78.3 and 73.4. As I mentioned though I get strange results when I OC... More specifically, FPS gets reduced 50%. Makes absolutely no sense. And anything over 90~100mhz on the core results in black or blue screens of death within seconds. All of which I posted about on here days after I got the cards, but got very little response aside from the temp issue, which I resolved by getting a new case (and in the process, building a whole new system lol). But never got anywhere with the fact I still had to take control of the fans to keep them under 80C, and not a peep on that OCing resulted in fps rates to get slashed in half. Honestly, I sort of think they're duds. Actually tried to return them just short of two weeks after i got them, but newegg basically told me to go die in a fire pit (they don't take returns).

The more I think about it right now, the more I think I should just go with the step up and hope the 980s will OC enough to match these. After 10 years of using only evga cards, you'd think this wouldn't be my first problem with one (well, two!) ;)
I can also probably sell the 780 Classified backplates I have them with ease if I go that route.

... "I think i might have gotten a good chip, its pretty cold at 1268mhz at stock voltage. Never goes above 65-69C in games and idles at around 30C and that is at about 78-80F. Now that my ambient temps are reaching the low 70s it idles near 25C. :P I am thinking of sticking it underwater. My step up days are done i cant step up anymore, i will be keeping this card and sticking it under water later on. I am upgrading to a Glacer 240L, which is expandable. Wish me luck!"

Me to. I am getting 110 fps in metro with 780ti sli 1254mhz oc. In unigene heaven its max temp is 80c only on top card. Bottom card is 72c. In game temps are 70c max. I need and new bios. ln2 bios wont disable boost feature which fluctuates the clock speed to much (to save power) and crashes the driver at 1280mhz at any voltage after about an hour of stress testing. Same happens at 1293, 1306, and 1320. Temps are good even at 1.212v in gpu z low 80'S .

Minor thread necromancy to say that I went ahead with the STEP UP which I was considering.

Got one of two today. Ran 3DMark. Scores for the base 980 ACX are all higher than my base 780 Ti Classified by about 4.5~10.5% (10.5% on Firestrike Ultra, 6% on Extreme, 4.5% on normal). Then I ran Assassin's Creed Unity (all settings maxed, AA disabled, vsnyc ). Where my 780 Ti Classified bounced between 40~55fps, the 980 seemed pretty intent on staying 50~60fps.

So I'm personally glad I went with the step up. The fact that the 980 ACX retails less than the 780 Ti Classified and the lesser fit and finish feels like a step down, but there is a performance increase, and that's what I was hoping for. Add in that it uses less power, I call it a win! :)

Could you post the scores? I HIGHLY doubt it, especially the base 980. I would have stepped up to a classified version but definitely not the super clocked or the base edition. I will be sticking this puppy underwater later this year. 780 Ti is still one of the flagship cards.

I also did the (x2) 980 ACX 2.0 step up from 2 780 Ti's in SLI:  I bit the bullet on Dec 9th, sent my cards on the 14th using UPS 2 day express.  EVGA received them on the 16th and they shipped them out on the 19th.  Because of the holiday season I received my cards on the 29th of Dec.    Here are my scores based on a CPU Overclock of 4.7 GHz @ 1.295 Core Voltage

I have to say for EVGA sending me the cheapest 980's that they sell for the step up in exchange for my 780 Ti SC ACX, I was not expecting much.  Both my 780 Ti's had an ASIC quality score in the mid 80's.  The 980's I have are 76% and 73%.  Surprisingly they overclock real well, not to mention very quiet and cool. I regretted it at first but then started to run a few numbers with tweaking and was caught off guard how well the base 980's ACX 2.0's performed.  Thanks EVGA for such an amazing program.

The only option available for step up from my 780 Ti's is the base 980's.  I underestimated how well they perform.

If I still had one of the Classifieds I'd post some in game benchmarks, but you'll just have to take my word for it.

LOL, I loaded up Watch Dogs. Only ran around the city for a couple of minutes, but it ran completely maxed out (including TXAA 4) on a single 980 @ 1920x1080. Couldn't do that with the 780 Ti Classified (or two of them for that matter.). Could probably easily provoke some fps drops with some high speed driving though.

Also loaded up Shadow of Mordor. I had fps drops with the 2 780 Ti Classifieds with the settings on ultra... In 5 minutes of playing I didn't notice a single drop. Maybe it was random luck. Maybe that extra gig of memory really makes a difference.

I'm actually considering just sticking the second 980 in my other computer that has 2 GTX 460 SCEE cards. I expected less than I got. Not even interested in messing with overclocking right now. Also, the ASIC is 75.8

I am waiting. I overclocked my 780ti's classifieds in sli to 1290mhz stable (UNIGENE HEAVEN STRESS TESTED)and am getting 100 plus fps min in metro last light redux(ULTRA SETTINGS IN 1440P). If you're actually BUYING [spending money on] a new card, I would agree. Maybe even skip the 980 Ti entirely if you have a 780 Ti. But the STEP UP program for me was basically free. Only had to pay for shipping. The total right there is about $20~$25 for both ways combined. Considering you only get 3 months to take advantage of the STEP UP, that doesn't leave people with the waiting option. I waited till the last possible day with hope, but my deadline was early December, so it was the 980s or keep my 780 Ti Classifieds.

Cool. I was going to do it also. But it wasnt much of advantage. I got my 780ti's for a good price and overclocked the bejesus out of them. With average fps at 110 in metro redux i have no reason. ..

I only took the step up from my 780 Ti for two reasons: 1 GB extra VRAM and quiet operation. Was not expecting much in performance but it did perform a tad bit better in the gameplay!

If my classifieds OCed I might have opted to keep them. The fact they wouldn't ended playing a big role in it. But I read a lot of framerate comparisons. The 980 seems to lead for highs and averages, but the 780 Ti Classified beats it when it comes to to the lows. But there's the results I'm seeing in Assassin's Creed Unity, Watch Dogs, Shadow of Mordor. New games crave memory, and the 980 has an extra gig, which was another reason I decided to go with the step up. I was surprised though that The Witcher 2 ran only around 50fps (with ubersampling enabled).

- Slightly higher benchmark scores (both 3DMark and ingame results) from various websites.
- 1gb more of memory, because recent games seem to need it (because devs are getting lazy)
- My 780 Ti Classifieds simply wouldn't OC.

Since you mention Metro...

I still have my classified sli score from Metro Last Light (not the redux version).
•Average Framerate: 72.00
•Max. Framerate: 198.29
•Min. Framerate: 17.92

and here's the score I got for a single 980. I can pull the SLI score when I get the second card.
•Average Framerate: 48.00
•Max. Framerate: 109.12
•Min. Framerate: 11.42

From those numbers, it looks like your second 980 will scale up close to or above 780ti's in sli. What resolution tho?

1920x1080/60 monitor, so there's your answer on the resolution. Never saw the need (personally) for higher or multi display setups (although I do think they're cool). Hopefully EVGA will send the card out Tuesday or Wednesday, as they don't reopen till Monday, and I'm sure they'll be swamped.

EDIT: I also have benchmark results from my SLI 780 Ti Classifieds for... Tomb Raider, Hitman Absolution, and Thief. I'll be sure to get results on the 980s for those as well.

There is a benchmark .exe program in the Metro folder. Create a new benchmark, run max settings at 1080p. I run at a higher res but I wanted to give you a baseline as many people think the low end 980's do not amount to much difference to the 780ti.

Well, my second card is on its way. I'll update my benchmark results next week when it arrives. As of current though, I have no regrets about using the step up program to go from the 780 Ti Classified to a 980.

Re: Should i jump the gun and step up to a 980 from a 780 Ti? 2015/01/13 14:06:34 (permalink)
Second card arrived. Here's the scores. These are all base clock scores.

3DMark
Fire Strike Ultra (980 ACX SLI) - http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/5508577
Fire Strike Extreme (980 ACX SLI) - http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/5508639

Fire Strike (980 ACX SLI)http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/5508688
Fire Strike (780 Ti Classified SLI)http://www.3dmark.com/fs/3434551

Notes: The 980 SLI score beats the 780 Ti Classified score 3DMark by 3.12%. Don't let that fool you into thinking your in game results will only be 3% better though. Let's see what happens!

Metro LL Benchmark
DX11, 1920x1080, Quality: Very High, Texture Filtering: AF 16X, Motion Blur: Low, SSAA: On, Tesselation: Very High, PhysX: On
980 ACX SLI
•Average Framerate: 80.61
•Max. Framerate: 285.55
•Min. Framerate: 9.80

780 Ti Classified SLI
•Average Framerate: 72.00
•Max. Framerate: 198.29
•Min. Framerate: 17.92

Notes: The 980 like most benchmarks I saw from reviewer websites shows average and max numbers being higher than the 780 Ti while the minimum numbers are lower. This seems to confirm that, but other scores may be different.

Thief
(max settings)
980 ACX SLI
Min: 71.8
Max: 167.5
Avg: 122.9

780 Ti Classified SLI
Min: 51.2
Max: 142.9
Avg: 90.1

Notes: The 980 kicks 780 Ti Classified combo in the teeth and takes a portion of its lunch money.

Tomb Raider
(max settings)
980 ACX SLI
Min: 79.8
Max: 142
Avg: 111.1

980 ACX (single card)
Min: 40.8
Max: 74
Avg: 58.5

780 Ti Classified SLI
Min: 77.8
Max: 144
Avg: 106.8

Notes: Here's a case of where things are mostly even. The 980 ACX cards barely beat the 780 Ti Classifieds I had. The 780 Ti duo also had an ever so slightly higher max fps. A whole 2 fps! ... Wow! /sarcasm

Hitman: Absolution
(max settings)
980 ACX SLI
Min: 88
Max: 150
Avg: 105

780 Ti Classified SLI
Min: 74
Max: 128.4
Avg: 89.9

Notes: The 980 wins again. The rest of that lunch money is now gone.

While Assassin's Creed Unity has no in game benchmark, that can't stop one from using fraps. This is strictly the 980 vs 980 SLI.
980 ACX
Avg: 42.717
Min: 35
Max: 55

980 ACX SLI
Avg: 71.157
Min: 22
Max: 98

Notes: SLI introduced flickering on puddles on the ground and on the edges of rooftops. FAIL UBISOFT! FAIL!!!!!  I never ran a benchmark score with my classifieds, but I know for a fact I was never able to run the game maxed out with AA. It would run 30~40fps, and stutter every few seconds. With the 780 Ti Classifieds I managed to make ACU run at 1920x1080 @50fps, ultra settings, AA disabled, which was how I managed to make Watch Dogs run. The results I posted above however are 1920x1080 @60fps, ultra settings, TXAA enabled. With the single card, despite those numbers, it never felt choppy. Like ACU, Watch Dogs also runs just fine completely maxed out (including AA) on a single 980. On that note, a single 980 is enough for ACU, especially considering the flickering. F A I L !

Here's a few other scores I ran today if any of you with a 780 Ti Classified want to compare.
Bioshock Infinite with a single card had an average fps of 111.85, while SLI had a result of 153.79.
Sleeping Dogs Definitive Edition with a single card ran an avg of 57.7, SLI had a result of 105.8
Shadow of Mordor with a single 980 had an avg fps of 87.45, SLI pulled a 134.15 average fps.

I've yet to decide if I want to put the second 980 in my other computer which has the 2 GTX 460 cards. Or sell 460 cards, the 780 Classified backplates I still have, and dump the return into picking up a 980 Ti for it when they're available. I'm in no rush!

Re: Should i jump the gun and step up to a 980 from a 780 Ti? 2015/01/13 14:36:08 (permalink)
So...
- I'm able to run games maxed out with a single GTX 980 that sadly 2 GTX 780 Ti Classifieds couldn't handle (Watch Dogs and Assassin's Creed Unity in particular here...).
- Judging from the results, I personally feel I'm getting about a 10% to 20% performance gain.
- I'm using less electricity.
- My EVGA bridge still works.

EDIT: 1/14/2015

Decided to try overclocking them. Only playing with a 230mhz oc on the core and 211mhz on the memory (one of a few different settings that came up with google.)

Fire Strike Ultra @ 6622http://www.3dmark.com/fs/3798300
Fire Strike @ 22,400http://www.3dmark.com/fs/3798352

Metro LL Benchmark
•Average Framerate: 87.00
•Max. Framerate: 230.15
•Min. Framerate: 10.22

Tomb Raider
Min: 90
Max: 169.3
Avg: 129.5

ASIC on these 2 cards btw is 75.8 and 76.2

Knowing what I know now... I would regret it if I didn't use the Step Up. My 780 Ti Classifieds simply refused to OC and ran over 80C at base settings until I took control of the fans (my 980s haven't poke over 60C yet with my fan settings). Add in that I can now run Ubitrash games (Watch Dogs and Assassin's Creed Unity) completely maxed out at 1920x1080/60 with full AA. Zero stuttering in Shadow of Mordor. Seeing as how I can overclock my 980s, the gains are even higher now.
I loved my 780 Ti Classifieds while I had them, but recent games have become absurdly demanding. For now, I'm keeping them together with my 5960X computer. I may go with a 980 Ti for my older i7 930 system that has the 2 GTX 460 cards whenever they become available. One will do the job for that pc. One 980 would technically do it.

And thanks to EVGA for the Step Up program! For 10 years I've exclusively used only EVGA video cards (starting with a 6800 Ultra), but never once did I use the Step Up. Didn't even know it existed until a few months ago. Always been pleased with my EVGA cards, and the step up program is now another reason I'll continue to stick with EVGA.
