Anyone that already has one know what time Newegg usually updates their stock? I've been waiting for a month and a half and still have yet to actually see it available!

Honestly, I know that waiting for it sucks but it's sooo completely worth it. I wouldn't give up on your order yet.

Yup, 100% agree with houkom. Just wait, absolutely worth it. Especially since you have the hardware to take full advantage of the swift.

I sure hope Asus are taking this time to fully build their supply of these, because if they come back for a week and then are gone for a month into early December...that's an incredibly silly underestimation of demand.
Same thing with Nvidia and Maxwell. People are literally throwing hundreds at their monitors but nothing is happening

My Rog Swift arrived Monday from Newegg. I set it up easy enough. Initially, my desktop looked "washed out", like the brightness was too high. I fiddled with it but couldn't get it to look the way I wanted. Then I realized I had forgot to update my video driver (337.88). I loaded the new driver and boom, everything looked great. Loaded up some games and smooth as silk. No dead or stuck pixels. Beautiful monitor. Some pics:
Don't panic, the second pic looks terrible because my G4 has trouble focusing for some reason.

When i saw the box, i was like holy cow...... it was so freakin huge !

I have played around with it more. I really like both g sync and ULMB mode. I honestly am having problems picking which to use. I was a CRT user til not that long ago, and the ULMB mode makes me feel like i am on a CRT, and that is pretty awesome for me. The size of this monitor is perfect, i dont think i would want larger. Res is spot on, even though a single GTX 980 might be a hair too slow for this res. Its fine if i turn off AA though. All in all, amazing piece of kit.

Good to hear you guys are enjoying the Swift after waiting sooo long...

I still haven't ever tried ULMB yet.  I started with Gsync right off and it worked so well, I never tried anything else.  Might have to at least test it out.

Give it a shot in something that is fast paced, like quake, counter-strike and you will see what i mean, perfect fluid movement, its so clean like a CRT you can strafe against a wall and read letters, something normally you can't do on a LCD.

That's one thing I'm looking forward to after having used these Yamakasi Catleaps for so long. I know color reproduction won't be quite as good, but I'm betting I won't mind trading it for crystal clear movement again. It took me a LONG time to abandon my CRT back in the day. And even then, I've never actually owned a TN panel monitor. I went from A-HVA to IPS and never touched a TN. They've always looked so washed out. From what I've seen of this Swift, though, the colors are actually quite nice.

Yeah they were very well out of the box. My old monitor, an alienware aw2310 120 hz, which at the time was one of the best TNs you could get, looks so bad in comparison. All i had to do was reduce the brightness, its far too high out of the box, and it was almost perfect.

Don't get me wrong, g sync is also awesome, its so smooth and no micro tears anymore. This is why it is hard for me to pick which mode to leave it on.

I've seen quite a few reviews by people that have had 120/144hz panels with the ulmb mod before trying out the Swift that have said they have a hard time really telling the difference between the two.

I imagine it was probably similar. My old alienware couldn't support ULMB so this is my first fortay into it.

I was reading a little about ULMB, and it sounds interesting.  Are ULMB and G-Sync mutually exclusive?

Re: Asus ROG SWIFT PG278Q 2014/10/16 11:09:47 (permalink)
I don't believe you can use both at once, at least no monitor out right now actually does that. It's either G-sync mode or ULMB mode. It's a little confusing to me because it seems like for G-sync to offer the reduced blur that it does (and lack of tearing) it would have to be controlling the backlight as well. However, I can see how you'd still get tearing in ULMB mode since the screen refresh isn't controlled, simply the backlight strobing to the output is. I'd imagine that G-sync would be superior, but from what I've read, a lot of people haven't been able to tell much of a difference.

I don't have a personal opinion simply because I have yet to be able to purchase one of them!

Sounds like that would be heavily dependent on the specific persons eyes, like why some people at the same movie say the 3D jumped off the screen, other see nothing, others get a headache.

Sounds like 2 techs that really should be able to be enabled together, that would be absolutely awesome.

I think products might automatically go to that "not in stock and may not be restocked" stage and not show up in listings after they haven't actually been in stock for awhile.
The Asus Strix 970 has the same thing right now...and I'm certain that's gonna be restocked.

Microcenter, as i found out with the GTX 980s, do not put anything on their website to service walk ins. They happily have all sorts of items in the store. If they put these items on their website, people would be trying to buy it instantly and walk in customers get the shaft. I would go to the store and ask. It came out to be 862 $ total. If they don't have an item they have it shipped from other stores or warehouses. I don't know how they got a swift in 2 days, but they did. The gtx 970s/980s are kept in the manager's office in the back and have to be signed out to be bought, so they are pretty serious about those right now stock wise.

In stock at Newegg. Go Go Go!

And no, they're not. I was going to order a replacement PCB to see how I'd like the difference, but I just never got around to it.

I've been following this thread for a few days as I've been pondering with an idea of 1440p / g-sync panel. Thanks for your great contributions / comments! They definitely helped me in the process of making a purchase decision.
...now I feel I should give something back to the "community" :-)

I pulled the trigger and purchased the Swift PG278Q a few days ago.
Just so you know where I'm coming from. My current (or I should say old) monitor is Dell 2312HM (1080p IPS) also used 27" IPS 1440p (Benq GW2765HT) for a short time. A few weeks ago I treated myself with a new gtx 970 and a "monitor idea" came alongside :) 1080p doesn't pay 970 a justice I think ;) I was "semi" happy with 1440p benq - all looked great until things started to move on the screen...screen tearing and stuttering - just horrible and painful to watch (black flag, witcher 2)

I was a bit worried about the picture quality on swift as I didn't have a good experience with TFT panels. I was playing with BenqXL2411T a year ago or so and was very disappointed with colours (washed out) and picture quality in general. So I ended up with IPS dell 2312HM. I've been generally happy with it for nearly 2 years since I built my rig but tearing was getting on my nerves big time.

Anyways, I received PG278Q this afternoon ("UK time") Yay! :-)  I've been using it for 6h on games (Far Cry 3, Metro Redux, NBA 2k15, AC Black Flag, Trine 2) and general use (you tube, browsing). and here are my first impressions:

- This monitor screams quality and no-nonsense from the moment you take it out of the box
- It looks gorgeous. The panel is almost flushed with the bezel. No unnecessary cheesy c**p.
- Have to mention it sorry...the menu and how the way it's designed - outstanding. Joystick - thumbs up. So quick and easy to operate. I know it's a minor thing but it's a perfect example of how much thought went into designing this product.
- Picture quality - as good as my IPS Dell!  Slightly less saturated colours but I actually think this makes them more natural (something like amoled vs ips on mobile phones).
- At this point, once I found picture quality great, I was really excited to test the rest (g-sync 144hz etc)  as my biggest worry was gone
- g-sync!  the ultimate selling point (well at least at this point in time). No tearing or stuttering (99% of time I should say as sometimes I see stutters)...sweet!!! - gameplay is as smooth as butter
- 1440 rocks....everything is so sharp but I was expecting this after IPS benq...if you haven't seen 1440 in action you should because it's freakin awesome...def a future of gaming
- did I mention a power button - instant. Click and screen is black. another click and it's back on. Just the way it should be!
- in short this monitor is a joy to use
- no bleeding or dead pixels
- this monitor totally exceeded my expectations.

Only negative is the price £620 in the UK and the fact you need a powerful rig to maintain good fps (50+)

btw, I don't seem to be able to set 144hz permanently and every time I enter a new game / application I have to press the button to go into 120 / 144 hz.

Now, I'm seriously considering going SLI (currently a single gtx 970) as 1440 is very taxing. But picture is just too "sweet / buttery" in 80+ fps on this monitor to ignore such idea ;) what do you guys think about this?

Sorry for the length of this post

Re: Asus ROG SWIFT PG278Q 2014/10/26 05:51:29 (permalink)

Nice review...

As far as going SLI, if you want to push higher frames, then go for it.  That's up to you and your budget...  As long as your PSU and system will support it, you should be good to go.
