huh, While it is true norton and all AVs cant block all virus, no one assumed they could.
    IDK
It sounds like they are using bad logic, like "condoms dont stop viruses, so why use them to stop the spread of STI/STDs?"
well because they sure as hell limit the amount of the virus that do exchange thats why.
    Same thing with AV software.

Its amazing how people who say use common sense, have no common sense, or at least no basic knowledge if internet safety.

Starsmine, just because you have AV software Premium or Free, it doesn't mean you are protected from today's threats.

Common sense and safe browsing habits, go a lot further than Norton, McAfee, Kaspersky can on their own.

People who use common sense in their browsing and downloading habits, generally use malwarebytes and have clean PC's for the most part. Usually they also install a free AV software just to have it.

If you feel more comfortable with paying for Norton or any other Premium AV software that's great.

However if you have no common sense while browsing, that paid AV software will stop none of today's active and nasty threats at all.

Honestly, they won't even alert you that you have a virus. It's that bad.

I dont care if the software is premium on not, running around the internet with no AV is beyond stupid.
I dont care how smart you are with computers, but there are two things stopping the common sense attitude from working, the tricks to not getting virus have two problems

1, they are not common sense fixes, what normal guy thinks I should run a javascript blocker?
    2. You loose a stupid amount of functionality when running javascript blockers
    3. No mater how safe you are on the internet, you WILL get a virus, its not a case of if, its a case of when.
    4. The reasoning behind not using AVs is flawed, has been for the past 7 years now. AVs do not slow down your system, nor do they get in your way of using the computer.
    5. If they have the knowledge required to prevent getting virus with "common sense" that they claim to have, they would recognize the huge problem in their browsing habits.
    6. Virus are discrete, Many of the time you wont recognize you have one without the assistance of another program
    7. All of the good AV programes alert of a virus, yes you need to scan your computer still, but most of them will be caught with the active scan rather then the scheduled one.

Well according to the previous post about the "best AVs" Bitdefender is one of the "best"

I can tell you, the Active Scan, and the Scheduled one, as well as a manual full scan, will not detect the viruses that I see.

It's almost as if they had no security at all.

This is what this article is getting at, the current AV offerings are not as effective as their predecessors were at detecting and removing viruses.

The article goes on to talk about damage control rather than prevention now, because, as you said, most people WILL get a virus it's just a matter of time.

The article makes sense, because antivirus software in general is dying, because they don't stop anything.

Just because its less effective at preventing them does not mean you stop using them

condoms are only actually effective verses bacterial STDs, Virus like HIV, not so much, but only a fool would not wear one, they still limit the number of viruses.
Take AVs off your computer, the maker does not even have to try to get around that.

    A follow up...

I had a client with Norton 360 with plans for another license (two days ago). With some research, Norton has combined all of their products into one: Norton Security 2.0 (5-user license) for a $59.99 promotion. It is $20 off for a limited time. This product came out in September.

They will also transfer your remaining time on your previous product over.

Surf in a sandbox environment, same goes for emails and downloads, use common sense and don't go do stupid things and interact with strange things. I use a separate Linux box on an encrypted VPN network and use zero anti-virus. On my Windows side used only for gaming these days I use Bitdefender and Adblock knowing nothing on that side is not safe 100% and I am fine with that. Everything important to me is backed up and off-line. You can't trust someone or something else 100% for protection.

Not really, no. The virus is smaller then the "mesh" of the latex.

    From CDC:
When used correctly and consistently, condoms are highly effective in preventing HIV infection.
Condoms are also effective at preventing sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) transmitted through body fluids, like gonorrhea, chlamydia, and HIV. However, they provide less protection against STDs spread through skin-to-skin contact like human papillomavirus (genital warts), genital herpes, and syphilis.

What about this New Virus Trojan.Powelik that started on August 3, 2014 that evidently enters your System by attaching itself to the "Official Microsoft Updates" thus Bypassing the Norton Antivirus All together and then is able to take control of you files and also erase binary information?

My Neighbor caught this Trojan and it Slowed EVERYTHING to a Crawl until he used the Symantec Removal Software that was available and DID Remove those Trojan.Powelik files and is running Great Now!

Just goes to show you even WITH Virus protection software, You are still Not Safe from ALL Viruses.

Of course. The detection rate with any AV will never be 100% but having a reputable one gives you good piece of mind. What typical consumer really wants to play Russian roulette and play in a very little sandbox?

I'm a very aware web surfer but time to time Norton identifies and blocks malicious scripts. I would never surf without Internet AV protection, personally.
