They are both Windows. So, which version are you referring to versus 8.1? Anyway, I like Win 7 for Gaming.

I have no issues with gaming on win 8.1, I actually get a fps boost in BF4 with win 8.1. A lot of ppl complain about the start menu, I found a quick fix for that, I use the following program:

Here are some BF4 vids I made showing it running on Win 7 and Win 8.1:

you could  downlaod the Windows 10  TP build and run it as it will be continued to be updated  and it should work and you can give your feedback  on it to Ms

Go with Win 7 for now, better software compatibility and it doesnt look like a kid's toy. Windows 10 looks like what 8 should have been but we'll have to wait and see what the final product is like.

Thanks guys. I am so used to W7 - and do have some older games (which is a concern) - but I realize that eventually it is time to move on.

I haven't had any real issues regarding game compatibility on Windows 8.1.  The only issue I've really had is the pain of getting used to the new layout.

Win 8.1 works better for games, period. Yeah, it's a different layout but it flat out works better than Win 7 and is more stable than Win 7 too, which says I lot IMO.

I, too struggled with the layout of Win 8.1 at first. Then I installed a program called start8, did some minor tinkering with the settings and never looked back. Now my Win 8.1 looks similar to Win 7 but runs a lot better, especially when it comes to memory management.

A bit of a note on Windows 10 Preview. It has neither WDDM 2.0 nor DirectX 12.0 in yet. Also it has extensive logging going back to Microsoft tracking it's use. I would not recommend Windows 10 Preview in a home use environment.

they use the logging  only for the  purpose of  looking at the uses of it what your using it for  along with the Feedback app  so it is not as big of a deal as everyone makes it out to be .  Also  Vista   and windows 7  and  8/8.1 had the same thing   so it is nothing new    but yea it is there to  go ok so your using this  on a  this system and your using it that way ok  interesting it is not going Oh look your passwords and  stuff

I was hesitant at first with windows 8. upgraded and my system ran so much better, used the free upgrade to 8.1 and couldnt be happier. I personally use classicshell and it looks like 7 but runs much better.

Add another voice for Win 8.1 and Classic Shell.

Many performance and other improvements over Win 7, IMHO and actually usable with Classic Shell added and the "Metro" interface effectively removed from the picture.

I'd say 8.1 as well.  I was going to do 7 due to an older flightsim I use that can have USB controller dropouts if you tab out of the game, but it's fixable with a utility for the most part.  Other than that hardware to game issue, all of my older actual games and software are working just fine since I went with 8.1.  One thing I also noticed is with all my stuff installed and only windows, drivers, and things that don't give a location option installed on C: my C: partition is 15-20GB lighter with win 8.1 than win 7.  That's compared to installing win 7 on freshly formatted C: right before that, and actually not having all my stuff reinstalled yet when I decided to swap to 8.1.

Re: Windows or 8.1 for gaming? 2014/10/21 17:09:28 (permalink)
I'm just finishing up my new build. I was going to do a Win 7 & 8.1 dual boot but the more I researched and talked with people who have been using 8.1, I've decided to drop 7 and the dual boot idea. I now have 8.1 in UEFI mode and on a GPT (not MBR) drive and I can't believe how fast it boots up. Everything runs like butter! Now I just need to decide on Classicshell, Start8 or some other program to get 8.1 looking more...."normal".

I would suggest Start8. Been using it every since it came out. You cant tell the brain dead 7 users 8 is better for gaming. They are just as bad as XP users. Majority never even used 8 and just on the hate train because its "cool".

you really dont need a start menu replacment in windows 8.1 since most the stuff you rpolly want to acces can be  done via Rick Click on the start button.  also if you end up running windows 10 TP which Ms just released the first update to it via windows update has a start menu  soso yea

Funny you mentioned this...the more I researched which "start menu" program to use the more I started to come to the same conclusion as you. I think these tools were more needed and appreciated in Win 8...not so much with 8.1 I believe. Not sure if I'm thinking on the right track though since I never used 8 and just now getting experience w/ 8.1 on a new build. Just going by what I've read up on so far.

I played around with win 8 x64 for a while and i found it no different than win 7 for gaming, except that win 8 is way too xbox style for my desktop, hated it in fact. 10 looks to be more of the same fugly ui.

if you want a good solid 2-3% gain Windows 8, its a more lightweight and better optimized OS, Windows 7 by comparison feels sluggish

Yeah I was surprised.  With Win 8.1 installed and comparing my C: partition size to a fresh install of Win7 with the exact same software, drivers, etc. installed.........Win 8.1 has nearly 20GB more free space than the Win7 install did.  I was shocked.  Usually OS's seem to want more space not less as you go to the next version.

edit:  I was using comparable versions as well, Win7 Pro vs. Win 8.1 Pro

I liked 7 better overall. Mainly because it was built for PC's only. All the tablet features have bloated the OS IMO. Windows 8.1 is very stable for me though.

you do know that windows 8.1  uses less HDD space then windows 7  despite the  Modern   UI interface right.    also have ya tested or tried windows 10 out
