First off, this is my first post

As a stated in the title, I can't seem to find out why my system is so noisy. From the second I hit the power button, it sounds like my laptop on full load! I thought  it was the GPU, but after downloading EVGA's GPU fan control software, it turns out it was not the GPU.

My system specs:
CPU: AMD FX6300
CPU Cooler: Stock cooler
MB: Asus M5A97 R2.0
GPU: Evga GTX-650
HDD: WD Blue 1TB 7200RPM
SSD: I wish
Fans: 2 intake, 1 exhaust
PSU: Corsair CX500
DVD: Getting soon
Case: Corsair Spec 02

CPU Cooler: Stock cooler <-- This is your problem, trust me. Go pick up a Cooler master Hyper 212 evo (a very good bang for the buck cpu cooler). It should quiet it down a lot.

Amazon has got 'em for $33. Is that a good price? Is there anyway to test for sure if it is the CPU fan? Because I know stock fans are usually junk, but this much of a racket just immediately after hitting the power button?

Try changing the fan speed in the bios, it could be pegged at 100% speed by default.

Well, I have turbo, silent, standard, and user settings. The Asus software reports it is running at 27%.

Welcome to the forums..It's probably the case fans and/or CPU cooler fan like Tucker said..You can hold the fans with your finger or something or momentarily unplug them to see which one(s) are noisey..The Chasis/CPU fanspeeds can be customized in the BIOS..You can do it EZ Mode, or Advanced Mode for more advanced fanspeed options using Q-Fan Control..Even Q-Fan is rather limited and software control using Fan Xpert (Included in AI Suite II) can reduce fan noise even more, and eliminate it altogether below a user-defined fanspeed curve with the Auto-Fan Stop option..The fans will run at 100% until the BIOS loads/beeps or until the OS loads AI Suite II..You don't have to install everything in the AI Suite II package, only what you need/want..You can get it here in the Utilities section if you need/want it..I suggest manually creating a restore point prior to installing AI Suite II..My fans would drive me bonkers without Fan Xpert.

Well, I used fan expert to get that percentange. I have fan expert set to silent mode for the CPU fan. But I can't just unplug the CPU fan, can I? I mean, even for five seconds, it would still get too hot, right?

Yeah, unpluging/stopping the fan on that heatsink is not a good idea, even at idle.

Maybe it's not the cpu fan that's making all the noise. Try unpluging all the case fans and see if that makes any noticeable difference.

Since you have Fan Xpert, the easiest way is to just switch the CPU Fan from Smart Mode to RPM Fix Mode and move the slider to 0 to shut it off/slow it down for testing purposes like I just did in the pic below..You can do that for any other fans too..It won't hurt at all to unplug it though, the CPU won't heat up all that fast.

Hmmm, your fan Expert looks different than mine. Are you sure about shutting down the fan? Tucker147 said that was a bad idea.

    Update:

I found the cause of half the noise; a fan plugged directly into the PSU. Disconnected it. Still though, my system makes a little more noise than I would like it to. It is either the GPU, CPU, or PSU.

The CPU won't overheat if you just unplug it's fan briefly for testing purposes..You can stop the GPU fan just with your finger in the center of it..You can stick a toothpick or something in the PSU fan to keep it from spinning before you power on your system or block the intake with a sheet of paper..Or you can just use your ear with a tube from a paper towell roll or make a tube from rolled up paper or something or whatever to isolate the noise..No need to be paranoid about stopping/unplugging/restricting fans briefly/momentarily just to see what's noisy..It takes what it takes.

I call it:  "Friday night light". Usually like this on Friday evenings for some reason. Anyway, have you tried a different PSU? Can't you put your ear next to the open case, and see if it's the PSU, or something else?

Re: I am trying to figure out why my system is so noisy! 2014/11/15 03:48:18 (permalink)
So, I unplugged the intake fan, output fan, and CPU fan (with extreme caution to not let it get above 100F)

I then did lots off plugging in and removing fans.

I discovered that yes, the CPU fan is noisy.

However, after unplugging removing only the CPU fan, while quieter it is still a tad bit louder on idle than I'd like it to be. The front/rear fans are silent. That leave the PSU and GPU. It is a CX500, and I currently am pulling about 350W. So, I am pretty sure it is the GPU. However, since I have got an AMD CPU and no MB integrated graphics, and no spare graphics card lying around, I think I am stuck. I will however pickup a CMH212E on Black Friday, if it will fit in my case.

I think you were given several possible answers to your problem. Starting another thread won't solve the problem. If anyone else thinks they can help, they will post here.

What I should have said is: is there anyway to tell if it is the PSU or GPU? I tried making a piece of paper into a cone, and holding it close to both, and it didn't help.
