My two 670's have been work horses for a long time, game great and do some major damage when Crunching is available for GPU's.

I decided I needed to upgrade and had my eye on a EVGA 970... unfortunately they sold out at the company store yesterday afternoon and I'm depressed.  I ordered a backplate for it!  I was going to love it and squeeze it and hug it and kiss it.  Apparently not.  Nope let down by the lack of product.

Then I saw this EVGA 980 ACX 2.0 this morning, still in stock.

No longer bummed and guess what I'll be crunching with next week.  Yup... and at the end of the month, I'll add a matching one for games and crunching.

I just started crunching an EVGA 970 and will give it an extra hug for you.

I have a feeling your 980 (or two ) will easily fill the void of the missed 970.

    What are games?!?!

Games are those things that steal your hardware from valuable crunching time.

    Awesome!
Put that thing to good use.

I ordered another MSI TF 7950 (same as the one I have currently), hopefully it doesn't die within a week or two like those xfx one's.

Edit: And... I just bought a third 7950, this time a sapphire one. I hope it works well.

So there is an upside to your being bummed out. You get the better card(s) so you can crunch and game.
Speaking of games - I got so caught up in gaming my wife would bang on the computer room door and say --
"Do you have any idea what time it is?" and I really had no idea it was 5am.
So reality set in - I was a junkie - walked away cold turkey and made my gamer a folder - that's my story and i am stickin' to it. (BF 2142)
I still fly the flight sims on occasion but the pc's are folding and now crunching.
Color me green with envy on your new card(s)!

yepper - you have a bit more freedom to be as weird as you want
But it should be obvious at this point, I have some room in that arena.

I get what you are saying. The nice thing now is - even here in Florida (panhandle) it is cold enough to lower my temps on the graphic cards. I posted the temps (with a pic) earlier in the summer and I was running the cards full throttle (102 degrees F outside) on air.
Probably explains why folding @ home numbers are way up for EVGA lately.

Congrats Viper!  You made the right choice!  I picked up my 980 a couple weeks ago and I'm lovin' it!  Especially when I take the time to fire up a very heavily modded version of Skyrim or Shadow of Mordor!   Surprisingly, the 980 is still a little bit slower than my 570s when crunching Milkyway, but still twice as fast as the 680 it replaced.

I came home from work on Wednesday to find my gaming rig turned off.  A quick bit of testing and determined that my PSU totally gave up.  It's only three years old and still under warranty.  I RMA'd it but still hit Amazon for a new EVGA 1000W G2.  Just got it installed and crunching away!

Then I got to the last part, and I was glad...

    Congrats on the new hardware!

So separate question - along the same topic.  I need a new card and I have two options.

    1 x 980 or 2 x 970's?

Which would be better. I can only have air cooled and prefer ACX 2.0 equipped cards.  I have some bucks burning a hole in my pocket.

Just a quick read of the EVGA Forums 900 series video card sub forum says, two 970s generally beat one 980.  Can't say the same for two 980's of course.  That's concerning benchmarks and SLI performance of course.

Mileage varies while crunching and folding...

2.0 is good... backplates come in today, so I'll mount it on the one I have now.  Day after the Turkey feast, Newegg gets an order for #2... so yeah.  2.0 Drooling Factor.

Heh, it is a well known fact, that without backplates the card is way too ugly to function to its greatest potential...
I have them on all of my EVGA GPUs...

I think primae noctis applies here whereby senior Crunchers are supposed to have the right to break-in that new card for ya Viper.  Of course they would return it to you once a proper amount of testing was administered.

Very nice Viper, good luck with it.
What does the back-plate do, or is it used for?

Not quite all bling.  It's like a second PCB that bolts onto the back of the card. It does make it look pretty, but they also re-inforce the card to stop the sagging/bending that occurs over time.
