I would compare it more to Vista then ME. ME was already on its way out before it was even released since it was still based on the Win 9x Kernel when NT was already out. Vista lasted for just over 2 1/2 years, while it looks like 10 will replace 8 in just over 3 years, or 2 years if you count 8.1.

Let's hope that 10 is as good of an update from 8 as 7 was from Vista. I like what I have seen. I am waiting to hear pricing options. I am sure I like the subscription idea. I also do not like the eternal tie into Microsoft servers. Would prefer to keep my distance, but the things I have seen make me interested. There us plenty of time for thus to solidify.

From what I read Win 10 sounds like it'll mostly be the same as Win 8 so I am sticking to Win 7 till Win 11 erm sorry Win 12 is released to replace Win 10 if it fails.

Of course it'll be like 8. The start menu is back, that's what most people complained about.

    I think it'll be a solid OS.

I also don't think we'll be seeing any major OS for awhile.

Actually it's more like I'll stick to what works and skip these OSes that are designed with mobile in mind.

For me, the start menu is used when trouble shooting , getting to the program that I use once in a great while or uninstalling programs. This means it is about useless for me and the "general public" (once they learn how to use windows more efficiently). "General public" cannot copy and past with the keyboard. Keyboard shortcuts are key to productivity and efficiency.
I didn't want to spend the money on 8 but was interested in it. I missed or never found the promotions for $40 or whatever it cost. My money went towards hardware instead.
If 10 is a decent price, I would get it. I would even do a yearly cost like Office 365 has, or do a bundle deal with both.

Did you read up about any of the new features? The UI itself changes depending on your input method. No more of that crappy start screen if you're using a mouse and keyboard. It looks almost exactly like Windows 7 except with the several major under-the-hood improvements Windows 8 brought to the table and tiles in the start menu, tiles which I'm almost 100% sure you can remove.

My initial thoughts on this new OS is that it appears to be what I would want and prefer in an OS.  Looking forward to it so far...  Time will tell as it gets tweaked & polished.

Better resources management > start button to me anyway.  I found it crazy how people stayed away from windows 8 simply because it had a UI that wasn't the desktop where you could easily avoid.

I guess it's more about people not feeling any pressure to upgrade their os as long as it's working to their needs and how familiar they are with it.

    Also it costs some dollars

I'm not superficially obsessed with the GUI of Win 8/8.1 and never saw anything wrong with it.  But the reason I stayed on 7 was maintaining XP program support and compatibility, and it looks like I need to purchase a copy of Win 7 before it EOL's since I'm hearing Win 8/8.1 made XP support difficult.  I'd like to think it is just an accidental repeat of Vista, and that 10 will retain support.

But if not then to hell with it; considering how long I tend to keep systems, I wonder if the next one will be the last x86 system, that my circa year 2020 DIY build will be using future ARM-based desktop parts.  Certainly no XP support then, but then I don't have to ditch old systems just because something new comes along, I can keep them all.

I'll have to finally upgrade whether I like it or not because Windows 7 won't have DirectX 12 support. That's the next big thing for games and I need to have it. I'll just have to get used to what ever crap Microsoft put in this new windows.

I think it's a comfort thing and sometimes, there isn't a choice.  I have Windows 8.1 on my desktops, because it was an easy install and upgrade.  I also have an HP Envy 17 3D laptop that I cannot upgrade to Windows 8.  Thanks to HP and the machine's bios and switchable graphics, they refuse to update the video drivers and I am stuck with Windows 7.  I have tried the upgrade, but once done, no driver set will allow the AMD 6850m to run.   In order to get the 3D portion of the graphics to work (both in movies and gaming), one needs the AMD card refreshing at 120HZ and it just doesn't work.  I would have upgraded to Windows 8 the day it came out except for this issue.  Others have hacked the driver set, but in my case it causes a black screen that the machine won't recover from.  HP just made the machine non upgradable.
