Got this monitor for about 86NZD (yep it was a $3000+ monitor), monitor starts showing this red tint that most people would refer it to the monitor cable damaged or not plugged in properly in both ends. Had factory reset it, no luck. Played with the colour settings, one profile fixed it slightly but the tint still shows up. And it wouldn't be the GPU as its working perfectly. Even when nothing is plugged into the monitor, there is the red tint still. So I might suspect that something is failing inside the unit.

I also have plugged it to different machines from the 2nd PC to the Mac Mini G4, the Windows PC and even my Ouya, just in case if the DVI inputs are faulty on either side of the devices. No difference here. Any LCD experts here who can specify the failing part and if it's repairable?

And, for those of you who are interested in the red tint, here ya go.

The HP:

Compared to a monitor that is in perfect condition:

Again, it was a $3000 monitor, so there should be hope for this thing.

I've seen this on my work monitors (Dell UltraSharp 2408WFPb) - it is the input circuit board on the back of the monitor.  It may be a capacitor issue, or tin whiskers - the fix for that is reflowing the solder joints.  You wont know for certain until you crack the monitor open - an oozing capacitor will let you know if it is a capacitor issue.
You may have to go big and try reflowing the board in an oven, but it isnt a guaranteed fix.  Dont stick the whole monitor in the oven, just the circuit board.

I'll see if that's the issue.

I should also highlight that the last owner hadn't used the monitor for a while since it was given to him. So I thought maybe a long run for the monitor could see itself rectifying the issue itself. The other possible problem would be the failing CCFL tube, although I'm not familiar with the LED back lit technology and it might not apply to LEDs, as oppose to traditional LCD back lit monitors.

    Here's an update.

I finally cracked the monitor open after finding out the front bezel needed to be removed first after spending hours trying to open yesterday. Turns out none of the caps have gone bad yet.

But days earlier, I have contacted HP and they told me to contact their repairs department for any hope of repairing the monitor. The first problem I found is that the number the gave me is an Oz number. However, they do have a business nearby my place.

This is the page that the search for the number came up with. The HP representative gave me the number of the existing return department. So, are there any other ideas or should I just go with them?

Go the HP Support route for now - you can always try something different if you don't like their option later.  All things considered, that is a relatively new monitor (released in 2010) - I'm at a loss as to why it is doing what you describe and I cant find any search results on Google that leads me to believe this is a design flaw or known problem.  :(  Sorry, it seems like bad luck.

    Ah, that's all good.
At least the problem isn't related to the panel itself. It's got to be an issue with one of the circuit boards inside; most likely that inverter board next to the logic board. I'll ask HP in a few days but for now I am observing (using) it to see if it'll repair itself. Had another HP monitor that was sold ages ago that had a problem with the transformer maybe and it repaired itself.

    Just an update on this.

I took it in to a shop to see if they can get it fix. 2 days later, they told me that at first, it's just a faulty main board that needs replacing. However, further digging showed that the panel itself has too many wear and tear on its components, which meant in order to get the monitor back to 100% condition, the board and the panel will need replacing, thus, making it uneconomical to repair.

So the only hope is to see if the monitor will repair itself until it hits a bang (dies), though this can be a rare occurrence.
