Hi guys,

I currently have a Razer Diamondback (the original one, not the 3G one), which has been a fantastic mouse.  I'd like to transfer it onto my new PC, but according to Razer the drivers don't work with Windows 8 (only 7 and XP).  Assuming that this is actually correct (and not "it doesn't say it works with 8.1, so we'll say no"), that means I'm looking for a new mouse ...

So, can anyone suggest a decent mouse? My criteria are:
  • Similar in shape to the original IntelliMouse (pic), or Razer Diamondback (pic).  I've tried the current IntelliMouse 4500, and it's uncomfortable, being too short (length-wise), and too tall (height-wise), as well as being light, and feeling cheap.  The reason my Diamondback feels comfortable is it "feels" low (it's only marginally lower than the IntelliMouse 4500, but it is longer), and the long buttons mean my fingers rest easily on them.
  • 3 or 5 buttons.  I have no need for buttons beyond left/right, scroll-wheel, and possibly forward/back.
  • Variable sensitivity.  My Razer's sensitivity is generally set around 4/10, but I do alter it when doing complex retouching.
  • Understated.  Lit up scroll-wheel's about the limit of "acceptable bling".
  • No silly requirements for internet connection, etc.
I'm going to be using it primarily for photo editing, with a secondary use of gaming (mainly RTS).

Mice I've thought about are: Cooler Master Alcor/Mizar, Corsair M3/M30, Mionix Avior, Razer Death Adder/Abyssus/Imperator, and Steel Series Sensei.

Looking at the Amazon customer reviews, there's a fair few complaining about the build quality of the Cooler Master (buttons die) and Corsair (scroll wheel dies) mice.  I've also heard that Razer's current driver software requires an internet connection, as it attempts to get/send personal profiles "to the cloud" (optional is fine, requires is not).

Any ideas/thoughts?

Thanks!

P.S. I do have a stash of ~5 of the old (beige) Intelli mice I rescued from the WEE pile at work, but I'd rather have a new one...

I would recommend a good one from Logitech or the EVGA TORQ.

The evga one has some impressive specs, and if you're anything like me it will last you a lifetime.
The evga one also looks friggin' sweet.

Otherwise, Logitech are a great brand.

Honestly the greatest gaming mouse I've ever used is my R.A.T. 7 from Madcatz. Don't let the manufacturer name fool you, this is one amazing human interface device! It's completely customizable, including length, width, height, and weight... as well as having various other adjustment points.

It also has interchangeable parts to further customize the ergonomics, most notably the pinky tray which you rest your unused fingers on, preventing you from "dragging" your pinky finger on the mouse surface. Add in a near infinite number of DPI permutations, etc and it's one amazing device (IMO).

They also make a wireless (RAT 9) version as well as MMO versions. I've not used any of those though but the same basic design concept is there.

Oh and this thing is SOLID. From the braided cable down to its all metal frame. Hell, you could probably use this as a mace in case of emergency! And I bet it would still work after lol.

BTW, and mine is going on 4 years old now. No issues what so ever... and the drivers seems to get updates on a semi regular basis. I've taken this from Vista to 7 to Windows 8.1 without issue.

Edit: I forgot to add one of the cooler features. A "percision" button. Basically, when depressed, the button (easily accessable by your thumb) cuts the mouse resolution to a user defined level in order to get finer control. Comes in handy if you're doing detail work in PS or trying to snipe in a FPS.

Logitech G502 as it is using an Optical sensor instead of laser sensor which means the mouse has no acceleration at all.

the Build quality is also really good.

I have the Razer Death Adder and Steel Series Sensei Raw. I prefer the Sensei but the Death Adder is good too. I have no experience with any other current mouses.

I would recommend checking out Logitech mice. Logitech makes good quality mice and have a hassle free RMA service if you ever have any issues. Logitech will cover shipping both ways on all RMA's.

I just switched from a Logitech G9 to a Logitech G502. The sensitivity is insane... It's going to take some time to get used to it.

Just sent back my G502 mouse... It was a little too light for me... and the button placement was really annoying for my play style. Just purchased a Corsair Raptor M45 instead... We'll see how it works out.
