Hey all,
I had some pretty bad artifacting in game, BF4, last night and then the blank screen shortly after that started. Unfortunately, I can't post pics until this evening but my question is what causes artifacts? Is it driver related, hardware, etc.
I run the 780HC at stock speeds and voltages, same for the cpu and DDR3 in my system.
I have made no changes to drivers, the OS, or anything in the system for about 9 months now.

I'm just curious if others have experienced this and what the cause was and the solution. Thanks in advance.

Oh,  system specs:
Asus Z87 Deluxe MB
Intel 4770K stock speeds, voltages, 3.5-3.9 @ 1.09-1.15v
G. Skill DDR3 2400Mhz@ 1.655v
Samsung Pro 840 SSD 256GB
Asus Xonar Essence STX sound card
Cooler Master V1000 PSU
Acer 27" 1080P monitor, 120hz
Win 8.1

Lots of things can cause artifacts... driver bugs, game bugs, defective gpu, defective vram, etc. Do you notice any artifacts in other games/applications? You may want to run Unigine Heaven 4.0 & Unigine Valley to look for artifacts.

Yeah, I wasn't sure which is why I asked but it seemed odd with no problems prior to this with the same drivers. Then again, this was BF4 so it might just be game related to that title. I'll run Unigine Heaven 4.0 & Unigine Valley to look for artifacts tonight and report back. Thanks for the reply Sajin. You're always very helpful!

So, I ran Unigine Heaven twice. The first time it crashed reporting driver error 1/3 the way through. The second time no crashes, no artifacting. I'm leaning towards driver or BF4 itself now.

More testing needs to be done. Failing once and passing another tells me something isn't 100%.

Yeah, I just ran Heaven again and it completed, but with artifacting around 22/26 in the testing. Now I don't know what to think.

Try downclocking your cards core & memory -105 from default clocks and retest a few times.

Downclocking -105 and running it twice finished with no visible errors and no artifacting. Some scenes seemed overlayed with noticeable shadows like a flag waving that had a gray area the size of the flag that extended about twice as long as the flag itself. IDK what that might mean other than it looked kind of weird.

Sounds like your card is starting to have a problem. You can rerun the tests at stock clocks & downclocked a few more times to verify the card is artifacting, the artifacts should come back every time you run the card at stock clocks and go away when running downclocked.

Oh, per EVGA tech suggestions I checked the 12V in bios, running at 12.3v no fluctuations, but that's just at an idle. Also ran memtest with no errors. I forgot to mention that the RAM is at XMP profile speeds and voltages of 2400mhz 11-13-13-31 1.65v. All the cables from the PSU and GPU are seated securely as well as the GPU itself.

Now players don't show up in game...is this a driver problem, maybe time to install the newer version or maybe corrupt driver on my system? I uninstalled the driver, re-installed the same one 337.88, and had this happen now.

I went ahead and did a clean install of the new drivers 344.48, and tested them in BF4 for about 10 minutes. I only installed the driver and the physix, clean install, and all the visuals are back with no artifacting or other glitches. I'll go ahead and try these again tomorrow for a longer period of time and see if that's resolved the problem. As a bonus I'm getting 25fps faster in BF4 than before. I'll test them more tomorrow, as I don't have any more time for that today.

Gotta love hunting down the issue. Report back when you can.
