Hi, I have an EVGA X58 sli micro board with a i7 920 chipset.
I originally bought my system from Velocity Micro. I don't know exactly the case it is in, but it is a standard full-size case upright case. The mobo is screwed to an aluminum backplate.

Recently my CPU temps were running very hot. I attempted to reapply thermal paste (definitely the problem as the original thermal paste was now powder.). This was on the stock intel cpu heatsink/fan. Unfortunately, the plastic pushpins were old and brittle and broke when I tried to reseat the heatsink/fan.

So now I am needing to get a new one. It appears that any new heatsink I buy will require me to have access to the back of the motherboard, to apply a back plate. However, the only way I can access the back of the motherboard is by removing it from an alumium backplate that covers it completely. I am worried that I will end up destroying my mobo (which is old, obviously, but has been working great). Al the video tutorials I can find about removing mobos have to do with people who want to install a new mobo, not safely remove and reinstall the same one.

Does anyone have any suggestions on either:
1. A good cpu heatsink/fan that does not require a backplate on an LA 1366 install
or
2. A good tutorial (preferably with pics or vid) on how to safely remove mobo from backplate, add cpu heatsink backplate, and reinstall?

I know there are screws on the mobo to remove it from the backplate. My concern is how to do all of this without damaging my mobo.
Thanks for reading and any help you may be able to offer!

My suggestion would be to wait a few days and watch this thread, This board is full of enthusiasts that went with a aftermarket heat sink to OC their system....Now if Just a few of them are Pack Rats, that did NOT trash the Original heat sink that came with their 920 you should be able to get one for next to nothing Plus shipping, You might even get someone with one of the 970/980 heat sinks, I would have been able to help you, as I am a certified Pack Rat, and do NOT throw away anything, Unfortunately My Wife, Is not, and we are Moving, so she trashed my stash!

just look on ebay for an used 970/980 boxed tower cooler...very cheap there.

some weeks ago, i throw all my all stuff, i have still an socket 115x cpu holder and backplate here, but it will not help you, because it needs only three screws, yours need four... :(

Thanks you guys for the replies!
I should have mentioned that I really prefer a better-than-stock cooler. Originally I was going to do that because I already had thermal paste, and I don't like to waste things, so since the heatsink was working, I was going to see how much the temps improved with new thermal paste.

But since the heatsink is now dead, I would prefer a better cpu cooler. Unless getting one would probably cause me to kill my mobo. I'd really like to stretch out the life of my CPU, as well, and it seems a better cooler might do that.

Any ideas on coolers that utilize the holes on the 1366 mobo without requiring a backplate? Or a good tutorial on safe mobo removal/replacement in order to put in a new cooler?

Well, most coolers besides the stock cooler need a back plate. So you have two options, get a cooler that has stock or near stock performance, as I have not seen a quality cooler that doesn't need a back plate, or you take a venture into pulling out the motherboard and adding a back plate. Taking out your motherboard isn't much different then putting one in, both do require a good amount of space and time however. Also don't be running across carpet in your wool socks with your motherboard.

Newegg does have coolers that do not need a back plate but there not much improvement over the stock cooler.

this one here, is a stock cooler from intel, also blue led's inside, but not necessary at all...and damn it, the price is really high. but it use the stock holes in the 1366 board.
