I purchased a EVGA GTX 770 4GB FTW (SN: 04G-P4-3776-KR) and whenever I play a game the card makes a loud coil whine noise.

I uploaded a video on YouTube, type EVGA GTX 770 FTW Coil Whine Noise. The video has been uploaded by Michel Godmer, today Nov. 1st

There is no wire touching the fan, I don't understand what is happening and I don't want to play games and break it, what's wrong with it?

You can send the card back to EVGA (start an RMA) if the card makes noises, but it's "normal" and doesn't affect how the card works. Coil whine is an quite common problem nowadays, but according to my experience with 2 GTX 760 the coil whine stopped totally after I put the cards under heavy load. I'd suggest that you try Folding@EVGA for a few days and if the whine doesn't go away start an RMA to return the card to EVGA. However there is no warranty that the refurbished card you'll receive won't make similar noises.

Coil whine can be pretty normal and most times goes away after the card gets used some.  In the meantime, you are getting coil whine most likely because you are getting very high frame rates in your games.  If you turn vsync on to limit the frame rate to 60FPS, this should help.  Also, sometimes the coil whine can be due to lower quality power supplies or ones that are older.

Don't worry, it shouldn't break anything, it can just be annoying, but like I said it can go away after a while.  I would see how it goes over the next days and weeks and if it truly becomes too much noise, it can be RMA'd, but there is no guarantee the next card won't do the same.

    Good afternoon,

I do apologize for any issues you are having, coil whine is common on the mid to high end video cards. Coil whine can be caused by the video card or even the power supply. It would be suggested to test the video card on another system or with a different power supply if possible. Or if you would prefer we can assist with a RMA, just email me your serial number. RMA video cards are tested prior to shipment, including coil whine, although we do understand that each person has there own tolerance for it. If you have any other questions or would like to discuss this further feel free to send an email to JoeyC@evga.com.

I turned V-Sync On and the noise is gone. I am going to keep testing it for the couple days.

Not sure why coil whine would go away with use. It is due to the wire within the chokes (and sometimes transformers) vibrating at high current loads and you hear this vibration. It usually occurs with high loads on the voltage regulators so using VSYNC moderates it because you reduce the load (under some circumstances). If you FRs are normally below 60 then VSYNC may not help.

In that UTube video I could barely hear a difference so I am not sure what the fuss is about.

I am having the same problem with my 780 FTW. I don't understand why I would want to turn on vsync when I have a 144hz monitor and don't want to limit the fps. Going to try it for a few days and may return it. I never had a problem with the 670.

My 760 ACX Superclocked also has coil whine. But just to be clear.....this shouldn't shorten the lifespan of the card correct?

I would also like to know if ignoring this noise will mean a shorter lifespan?

It seems to not make any noise for games that allow me to enable v-sync. Once v-sync is enabled the whine disappears entirely!

I have 2x 770 SC ACX running in Sli, thanks to Evga RMA :), and I am not experiencing any coil whine. Is it the Acx cooler?
