it seams to be official. Anyone know when we can expect these? i'll definitely make the jump from my 780ti classy after seeing how far cry 4 maxes out my 3 gb easily.  i knew this would happen but everyone kept swearing up and down that 3gb would be enough. if i coould rewind ida just bought the titan black :(

So anyone know when we can expect to see the 8gb 980's to hit the shelves?

It will seem official when the full release is announced, but until then, it is speculation.  The rumor mill is the best place your info, or one of the other threads that have been around with this rumor for over a month now.

I think they will not launch 8GB with 256bit.
GTX980 is only bridge for gap waiting Radeon answer.
NVIDIA win with GTX780Ti - full GK110 and no is time on AMD.
GTX980 is offer between and will become mid range for fight with successor of R9-270 and R9-285.
Now we wait AMD Line and NVIDIA higher class with more than 4GB memory.
Probably 6GB and 12GB in 2016. But maybe special version of GK110 successor with 12GB show up.

I think NVIDIA minds are turned in other direction, how to divert attention of gamers from HBM improvements over GDDRP5 and present something similar not to build more expensive mid range cards.

No offense but i cannot understand your english.

I really hope they do release the 8gb cards because with games like shadow of mordor with its uhd texture pack taking up 6gb and with far cry surpassing 4gb easily wen its available, now gta 5 is coming to pc in january and i gaurentee it will definatly utilize more than 3gb and most likely more than 4gb. 8gb makes a lot of sense.

I wish one of the people who told me 3gb is more than enough could join this thread and eat their words. Next time im just gonna listen to my gut. I would have a titan black if i trusted myself.

Was about to order the 980 myself, but now that people are saying 8GB models might come out, don't know if I should wait and order when it comes out, or try my luck with the step up program...

What I believe the previous forum member's response (post number 3) meant if I understand it correctly is that he believes based on the memory bandwidth (based on 256bit memory bus) wouldn't be a valid solution for an NVIDIA card whereby an AMD has a larger memory bus.

I also agree that with the new 9xx series cards , with the bus bandwidth they have - it wouldn't help for them to have 8 gig versions .... BUT that being said,  that doesn't mean Nvidia cares either way, as long as they can convince people to buy them .

So that means - IMHO - if Nvidia can make money on it, they'll make them.  Are they necessary ?, or could the cards architecture handle 8 gigs efficiently ?  = no

Probably not...if so then most likely will be a gtx980ti or gtx990 with the hope that it will be 384 bit

My hunch is the 8GB models will be only on the "Big Daddy" Maxwell GPUs - most likely to be released in March 2015.

The Titan II (or 'X') will be the flagship GPU for the Maxwell behemoth.

From one of the staff members over at Overclockers.co.uk who speaks with manufacturers directly.  Reliable source in my opinion.
He could of been told they won't be released any time soon and Nvidia et all may have changed there plans.

For 1500 you may as well get 2 980 classys and pity poor Titan owners.

No one has ever lied about their product.. since the R9 295X2 is a faster Dual GPU card.. I am not even a fan of AMD, but the tests don't lie, and it is nearly $500-600 cheaper.

All you really have to do is look at what a Titan Z really is. It is 2 low clocked GK110s with 6gb ram a piece. Here is a reveiw of it getting slaughtered by a 295X2 and a 780ti SLI set up.

I believe all the following are true but of course I have no proof.

    1 - 8 gig cards are inevitable.
2 - Nvidia will not pre announce release dates as this devalues existing cards on sale.
3 - The spec of pc gaming for AAA titles is changed defenitly now, people keep saying games like AC unity, watchdog's etc. are not optimised for pc, yet dragon age inquisitions and far cry 4 also need high spec'd GPU's just for 1080p never mind 4k.

My purchase of the gtx 760 just a few months back I have had to grin and bear it, wrong decision was made, 970 looks like will just about be enough for me and I only game at 1050p.

Relsale value of my gtx 760 is now also probably half of what it could have been due to how good the 970 is and only priced about 25% above old 760 price.

"GeForce GTX TITAN Z is a gaming monster, built to power the most extreme gaming rigs on the planet. With a massive 5760 cores, 12 GB of 7 Gbps GDDR5 memory, and the most advanced power delivery system, GTX TITAN Z offers truly insane performance. It's easily the fastest graphics card we've ever made."

No one has ever lied about their product.. since the R9 295X2 is a faster Dual GPU card.. I am not even a fan of AMD, but the tests don't lie, and it is nearly $500-600 cheaper.

True, I never said it was, I just posted in reference to the  " not even ment for gaming" posted above
