Has anyone noticed their 980's coil whine? Just got mine hooked up and I've had coil whine before, but normally only during certain applications where the frame rate is really crazy high. But I can hear the whine just within Windows.

I would, unacceptable. I took mine back to the store. Am going to wait to see what other people encounter.

No coil whine on either of my GTX 980 SCs.  They are whisper quiet, I never realized how loud the GPU fans were, but now my GPU fans aren't even the loudest fans in my case even while gaming!  Extremely pleased with them.   I am kind of surprised though people are experiencing coil whine on these 980s given they are Nvidia reference models.

My coil whine was so bad I had to return my card, looks like EVGA whiffed it this time around.

It's not EVGA's fault. They all use the same (bad) reference board. 500€ and they saved some pennys on good components. :(

Is coil whine considered a valid reason for RMA/Replacement?

Yes. However, some people have posted success in the past just letting the card run for a few hours/day perhaps and it kind of just ''works itself out'' for lack of a better term.

I started the RMA process for my GTX 980 SC card today.  I sit 20ft from my computer and can hear the whine, even with moderate level audio coming from my speakers.  The EVGA support rep I spoke with was very helpful an made the process pretty much painless.  I'm hoping to have a new card by Wednesday.

20 feet away and still hear coil whine even above the sound from your speakers? sorry but that sounds like exaggerated nonsense. lol who the hell sits 20 feet a way from their pc anyway?

People who prefer to game in silence? I dunno, if I could put my PC in a seperate room I would without hesitation. My 7990's coil whine could be heard through my headphone at 60% volume. Think of yourself as lucky to have not experienced it that badly instead of calling someone out

I too hate coil whine but I am still calling BS. please show me this setup where someone is sitting 20 feet away from their pc. and you have near super human hearing to hear coil whine 20 feet away over the sound coming from speakers. some of you just flat out exaggerate the hell out of things.

My PC is downstairs in the basement, about 25-30 feet away, I have a 25 foot HDMI cable and a 25 foot USB 3.0 cable with a hub....only thing that sucks is having to run downstairs to power it on or work on it. Next house we buy were going to build it and I'm going to build in a basement Sever\Gaming room with its own AC and ventilation system. Going to put all the comps in that one room and run cords to all the rooms in the house....gonna be freaking epic!

I can hear her ramp up when she get's going through the floor, I have very sensitive ears and eyes and can hear and see very well, but the sound is so light I just try to ignore it. Coil whine is not only an issue of hearing its also a issue with long term use and QC by EVGA. Its been years and years since my 8800gts and it had really bad coil whine, more things change more things stay the same....lol =)

With that said, I'm really looking forward to my two new 980gtx acx 2.0.....I pray they don't have coil whine or any problems....

Some of these are incredibly loud. I myself have experience with a card that you can hear from another room. Don't be so dismissive just because you've been lucky.

My EVGA GTX 980 SC ACX2.0 is absolutely silent, no coil whine at all, and fans are very quiet as well. The boost clock is way higher than advertised too, It jumps up to 1443MHz in demanding games. Super happy with this gpu.

If I had any coil whine i would RMA it for sure.

I just bought two EVGA GTX 980 ACX and there's a coil whine when I boost the fan speed (I heard it while gaming and after troubleshooting determined that's the cause). Usually kicks in most noticeable around 55% fan speed. I took out each card and test separately and found they both do the same thing - a whining when the fan ramps up. I had this EXACT problem on my EVGA GTX 680 I ended up RMA to get it fixed.

I'm pretty upset right now. Probably going to request an RMA.

Just got my EVGA GTX 980 SC reference today and i get coil while that i can hear just fine when my case is closed and about 3ft away. Capping FPS at 30 gets rid of it but you can hear it at 60-120+ and with a 120hz monitor it sucks.

RMA'd it with newegg will be sending it out after the weekend....gives me some time to do some more testing to see if it goes away. If i get another bad one i think i will try my luck RMA'ing through EVGA next time.

I have owned 10 gtx 980 acx 2.0 sc cards and 4 Asus strix 980s. Every one has had coil whine under 3 different systems. 3 different platinum rated PSUs, 3 top tier mother boards, various CPUs, 2 clean power inverters, and 3 different power sources with all the same results.

I have had a coil whine and suspect the 980 classified. I only hear it when I am gaming and in my headset. I've dealt with it until now but is there any information on this you can help with? Id appreciate it!
