Hello all,
First and foremost, I know this probably the hundredth thread regarding the GTX 900 series cards. While I like the GTX 980, for a bit more (roughly $125) I could grab two GTX 970's and put them in SLI. With that said, I would be coming off of GTX 670 FTW Edition cards in SLI. Does the upgrade make sense?  I am a bit tired of FPS drops at random points in games and such (splinter cell blacklist comes to mind) I skipped the 700 series largely due to marginal enhancements in performance.

Couple of additional clarifications:

1. The reason I am looking to do this is to just sell off my 670's before they aren't worth anything. I am a tech junkie/latest and greatest kind of guy. This is actually the first pc I have build that has lasted more than a year. With all that said, the replacement video cards would be moving from this system to a new system I plan to build Q2 next year (this assumes skylake isn't delayed).

2. I understand I can always add another 980 for SLI (this would likely "future-proof" the system for quite a long while. The term "future-proof" being loosely used as nothing is ever "future-proof".) The one thing that does stick in my head is to have one really good card and just ditch SLI. I have just been running SLI for a long time now. When we look at pricing and performance, is one GTX980 at $550 that much better than purchasing two (2) GTX970's at roughly $650-$660?

As an aside, I will be upgrading my dual/triple monitors in the future beyond 1080.

Thoughts?
THanks
chris

I had been searching for this, but does anyone have a benchmark and/or link to a set of benchmarks that compare 670 SLI to 970 or 980.  Anandtech only shows benchmarks from a single 670 to 980.  At that token, the 980 spanks a single 670.

    Thanks

Here's a personal experience someone eligntended me with last night when i was thinking about going with a single 980.  Besides the flashy new stuff like the HDMI upgrade and software pluses which i believe will be added to old gen cards soon enough.  They are a wash. The big difference of course is the 4GB of VRAM.  I was going to go with a 980 to replace my setup but now I thinking about 970's-SLI for $60-$120 more depending on models.

670 SLI1200mhz  vs 9801400mhz clock (Galaxy's OC'd Cards comparable to 670 FTW i think at least for the test)
He's got both types of cards OC'd. Did my best here to give you them.  Prob gonna have to magnify(CTRL+) and they are very visable.

    talkischeap,

Thanks for letting me know you have a benchmark image.  I am pretty sure I am going to stick with my 970 SLI idea, but I wouldn't be doing my due diligence without looking at the 980 benchmark. I saw that Jacob put up a benchmark showing the 680 sli marginally beating a single 980, so what you are saying makes sense to me.

In terms of benchmarks and gaming, yeah you'll have better performance with the 680s. But think about the increased efficiency in terms of power consumption plus less heat in your room if you go with a single 980.
Just something to think about. I know I am with my setup.

I am okay with heat in my room.  Probably better for these Jersey winters anyway.  I think coming from my 670's, SLI 970 is going to be the way to go.  Definitely a performance increase, especially for my overhaul plans.
