So I recently picked up EVGA 980 SC and card is excellent as coming from trisli 680ftw this single card is a beast. I will get another to SLI once I save more cash but only issue I have is with having 3 monitors connected to the card will idle at 1240mhz clock with 0 load. I found out by lowering refresh rate on monitors from 144 to 120 and card then started downclocking to very low clock. Is there others in this forum with same issue? I have seen other forums on Linustechtips and Hard Forum with users having same issue. Anyone also from @EVGA aware of this by chance?

Evidently, this has been an issue for sometime and one I discovered when I decided to add a second monitor while having a 144Hz display as my main. Alone, having a single display at 144Hz, the GPU will properly downclock when idle. However, if you have more than one display and at least one of the displays are at a 144Hz refresh, then the GPU will keep a constant "high" idle core and memory clock speed. As you discovered, if you set the refresh to 120Hz, the GPU will then go back to idling normally.

I believe EVGA is aware of this since I saw EVGA_JacobF post in the thread that I discovered on Overclock.net regarding this issue. As I can't post links yet, the thread is easy enough to find if you search for "144Hz causes ridiculously high idle temps".

My work around was to keep the refresh setting at 120Hz and then through NVIDIA Control Panel, individually set the preferred refresh rate for various games to "Highest available" in the 3D settings section. Seems to work when testing it out on BF4 and Tomb Raider thus far.

For reference, I have a GTX980 driving a Benq XL2720Z and a really old Samsung 19" 4:3 display. Even when the GPU was idling high under the 144Hz setting, my temps only hit 33c with a core clock of 911MHz and a maxed out memory clock.

144hz pulls a lot of GPU resources at idle. 120hz will downclock significantly from there. It's just the nature of the display option.

It's likely related to the old Fermi multi-monitor idle clock "bug". According to nvidia the issue was display buffers not keeping up with lower memory clocks properly and claimed it required hardware fixes (which came in fermi-mobile and kepler). If someone with a gsync 144hz monitor can check if the error exists with that as well it might help spot where the issue is.

On my system with a 144Hz display and Gsync, my GPU idles higher than the default 324Mhz idle speed.  Not up at full load speeds, but a step or two above idle.  This happens even with only the one display connected to the GPU.  If I lower the refresh rate to 120Hz or lower, the GPU idle's at 324Mhz again.

I can confirm that this is happening to me too. Triple monitors and idles at 999Mhz when nothing is open. Open a browser and it goes to 1240Mhz.

Thanks for all replies guys! I just find it odd as when I had EVGA GTX 590, Tri Sli 680s FTW cards and had multiple monitors that it never happened before till I got this card. I found work around using Nvidia Inspector and enabling Multimonitor Power Saver and it drops card to 135mhz so at least I can use that as a work around. Do you think its something they will fix down the road?

btw that is very pimp racing setup with the triple monitors you got! ive had those asus vg248qe's since april 2013 and they are just damn perfect.
