A bit of a note on Windows 10 Preview. It has neither WDDM 2.0 nor DirectX 12.0 in yet. Also it has extensive logging going back to Microsoft tracking it's use. I would not recommend Windows 10 Preview in a home use environment.

Yes you should not use it in a home environment if you don't know what to expect from a tech preview (beta).

As time moves on more MS builds will be forthcoming and eventually DX12 will be on board.

I liked 7 better overall. Mainly because it was built for PC's only. All the tablet features have bloated the OS IMO. Windows 8.1 is very stable for me though.

you do know that windows 8.1  uses less HDD space then windows 7  despite the  Modern   UI interface right.    also have ya tested or tried windows 10 out

LOL, you do know that SSD space is no longer an issue? Let alone HDD space.

Windows 8 does take some getting used to, but it really is supremely efficient.
Windows 7 is too resource heavy for consideration.

and yet Microsoft  has made each version of windows  after windows 7 use less and less HDD space  and  windows  10 TP already reduces the installation size  by a couple of gigs over windows 8.1   it is just a fact that windows 8.1  is not bloated like you think because of the Modern UI stuff   because of that  you assumed 8.1   was bloat bloat bloat yet it uses less  spacer to install  yet has more features

No i am telling you we can  have   10Tb  of HDD space or  1TB SSDs  yet windows  is still gonna shrink in size   . you stated   that   (you do know that SSD space is no longer an issue? Let alone HDD space. )...                   As if when installing  windows 8.1 or windows  10  people just chose to install the minimum amount  to save on space when by default windows 8.1 and 10 use gfar less HDd space regardless if  Space issues are  irreverent now days .  you can install windows 8.1 or windows 10  on a 16gb SSd and still have  a good amount of space left over to use   without any features  missing because of  the  lower amount of space you have for install.

Re: Windows or 8.1 for gaming? 2014/11/09 10:01:22 (permalink)
So I found this thread a few weeks back and it interested me because I was getting ready to do a new build and wan't sure if I wanted to have a 8.1 only machine or do a dual boot with win 7. I had never tried 8 or 8.1, didn't know what to expect or how it would do in gaming. Well the build is done and I decided on a 8.1 only build...no regrets. Have no idea why some are so negative towards 8.1? After a few days of getting familiar with it and Googling some things I couldn't find or figure out I'm now pretty comfortable with it like it quite a bit. Thought about trying Start8 or classic shell or startisback but frankly I don't feel I really need it. Gaming is great so far (BFBC2, BF4, ArmA 3, etc), super fast start up and so on.

8.1 is a green-light-go, in my opinion, for those of you who are still holding out or unsure.

Yep I have to agree.  I've had exactly one problem so far and that's my joystick dropping out when MS FSX loses focus.  (usb suspend/etc. all disabled)  The FSUIPC utility addon for it can be used for joystick control in the paid version though which I have and it fixed it just fine........so far......no more dropouts.  It was kind of shocking the other day when I realized my windows partition (windows, drivers, stuff that won't give you an install location option, my docs, outlook pst) is only 42GB.  Win7 was 60+ (Pro version of both 7 & 8 compared).
