Gone are the day's when you purchased a 6800 Ultra and knew that what you had meant something. It just a pet peeve I suppose seeing things like 780 Ti, GTX Titan! When all they are is a re-hash of a prior product per say. Dual GPU cards get a pass from this argument, as they truly are a unique breed of card. It just made sense to me seeing things like: 6800le 6800 6800 GT 6800 Ultra (flagship product in it's day) As much as I do love NVIDIA, I will say I feel like they are really dirty dogging us. releasing your normal high end cards such as the GTX 770 and 780 at the normal $350-550 market, then within months releasing another card of the same exact naming scheme with slightly better performance and marketing it above the already high end GPU segment at $550. I am finding this very hard to explain how I am feeling, as it only makes sense in my head lol. Perhaps what I am saying is when buying an Advertised Flagship GPU, is it really a flagship GPU? *pondering* GTX 760 GTX 770 GTX 780(Flagship right???) $550 GPU GTX 780Ti(wait where does this fit in the market?) $700! GTX Titan(Okay special card I suppose?) $1000(shouldn't this be a dual GPU card o.O) GTX Titan Z(wait okay dual GPU card...very hip) $3000!!!! wasn't every dual GPU card in that past $1000 or less? Anyone remember the GeForce 7950GX2? $650 MSRP!! here we are 8 years later and a dual GPU now will run us more than 4X that amount! Just not sure what to think of the GPU market in today's world. It has really changed in the later years. I am glad however performance has really came along way, but the prices for a flagship card have really gone through the roof, that or the term flagship card, really doesn't really mean anything. Anyone have any thoughts? Just seeing if others have noticed this trend. and sorry if anyone finds this post utterly confusing, I think I may have confused myself a little :)

The only thing that bothers me is the high prices. I have not bought a new nVidia gpu since the GTX 680, which wasn't really what should have been a flagship card. I also do not like the cards with smaller pcb and a fan tacked onto the end of it and the pci-e power plugs in the middle of the card. Reeks of cheap to me.

I think ya have a rosier picture of the 6-series generation... here's the full list of cards. Try keeping track of these when people ask for buying advice for a GPU or if they spot random retail specials! 6800 6800 LE 6800 XE 6800 XT 6800 GS 6800 GT 6800 GTO 6800 Ultra 6800 Ultra Extreme By comparison, I can tell anyone where any 7-series card slots in compared to the others. I'm much happier with current naming conventions The 6800 XT was crazy... that GPU could have used any of 3 different cores inside, DDR, DDR2, or GDDR3 types of memory, and offered very different levels of performance. In total, 6800 cards could have been using the NV40, NV41, NV42, NV45, or NV48 core and good luck figuring it out even on identical models!
Have water, will cool.

We should all agree to stop buying video cards till they price their flagships at a 300-400 price point again

Lol sad truth. And I know the 6800 series did have some other random cards, but for the flagship price point, it was still $550 or so. And yes, I truly miss the "Ultra" tag, just something special about it!

Well you upgrade when you can based on your budget. I'd love to have a GTX 980 myself but my budget won't allow it, so I will try and get a GTX 970 FTW.

RJ is wrong. I've been at the same place of employment for 27 years, make $33.69 per hour with all the overtime I could want at $50.53 per hour after 8 hours of work, my health benefits are paid for by the company, I also get a pension and live in the mid west economy. I simply refuse to pay these prices of the flagship cards and the lower priced cards reek of cheapness.

Honestly I'm kinda surprised we didn't see a price jump a few years ago. it seemed like a flagship card would run you $500-550 for about 10 years straight. Budget and price has nothing to do when I upgrade. I upgrade when a game comes out that I can not run as I'd like to.

if your card does what you need it to do, don't upgrade. If your card is lagging behind what you want or need, upgrade if you have the funds... I used to upgrade just to upgrade..now I find it silly to spend the $ on something that I won't see benefit from.. I really only play a TINY bit of WoW nowadays and my GTX 680 is fine for that.

I'm kind of glad for the new naming scheme. Makes it easier to keep track of those GPU models. The "Ti" models did throw me off at first, but it is simple to understand what it meant. I'm really glad that Nvidia decided to skip the 800 series and go straight to 900 series for naming the "Maxwell" chips. Nvidia was getting foggy with their chip naming on the low-end GPU's. What you might think was a "Kepler" chip on the GT640, was actually a rehash of the "Fermi" chip. Though the GT750 and GT750Ti were a nice surprise to be "Maxwell" types.

Actually, the vast majority of the 640's are Kepler (GK107/GK208). It's the only lower-end 600 retail card that can output to 3 monitors simultaneously (among EVGA cards, at least). The only Fermi version of the 640 is an OEM version. The GT 630's and lower, however, are generally Fermi refreshes.

WTB: GeForce GTX TITAN ULTRA Will pay: $650. Must be GM200/210 model. I do agree the prices of $1000 and up are a tad ridiculous. Though some of the newer names I like, such as the TITAN. TITAN Black was dumb. TITAN Z was really dumb. Something like TITAN MAX would make much more sense for the TITAN Z. Things I don't like with NV recently: DVI ports Green light <-- really unhappy with this even now. Pricing of $1k for top single GPU. I shouldn't even need to mention the TITAN Z @ $3k which makes absolutely zero sense, it should have been $1600 at MOST. Skipping 100, 300, and 800. Wut. Whatever happened to x85? (IE, GTX 285, etc) Lastly I HATE that they released GK104 as a flagship card, and are now doing the same thing with GM204. I do very much like the TITAN cooler design, lower power draw and lower TDPs of the current cards though. I'd still also like to see a good single slot reference card.

Old naming scheme was a mess. I didnt know that xt card is slower than gt etc. Atleast in current naming scheme u can get an idea that 760 is slower than 770 etc etc
