I am considering upgrading my computer because it's starting to fall behind a little. The only problem is the CPU 1156 socket is not being manufactured anymore and it would be a hassle buying from 3rd party sites and hoping it works and doesn't blow up in my face. A big red flag is the CPU listed below because it would be the first option I would choose to upgrade.

My current system is:

CPU: Intel Core I5 750 (1156 socket) @ 2.67GHz
Motherboard: EVGA P55 SLI E655
Ram: DDR3, 4GB, Dual Channel, running at 1333mhz (explanation below)
GPU: EVGA 560 1GB
Using regular disk drives.
Using x4 Ultra 750Watt Power supply.
HAF 922 case.

Should I wait for better CPUs to hit the market before upgrading? Since 1156 isn't being made anymore, getting a new CPU would make me get a new motherboard and possibly RAM which could add up to 400-500 if I'm lucky.

I do not like overclocking because if it broke on my mistake, I could replace it but don't want to risk it. That is way my RAM runs at 1333Mhz, the cpu is limiting it because of the 1156 architecture. I just don't know if now is the right time to jump ship off of 1156.

My I ask what is falling behind for you?  Is it gaming?  My Mom is still rocking the i5 750 system I built her a few years ago and still plays most games with an AMD 7770.

If it is gaming performance I would ask what resolution you are gaming at.  If it is a high resolution you would be better off upgrading the 560 GPU to something more powerful.

We need more info in what you feel you are missing out on in terms of performance.

^ Yes, all of this additional info would be great.  If you play lots of modern games (that aren't 2D indie games) at 1080p or larger, you would benefit greatly from a new GPU and motherboard/CPU.  LGA 1156 is very old.

I'm running 1920x1080 and some of the newer games are starting to lag me but only on max settings. Games like tomb raider, metro last light, all graphic intense games. It's not annoying but I can live with it.

I'm still rocking my 9650x(775 socket), which is starting to really show it's age, w/ EVGA 680 4gb. I upgraded the gpu about a year and half ago to get a little more life out of system. Although I have my cpu clocked at 4.0 ghz. I also went from 4gb ram to 8gb. If you're not wanting to do a complete overhaul, you could upgrade that 560 to a 700 series and add some ram. Otherwise a complete overhaul is calling. I have no issues w/ all current games like tomb raider, MLL, crysis, bioshock, had to crank down settings a little on watchdogs but still very playable.

OK, my recommendation would be to upgrade to a better GPU.  You don't need to spend a boat load of money either to get a very good increase in performance over your dated GTX560.

I would recommend you upgrade to something like a GTX760.  Also, overclock your CPU to something tame in the 3.2 - 3.4 GHz range.  I built 2 systems around 3 years ago with i5 750's that have been OC'd to 3.8GHz for 24/7 usage ever since without a hiccup.  Your CPU at 3.4GHz and a GTX760 you will notice an incredible increase in gaming performance for less than $300.

EDIT:  Actually, forget the GTX760....just get the GTX970.

Thanks for the responses. Looking at the evga 760 and I can say that would be a huge boost. I might also look into overclocking just a little bit.

Yes, don't be afraid of the overclock.  When I cranked my Mom's CPU to 3.8GHz it barely took much voltage and only increased temps by 10 degrees or so.  A 3.4 GHz clock speed will be nothing to your processor.

Just keep your voltage below 1.4 on the CPU if you decide to overclock, that's within safe ranges... You won't kill it with heat that way.
