put my two year-old 560ti back in for now until I get a new PSU. I'm looking at either the EVGA 750 G2 or the 850 G2.

Seriously, I wouldn't do any gaming with that PSU even with your 560ti. As you pointed out, it draws a similar amount of power to the 970. A PSU failure could take out more than just your GPU. 300 watts (max) is way under the recommended minimum.

So is it safe to just do web browsing for now? I'm going home for the week for Thanksgiving break, so I'll pick up a 750w then.

Sure, that should be fine. Frankly, I'm surprised you didn't have trouble with your 560ti. FarCry4 is a pretty graphically intense game so, that might be why or the 970 might be more sensitive to voltage drops from an inadequate +12v being supplied. Any good quality 750 watt should be fine. Seasonic, Corsair, EVGA, Antec, Silverstone.

Yeah, my 560ti ran for months on the 550W without a single issue. I never once heard whining or experienced a crash. I didn't overclock it, however.

Play games if you want with the 560ti, its fine for the mean time. If you plan on staying with one gtx 970, a 600 watt psu is more than adequate and usually sell for half the price of a 750 watt, just get a bronze or up rating. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817438014 EVGA 600 watt bronze, $35.00 after rebate.

I don't think risking his system with a $20 PSU that outputs a MAX of 300 watts on the +12v rail is a good idea. He's been lucky so far.

Well it could already be going downhill towards failure, the timing may just be coincidence. Honestly that power is super cheap and you have been running it near/at its max labeled wattage for 5 months. I was being nice and recommend replacing it, personally I wouldn't sleep well at night if I had a logisys power supply in one my computers or a computer I built for someone else. I've seen to many cases where a cheap power supply blows out and destroys some other hardware along the way.

Yeah, I'm still new to building PCs so I didn't know what psu would be best. My PC isn't running any games until I have a new one.

Not to beat a dead horse here...but for others who may read this, the worst thing to go cheap on when building a system is the PSU. It's the one component that if it blows, can take the rest of the system with it. Anyhow, if you stick with the major PSU makers, several which I listed above, you can't go wrong. Basically it will come down to how much you want to pay for higher efficiency, modular cable connections and warranty period.

I really appreciate all of your help. I have about $150 to spend on a new psu, so do you think the EVGA 750w G2 is a good purchase? Or should I just get the 850w G2 in case I do SLI in the future?

The 850 G2 is an excellent PSU. http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story&reid=377. If you're even considering going SLI, I'd probably go with the 850. While the 750 would be adequate, I've always been fan of having more PSU overhead. Plus, they run cooler and most efficient when loaded between 50-80% of their capacity. Right now Amazon has it on sale for $129. http://www.amazon.com/EVGA-SuperNOVA-80PLUS-Certified-220-G2-0850-XR/dp/B00IKDETOCThe Egg has it for $119 afer rebate... http://www.newegg.com/Pro..._-17-438-018-_-Product
