My impression was that step up was only available for ref models, but Im sure I could also be wrong...

Usually you have to be stepping up in series as well.. like 7xx to 9xx.. not 980 vanilla to 980 classy for example.. and yeah, usually they only have the vanilla model available for step-up, at least when the series first rolls out.

    EVGA_Marketing
Regarding the recent GTX 970 feedback, we would like to provide the following statements and actions to address it:

    1. We understand that some users were expecting the ACX 2.0 fan version to be available on the launch day, but unfortunately the ACX 2.0 development schedule did not allow us to have ACX 2.0 product available at launch. We plan to offer an ACX 2.0 fan upgrade program, stay tuned for news on this.

    2. For EVGA GTX 970 ACX cards we have two different fansink designs, FTW ACX 2.0, and SSC and below. For those users who have SSC and below, and are not pleased with the cooling performance, we are adding the GTX 970 FTW to the stepup program as an option.

    3. We are going to release a new BIOS upgrade to all 970 ACX owners that will fine tune the fan performance and provide better acoustics. Stay tuned.

    4. Some EVGA users have reported inductor noise on their GTX 970, if you think you have this type of concern then please contact our support.

Sorry for the inconvenience, EVGA's top priority is customer satisfaction.

    Thanks,
    Joe

You mean this post? What about it? Nothing about step up there.

Here ya go.. found some answers, and you are correct, it can be within the same series too [LINK] :

Most cards with a 3 year warranty can be stepped up within the 90 day period. The limitation is not on what card you can step up from, but what cards you can step up to, based on the step up list on this page: http://www.evga.com/support/stepup/.

As long as you have a -KR card, which is purchased within the last 90 days, and registered within the first 14 days, or if it was not registered within 14 days you can purchase the extended warranty on the card to unlock step up, you are good to go. Keep in mind the lower the cost of the card, the less credit it will be worth and therefore the more it will cost to step up.

The current 900 series cards on the step-up list are:

So no worries, you can step up from the 970 SC (both ACX and non-ACX) to the 970 FTW ACX 2.0
