The price is right. Besides, I need a heater this winter.

Doesn't AMD typically launch new cards on October and January? Maybe they're clearing out old stock?

ON my AMD rig, I'm still keeping to ASUS R9 280X Matrix though because of the 6-port configuration. If I could find a R9 290X with 6-port I'd get that. I don't see them available though.

Let's hope that with the next die shrink heat will be less of a problem for AMD

Its already been stated that AMD is not enforcing any price changes. In their minds a 290x is worth the price over the 980 because of their great support and mantle. Any changes will at the retailers level. So AMD isnt feeling the pressure, or at least isnt showing it. Though their retailers are showing their true feelings.

Notice how I didn't say anything about AMD?

Not you but others are saying how amd feels pressure and how they are just trying to get rid of stock. I dont think thats the case.

Ditto, altho in the right games it can be quite the noise maker. Sounds like someone if vacuuming in my room when I am playing. But if you dont mind that its a freaking steal for 300, plus you get some new games for that 300 too! Even the XFX double dissapation card is on sale for 349 and a $20 rebate with a couple free games.

But isnt the 970 beat the the 290x in almost every category such as benchmarks, gaming, electric useage, heat and noise for only 20 bucks more? I guess if the 290x has a game deal that you really want or you want mantle the 290x might be a better choice.

I'm glad because of people who no money for 1000$ cards every year.
Only they need to immediately expect 100$ for cooler more.
Without that gaming is not possible on reference design.

It comes down to what you are using it for. In gaming the 970 marginally beats the 290x while using less power, but the 290x utterly destroys the 970 in terms of computing & they use roughly the same amount of power doing so.

So, since I like to game & compute, the 290x is a better choice for me.

at that price its almost worth paring with a PentiumD 940 and run in a constant loop of benchmarks, so you dont need a heater this winter

Looks like i'll be able to snag a second R9 290X soon. I've all ready seen a few used ones getting in the low 200's on craigslist. Love my card, reference design... set the fan to make sure I don't go pass 70C under load. Never have any issues.
