On the back side, squeeze the "arrow tips" on the tips of the pins with a pliers. With the tips compressed, the pin will push straight through. There isn't really any trick. I haven't broken any, but I never tried with a really old board like yours where the pins have been heat soaked for many years. If you break a pin, you can always put a spring and screw in its place.
