I have been using Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes. Many other people here use the same combination. Haven't bothered with buying a sub to an antivirus in over 4 years. If you ask me it is kind of pointless.

I always used AVG free until I got the paid version last year for $20 with a $20 rebate = still free. I have tried them all and I find that AVG is less of a resource hog than any of them and doesn't bog my PC down when gaming. I also have the option to remove 'Tracking Cookies' which is nice since I really, really hate tracking cookies. I really have tried every trial version out there and I always come back to AVG. Here is a list of trial versions from Microsoft if you want to shop around but beware that you will get SPAM from every company from now until the stars burn out. LOL I have unsubscribed from their notifications again and again but they're still coming. http://windows.microsoft....s-partners#AVtabs=win7

I have never purchased a subscription (10+ years). I have always found awesome free services like AVG, Microsoft Security Essentials, Malwarebytes, SUPERAntiSpyware, etc... I'm currently using avast! Free Antivirus on my PC's and avast! Free Mobile Security on my mobile devices. Having to register/renew a free service like this doesn't bother me. I need remote control for the mobile features anyway.

I did the same with AVG Internet Security. I used if for a long time...then tried both Bitdefender and Kaspersky. Found both B and K were very intrusive and often conflicted with some of my everyday software like Nero, and a few others. They would not let the app cache to the HDD and then to the burner. Every burn failed. Went back to AVG and all is well with the world. I also have a lifetime subscription to Malwarebytes Pro. Set up properly, AVG and Malwarebytes Pro do a great job. Right now, you can get a two year subscription to AVG Internet Security for $25 from Newegg...download. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832620102&nm_mc=EMC-IGNEFL123113&cm_mmc=EMC-IGNEFL123113-_-EMC-123113-Latest-_-DownloadableSecurityUtilities-_-32620102-L09B Use the code and save

MSE is free but also has the worst rating of any other AV/AS program. I tried it for a while then dumped it for AVG. Using a program with a rating as low as MSE makes me nervous.

MSE was good when it first got off the ground, but it's slowly become less and less capable of detecting malware. I've found many instances recently where MSE has been disabled by the malware, which is not exactly confidence inspiring in your antivirus. I've also seen many instances where MSE has not found anything, but running a scan with MBAM and detecting an infection will suddenly trigger MSE to find the same infection. It almost seems like MSE is riding on the coattails of other scanners. I've started recommending avast! to most people.

I use MSE now because it's free but the best rated antivirus/internet security program appears to be Kaspersky. I might have to buy a license.
