From Prof. Vijay Pande:  Issues with new Assignment Server code

September 26, 2014 by Vijay Pande

We’ve been getting many reports over night regarding issues with the new Assignment Server (AS) code we’ve just rolled out.  It’s 8am pacific time now and we’re looking into this now.

I also started getting only Core15 WUs two days ago, but since yesterday I'm getting the "Empty work server assignment" error, so I've shut down my folding rigs for now and wait untill this will be fixed.

    Update:
It looks like the Assignment Server(s) issue is fixed.
According to Bollix47 from the Folding Forum: "Assignment software appears to have been rolled back to a previous version until the source of the problems with the newer version have been located and fixed.

I've just started my folding rigs and got Core17 WUs (P13000/1) again.

Well I only got it like 20 mins ago lol. Looks like about 4h, final credit 14093 @ ~86k ppd. PRCG 7623. Lets see if my overclock holds.

Not all that sure how high I want to push the voltage, at 1.2v right now with core clock at 1495mhz. Could still use a little fine tuning but that will come later. Just keep on running into this thing where if I push the core clock to high it won't go past 1127mhz during fire strike. Don't know if thats normal considering I'm coming from a gtx 470 that doesn't have k-boost

Prepare for the possibility of some more AS funkiness next week:

Joseph CofflandAfter a false start we've resumed live testing of the new Assignment Server. This server is a complete rewrite of the old AS. We've been testing it for several months but there were a few bugs that didn't become apparent until we left it in full deployment for a couple of days. We have identified and resolved several issues but there may be more. Please be patient while we get this straightened out. We will fall back to the old AS again if more problems occur.

The new AS has a lot of features that will help us detect problems earlier and provide us with better tools for analyzing problems when they do occur. So there may be a few more bumps but you can expect better resource allocation and less problems in the future.

    Thanks,

    Joseph

Joseph CofflandFYI, I've rolled back to the old AS for now since we don't like to run new code over the weekend. I will redeploy the new AS on Monday.

I just noticed that the new Assignment Server is back in action.
I just got a Core15 (P7627) again on my GTX780 Ti, just like the previous time when the new AS code was running, instead of a Core17 WU (Project 13000/13001, which I normally get with the "advanced" flag).  I'm using FAHClient v7.3.6 with the "advanced" flag on all my GPUs.

Edit: Also got a Core15 WU (P7621) on my other GTX780 Ti and all my GTX660 Ti's also just got Core15 WUs (P7624, P7621 and P8018).

Yeah... they would really do well to give Core 15 the QRB.

I've been getting a mix of 17/15 on my gtx 980, but still more 15's then 17's. Not running any flags as I don't know them that well, just getting use to the new client after a year and a half absence from folding. 105k ppd on 15's, and 350 kpp with 17's. Wish they would recognize the major gaps here and at least try to close the gap a little.

Your electric bill should be relatively low compared to similar pdd with older cards. With colder temps approaching, you can fold for "free" in the winter. Any dollar spent folding is a dollar saved heating your apartment. I haven't run my furnace in two years.

Been on core 15 for two days now.  What a waste of electricity.  Missed tier 2 evga bucks this month since I was counting on my 780 Classy to pump out those core 17's.

Would have been longer if they didn't re-initiate whatever it is they're doing over the weekend like they originally were going to do.  Funny how every time something breaks Core 15 just rolls along just fine.  It's never the opposite way around.

Okay, I may have been a little harsh.  I should clarify:  core 15's are an inefficient use of electricity when I can get much more GPU work done with various crunching projects instead.

Core 15 is like all the animals in the woods running in in one direction - away from you. "Uh-oh.."
BTW if you thing 15 is bad, try 16 on AMD - 3,5K ppd ;)

I wouldn't say it was harsh.  They were garbage when they came out.  Science out of the equation, the project grew to what it is today because of competition.  They've been the bane of everyone's folding from Day 1 before Core 17 or Kepler.

Thing is that the actual Folding rate on Core 15 isn't awful - if Stanford would just institute a QRB on them, I think we'd be willing to put up with them.

It's the lack of QRB that makes them suck so bad.  And that is totally a project-manager decision - why should core 17 reward quick returns and core 15 not?  I mean...unless core 15 really IS worthless, Stanford doesn't care when they get them back - they are just feeding them to us to keep systems running while they come up with something needed.

So...it is a bit annoying seeing a week go by with nothing but core 15.

Saw this update on the AS problems from yesterday on the Folding Forums:
    https://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=26794

    Re: Testing new AS

    by bruce » Thu Oct 02, 2014 8:35 pm
According to the information I have received, at least three problems have been fixed today.
    1) Maxwell was not getting Core_17.  Fixed based on the availability of Core_18 assignments or on Core_17 in Advanced. 2) Clients that are restricted to port 80 have had problems getting 0x17 assignments if client-type=FAH (default) or =ADVANCED.  Fixed. 3)  V6 SMP and V7 seem to have been working but there was a problem with v6 GPU clients.  Fixed.
Going forward, please avoid additional discussion unless a) those issues have not been resolved or b) you're reporting a different problem.
How to provide enough info to get helpful support.

    Nope, it's all BS.
Since I saw your post I tried everything including trying all flags, dumping cores, re-configure slots, re-starting client, re-booting machine and they keep replacing the core_15.

I've been getting core 18s for about 24 hours running the beta flag. I noticed that I returned a number of bad work units, so I turned down the overclock on the 980s.

undoing your OC will not help that widsss,  under clock the card still  it will  be bad work units, -150mhz  still bad work  units.

Hey DutchForce  am coming for you now. Better start folding!!!

I see you on my threats list   ... your GTX980 has a VERY impressive PPD !!!
I'm still folding on all my GPUs (see my sig), but I'm mostly getting Core15 WUs and only had a few Core17/18 WUs the past four days.
