This hasn't happened to me but I do believe that having it in your cart should reserve it. However this may cause problems.

Online shopping isn't the same as real shopping.

In real shopping, your cart is the thing which carries the physical product to the checkout lane. When you put it in your cart, you physically pull it from the shelf.

In online shopping, it is a cookie which remembers which item you are interested in purchasing. The quantity 'on the shelf' doesn't change when you add the product to your online cart. It remembers your cart items client-side, not server side. Every time you visit a page, your computer says 'hey server, show that there is an item in the card and show that it is X item'. And then, as soon as the server is done sending you the webpage, it immediately forgets that there is something in your cart. The server doesn't know how many clients are interested in something and therefore cannot reserve it.

Additionally, if placing it in your cart caused it to be reservered, there would be scalping because some guy would put the whole stock in his cart and hold it hostage for a fee.

I don't think any online retailer will reserve an item for you just because you put it in your cart. Neither will the price be guaranteed. The only exception that I know of is online sales for tickets, like was said in the OP. But for actual merchandise, I haven't seen it.
 
You can put an item in your cart, and as long as you don't restart your computer or clear your browser cache, it can potentially stay in your cart forever. Should EVGA deny someone else who has $369 right now this second who will give their money to EVGA immediately, just because someone else has put it in their shopping cart?
 
I went through this same scenario when i bought my GTX 680 SC back in April 2012. I got two or three auto-notify emails, but it was too late when I got to my computer. Finally I got an e-mail when I was pumping gas, and I went to the EVGA web site on my phone (where I had bookmarked the product page and logged in already). I managed to get my purchase in before they ran out, even though I was using an old Motorola Droid X (on 3G).

What about good ol' Europe? I've been trying to get a FTW now for a month, it seems not even small supplies are coming in, the only shop is caseking.de which had very small supplies 2 days in a month now.

I would expect more availability there very soon as well but I do not have the exact date just yet. I will check.

Woo, I got one this time!  Happened to be on the phone and saw the email notification immediately.  Thanks EVGA_JacobF for letting us know there was more coming up this week.  Now if only I could will-call..I live a short walk from your HQ, lol.

Quick question...I'm thinking of getting this model too. Is the back plate hard to install? Why didn't it come with the back plate already added on. And also, is the back
plate only for people who do water cooling?

Thanks! And that sucks, I really wanted to buy from here but keeps selling out in matter or probably a min. or less. But I'm so excited, replacing a 560ti . Ordered an Oculus DK2 also so can't wait for that!
