This hasn't happened to me but I do believe that having it in your cart should reserve it. However this may cause problems.

I ordered a 970 FTW yesterday from a retailer here in Sweden saying the cards would be in stock this Sunday 26/10 but just noticed the date got changed to 5/11. Just hoping I won't miss out on the free backplate.

Was this the second stock of the GTX970 FTW? I received an e-mail for the first, but was sold out by the time I got to it. So I resubmitted a second auto-notify just in case, but I still have not received anything about a second stock of the GTX970FTW..... Double checked with my friend and he didnt get an e-mail either. He must be talking about the first stock.

Arent the gtx 970 FTW supposed to already include the backplate in the box? I thought only ssc and below needed to order the backplate.

Well...
Got a e-mail alert that the 970 FTW was back in stock just as I was getting on the freeway coming home from work, pulled over real quick and managed to get it in my cart for the SECOND TIME again from my phone
Got all the way thru it again typing on my phone, hit purchase....
GUESS WHAT??
Out Of Stock AGAIN :-(
I think I will move on to another MFG, this being the only place to get a 970 FTW in a pain :-(

Online shopping isn't the same as real shopping. In real shopping, your cart is the thing which carries the physical product to the checkout lane. When you put it in your cart, you physically pull it from the shelf. In online shopping, it is a cookie which remembers which item you are interested in purchasing. The quantity 'on the shelf' doesn't change when you add the product to your online cart. It remembers your cart items client-side, not server side. Every time you visit a page, your computer says 'hey server, show that there is an item in the card and show that it is X item'. And then, as soon as the server is done sending you the webpage, it immediately forgets that there is something in your cart. The server doesn't know how many clients are interested in something and therefore cannot reserve it. Additionally, if placing it in your cart caused it to be reservered, there would be scalping because some guy would put the whole stock in his cart and hold it hostage for a fee.

Tell me about it. Luckily, it seems that I must've slid in there right before they were gone this time. Got the auto-notify E-mail at 12:52pm EST. Placed the order just before 12:56pm EST. Checked my E-Mail for the order confirmation (Received), then checked the product page again at 12:58pm EST, and they were gone again. Insanity.

What about good ol' Europe? I've been trying to get a FTW now for a month, it seems not even small supplies are coming in, the only shop is caseking.de which had very small supplies 2 days in a month now.
